[Proposal] Burrows to Montreal

Provost

Recommended Posts

Honestly I don't care the return, and am not trying to ditch Burrows.

He has always talked about how special it is for him to play in Montreal, last time he even said something like "I would pay to be able to skate on this ice".  You really can't overestimate the reverent connection lots of francophones have with that team.

The guy has been nothing short of wonderful for us for his entire career, and you couldn't ask for a better team guy.  He deserves a chance to win a Cup and even more, would be overjoyed to get to hang a Canadiens jersey with his name on it in his man cave.

Montreal is reportedly looking to stock up and is even interested in Doan for some veteran leadership and grit.  You can't tell me that Burrows isn't a warrior they would want on one of their bottom lines for a long playoff run.  He is a guy that has been there and knows what it takes.

JB has said he won't ask players to waive their NTCs, but it is an easy conversation to have to ask Burrows if he would be interested in that idea without trying to force it.  "Hey Burr, we are more than happy to have to you for the rest of the season, but if you want this chance you deserve it."

If Burr wanted to, we should do everything possible to let him end his career they way he wants.  That would include retaining cap to make it happen, regardless of the return.  It's the least this team could do for a guy that has gave his all to the team and the city.

Also, i'd like to see burrows join the team in some shape after his hockey career, they guy loves the sport.

I wouldn't;t even be adverse to him signing a lower dollar contract for next season with us.  Still a better option than some PTO guy.

He should absolutely also be kept as a player development guy if he is interested.  I think his kids are still relatively young, so he may want to say in town after his playing career.

Retain 50% and get a 2019 7th back Jim, who cares. Burr's earned it.

I wish the Sedin's could cut the cord and want to go somewhere like Tampa or CBJ for one more run, I hate the idea of their careers fizzling out here vs. getting 1 or 2 more shots at a cup.

Montreal is fairly flush with wingers right now. But they just had matching 7 week injuries to Galchenyuk and Desharnais, their two most offensive minded centres. If someone is spitballing a trade with them right now, I would start with a centre.

Burrows would be a good fit on Montreal without even considering the nostalgic association.

Burr and Shaw on a line in the playoffs would throw teams off so much they might just lose the whole match up.

JB said he's not trading the NTCs.

Burrows has earned the right to decide his fate. JB said he wouldn't ask any of his NTC players to wave and Burrows, obviously hasn't asked to be moved.

If he were to ask, and Montreal were his destination, it would be the first time I would ever cheer for anything out of Montreal. I wouldn't buy a Montreal jersey or anything crazy like that (I have my limits) but it would be great to see him hoist a cup and, at the same time, give a collective "kiss my a@#" to all the neh sayers.

That would be great.

By the time a trade for a top 6 centre materialize, they will both be back from injury and MTL will have a surplus of centre.

Shaw can temporarily play center on a 2nd line for a few weeks.

The end of their career is trending in a similar way than Iginla.

They are reportedly trying to acquire Doan, I think he is a winger.

Burrows is also useful as he can line up at center in an emergency if there are injuries in a long playoff run.

Eklund is the only guy saying they're trying to get Doan. Haven't seen a single reputable source saying they have any interest in him.

I think it's a pretty sound idea Provost.

Imo the Habs could certainly use a solid veteran boost at bottom 6 LW.  They have some good young players as options, but most of them are pretty green at the NHL level.

Lehkonen has also had injury issues, Daniel Carr is a decent 4th liner - but I think Burrows could be very good depth for a contender like Montreal, and he'd drive the B's nutz if they wound up facing each other again in the playoffs.

Burr is adept on either wing, so arguably also a two way veteran upgrade option over guys like McCarron or Hudon.  Versatile guy that can play in lots of situations and works with virtually anyone you play him with.

Regardless, you simply can't expect to be entirely healthy through a long season and playoff run.

I think the Canucks take back Desharnais' dead 3.5 of expiring cap and the Wash late 2nd.

Rental prices of guys like Polak and Winnik were even higher - I think Burrows is easily as valuable.

One thing standing in the way imo - Bergevin whining publicly about "tampering" lol.  Not sure I'd bother to talk to the guy after that if I'm Benning.

What ever team he'd get traded to would immediately be the team I am routing for this post season.  Just hoping it wouldn't be the Flames or Bruins.

I'd be ok with Calgary. Not LA Chicago though

At 50% retained, he should get us a solid return

Not sure if they need him but we could milk a pick or two out of him yet. He's been a great mentor for Horvat and Baertschi though and a good leader and as much as I don't like having him around for 4M per year, he brings a lot to the kids. We need that balance of veterans still to help these kids learn and Burrows has really stepped up to become that veteran, whereas others have faltered. I'd hesitantly trade him at the deadline and hope Baertschi and Bo are alright by themselves by then which they should be.

Maybe get a 2nd rounder out of him straight up with some retained cap?
