Free Willie from the Road.

Dont know if I put the correct tag on this so apologies just in case.  This may be just another thread about debating the merits of our current head coach and the challenges he has every game day worked with this yo-yo of a roster...And it may be headed into right into the wave of popular opinion that his reign should stopped.

I am not necessarily pro Willie but at least for now I am pro stability. And I don't think he may even be overachieving.  One of the biggest metrics one can use to determine if a coach is doing better than a team on paper should be doing is home games ( last change) or road games ( first and only change).

It's a simple eye test to see how he does at matching lines when he actually can.

So far this season our home record is 11-6-2  second best in our division and road record is second worse in the league at 4-12-1.   Part of this descrepencie will be preparation...But a lot of it will be an inability to get the match ups Willie wants.  It does show that when he can hold more cards he does way more with his line-up and assuredly is part of the reason management publicly is backing him up.

At least for now I honestly don't see a coach change as the best option.  This team likes him despite that he isn't as enduring a guy as Larry Robinson or McLean were.  And he is no Torts.  And he did squeeze one more 100plus point season out of the "stale" core.   More than anything I just want a coach the guys can rally around and grow with....Willie is not as bad a tactician as some suggests...Backed up by his home versus road winning percentage...One of the best in the conference...Who knows if he can squeeze every last drop out of the players on the road this team could even have an outside chance on a wild card spot...Not bad considering we are supposed to be below.COL.  Blast away.

What happened last year?

Home 15-21-5

Away  16-17-8

Only Toronto had a worse home record than us.  Coaching isn't/shouldn't be judged based on a road vs home record.

Of course not...But it something they are doing seems to work better at home

.

Maybe this will change and maybe his NHL career will go up in smoke. But it's hard to argue that so far things look bad at home...And yes coaching plays  role in that.
