Disagree...it is the Sedins that are declining.  It is just a fact of life that all adults who live long enough to pass their prime realize.   The Sedins are less mobile, their vision isn't quite as sharp and their hand-eye coordination is a little off.  All the precision required to play their style has dropped a little bit and that makes all the difference.  Players like Jagr can still be effective because his game was built on size, power and skating.  His skating has dropped off a bit but with less minutes, he is still a force.  The Sedins were never able to dominate because of size or speed and relied on pinpoint precision passing. That ship has sailed.

I am the last person to try to deny that the Sedins are declining, IMO they should be second liners now.

But it is the sad state of the rest of the team that they are still first line players, heck, Sven being toted as the team's top line player? really? Maybe like Raymond, one decent year and basically a perimeter player, this team's level of skill is so low and Horvat is learning how to lose with grace?

If the sedins retire dont we still have there bucks on the cap next year?

According to Linden if the Sedins don't retire then the necessary rebuild won't happen, it might hurt their feelings if the team doesn't resign them for another 2 years (Eriksson's contract term).

Not even Arizona?  Put him on a line with Datsyuk and Pronger.

Arizona will have their new down town area and that should solve most of their attendance problems. They weren't so bad until they moved to Glendale even in that old basketball only arena in Phoenix.

Then they won't need loser contracts so much.

FYI - Right now, He is the highest paid player on the team at $8M/yr, and next year to.

"30 goal scorer" Loui Eriksson has 6 goals in 34 games, on pace for 14 this year. He hasn't scored since Nov.8.

He is lackluster cause he knows he has no chance of winning.  If the sedins didn't fall off a cliff this year they would still have a shot.... that's why he signed here.... to replicate Olympic success.     but it's over before it started, we needed him here a few years ago or sooner, it might have worked.  Brilliant idea to get and sign him....  one last shot for the sedins to win with the team...  but time waits for nobody, too bad as it would have been really fun to watch!!!

So don't pretend u wouldn't have risked sucking a bit longer in the down times for another sliver of hope.  Even if we had another run but fell short it would be fun.  That's what we tried, it just didn't work.  Was a long shot, but we aren't winning now anyways so what's the risk?

now that it failed, the length of his contract probably equals the time it takes to rebuild this franchise.  We are 5+ years out people.  Luongos retirement won't mean squat, as we won't be competing so cap space won't matter.  So chill and enjoy the games,  btw we need a new coach who can play the young guys.

peace

Don't fool yourself, he signed for the big bag of money and so far his play seems to indicate as much. Not knocking the guy. I'd have done the same thing. But let's not sugar coat this.

Your definition of "brilliant" and mine appears to differ. Trading Alek Stojanov straight up for Markus Naslund was "brilliant" the signing of Eriksson is "unfortunate"

Bad signing, bad fit, bad results. Nothing going on here I didn't expect except that I thought he would have gotten a serious shot to stick with the Sedins. Awful contract at an awful time. Not moveable in reality. Benning has made some gaffs, but this one is inexcusable.

But don't you think thats the issue though Jack? The guy didn't get 4 games in before Wiliie threw him into the line blender. He hasn't really been given a chance to gel with one of our best centres, Henrik or Bo. Sometimes it takes 10 games!

He's also not getting enough credit as a playmaker. That pass to Granny a couple of games ago was the only reason we got a goal.

Have to insulate Sutter though; that's why we have a veteran like Horvat to shelter Sutter so he can develop into a NHL center.  Eriksson lack of sustained time with the Twin is just collateral damage.

I'm sure it's a factor in his production, but that still doesn't make the signing any more sane. The Canucks are a team that struggles to generate scoring chances regardless of where Erikkson plays. Hansen is far more deserving is $6M/year than Erikkson is from an effectiveness standpoint.

What sucks is that if we are going to be paying 6 million in cap space for a basically $3 million dollar defensive specialist, then management is at more of a disadvantage over the next 5 years having $3 million less to spend on needed offensive upgrades. Even to land a wanted free agent and then flipping him for picks is harder to do.

But I cannot believe that this is all we are going to see from  Eriksson.  He can't suddenly forget how to play hockey, can he? (Don't answer that).

While Benning has made his mistakes (Like this signing) I've been generally pleased with the way this team has been progressing so far in this rebuild. The Canucks were always gonna be awful this year, no matter what changes they made this year.

And the worst GM is Sakic, hate to say it but he's been horrible in Colorado.

Has Sakic made horrible signings or trades...Or is his team underachievers ie coaching issues?

Lol beer almost out the nose when I read this. Seriously though Vegas might take him.  Probably not and it would perhaps cause upset...Not to mention 29 other teams praying that Vegas takes on one of their bad contracts.

With the way LE's deal is for the next 5 year, is it possible to trade him at the Trade Deadline?  I think this could be the worst off-season signing the Canuckc have ever made in their complete time in the NHL. It seems like he has no clue to why he is out on the ice most of the time.  I don't even know if he has a no trade clause that makes moving him more difficult.  He seems to be uninterested out there and on most nights he seems invisible.  I always thought not hearing a d-mans name a lot during a game is a good thing because he probably isn't making any real mistakes. The opposite goes for the forwards.  I hardly ever hear LE.

Messier messed up this franchise pretty good.

Agreed on Hansen.  What is a concern is Hansen  ould get moved because he can be while we hang onto Eriksson.  Also, the bargain Hansen is now could be wasted if JB "reward" him with a big pay day when his current deal expires and he is on the downhill side of his career.  Asset management does not appear to be JBs strongest skill.
