Police Chief Writes Letter to Parents of Sons Involved in Townline Hill Conflict

A bluntly worded letter from Abbotsford’s police chief has been distributed to the parents of men involved in the Townline Hill gang conflict, warning that their sons are in “critical danger.”

Abbotsford Police spokesman Const. Ian MacDonald said the letter signed by Chief Bob Rich has been hand-delivered by officers in the last couple of weeks to “17 or 18” homes in Abbotsford.

The Townline Hill conflict – named for the area in which most of the dispute has been taking place – began about two years ago and involves two groups of young men, primarily of South Asian descent, battling over drug turf.

Rich’s letter states that the conflict has resulted in numerous shootings and five murders, including the deaths of 18-year-old Harwin Baringh (in photo below) in October 2014 and Ping Shun Ao, 74, an innocent bystander who was killed in September 2015 by a stray bullet intended for his neighbour.

MacDonald said he would not detail the other three murders referenced in the letter, but they occurred “in and outside” Abbotsford.

He would not confirm whether these include the drive-by shooting that occurred on March 10 of this year at a home on Hawthorne Avenue – resulting in the death of a 22-year-old man – or the fatal shooting on Aug. 17 of Gurdev (Dave) Hair on Crown Court.

“Members of these gangs are trying to kill each other,” Rich states in his letter.

The letter also indicates that the gang members are “fighting over who gets to sell illegal drugs in Abbotsford.”

“The drugs they are selling are killing many other people in Abbotsford because the people that use these drugs are dying from overdoses.”

MacDonald said there’s no doubt that some of these drugs being sold can be linked to the current fentanyl crisis.

He said the substances are either being sold as fentanyl or are sold as other drugs that contain fentanyl, often unbeknownst to the buyer.

Rich’s letter also states that one of the gang leaders was recently arrested, although no name is mentioned.

Very likely that these parents are fully aware of their son's activities - then one must ask, what is the purpose of this letter?  These parents already raised drug dealers/murders - does the police chief think they're going to start 'parenting' all of a sudden because of his letter?

exactly my thought

its already too late imho

but what they can try doing is teaching future parents how to prevent their kids from joining these gangs or such

At least they can't be accused of not being proactive. It has to start somewhere. One of the obstacles they are up against is a wall of silence and non-cooperation from the families and communities. Too bad they can't all be held accountable for crime.

Lets just say... if it was one of my kids going around being a little gangbanger.... some physical negative reinforcement will be implemented.  Plus a one-way ticket out of the country.

Want to end gang violence and activity running along ethnic lines?  Want to break down the wall of silence?  It would take no more than 3 years.  When little Bobby or Billy insert any ethnic name of your choice into the formula is convicted of gang/ drug related charges EVERYBODY in the family EVEN distant relatives go back to the country of origin.  Once one precedent was made.  The information pouring in would be overwhelming.  Didn't say it would be fair but it would work.  For a short while the murder rate would soar among those family units with the most to lose.  Be it drug wealth or good careers and life in Canada.

Drug dealers destroy people's lives, especially the ones that sell meth, h, crack etc.

Eventually drug addicts resort to crime to support their habit.

In poor countries or poor areas the fact that there are no economic opportunities is always used to explain drug markets.

Kind of like inner cities in America, what else is to do but sell drugs?

Even places with ample opportunities like Switzerlad, Sweden, Norway, Holland, Canada etc. you still have people that want to make money by selling dope.

Why bust your ass working when you can make a G in couple of hours.

A bunch of kids who do not come from poverty copying the "coolness" of gang life in the ghettos of America. You south Asians got it so bad here in Canada, with your massive houses and crazy rich parents.

Ya, you guys are really cool. Parents bought your ride, grew up in a 6 bedroom house, had everything given to you, but you wanna be a thug because you really deserve an 8 bedroom house, right?

Oh, and the stats show that you morons are not only huge losers that got coddled by their parents and now rebel to violence, you're terrible shots. Collectively have about a 120 shot per kill ratio. That's really bad. What a burden these idiots are to the health care system.

"Dear parents of the loser rich kids who want to be thugs- please take your spoiled brats to the shooting range before unleashing their stupid entitled asses onto eachother so we don't have to look after them for weeks after they get shot in the shoulder, thanks"

Abby is quickly becoming the new Surrey

What an ignorant comment.

Surrey is the most beautiful city in BC.  I love whiterock and crescent beach.

I wonder if the Canucks will move to Surrey - probably would work well.
