Anton Rodin | RW/LW
One of the Canucks' best players tonight. It looks like he's grown quite a bit, but then again that could just be because Schroeder is on his line.
I was disappointed with Rodin, after hearing the hype from CDC I expected a little more from this guy. He plays with one hand on his stick, the other on the parachute (he is more than a little soft). No way was he good tonight in my eyes.

Could be worse though. He could have played like Rai.

rodin's line was the best line of the night, they created the most chances and were the biggest threat. the jensen/archibald line was a very close second, but they also were playing against the second pairing, not the first pairing like sweatt-schroeder-rodin.

rai looked rusty, but that's to be expected (first game after missing a year). I was disappointed with Anthony though, kid's blown coverage and failure to stick with his back-check caused at least 1 goal, he looked lackadaisical for sure, and there's really no excuse for his play. The other disappointment was Honzik's horrid showing; so many bad goals. Karel St. Laurent did great though, I'd be surprised if he doesn't find himself a job somewhere this season (though probably not with us). all of the other unsigned invites did a piss poor job. none of them will get a second look if they continue to play like that.

If you feel Rodin's line was "the best of the night", that is your opinion and you are welcome to it. I thought, for an all "pro" line, they were weak. Sweatt was okay, Schroeder was fair, and Rodin was an ineffectual perimeter player.

No doubt in my mind that 18 year old Jensen and Archibald were better.

On d, Sauve looked pretty solid. Erixon had a good first period, then fell apart completely. None of the others impressed in any positive way. Hannay had a decent showing in his fight.

Honzik played like a nervous 18 year old. He did make some excellent saves, but let in some real clunkers. Kind of like Luongo, Jr.

So was I. I was expecting more tenaciousness out of him. He's supposed to have a nose for the net and use his speed to drive to the net to create secondary chances. It was his first game in NA since the WJC in 2010 so it was expected that he'd need some adjustment time. Also, him and his linemates didn't really connect on many passes, leading to turn overs and many other problems.

In general, the biggest thing yesterday wast that we couldn't connect on passes to generate any kind of pressure.

Hopefully that improves, and Sweatt, Schroeder and Rodin get some cycling going to day and some rushes.

Well there only practice together was Sunday morning, I thought they didn't do that bad at all. I really think Honzik just rattled them. Up until Hamilton's goal I thought the Canucks were doing well and Schroeder, Rodin and Sweatt line were starting to control the play in the offensive zone. For Rodin I think the speed of playing on a smaller Ice surfice will be the biggest challenge, you just don't have the time and space on the outside like you'd be used to, but by the end of the game you were watching him make some really nice tight turns in the corner to avaid the d-men you can see potential there. Really take away Honzik and I think it would have been a lot closer.

Rodin a hit in his second prospects game

PENTICTON — Anton Rodin was drafted for his skill, but he’s not afraid to throw his weight around, what there is of it, as well.

At 5-foot-11 and 176 pounds, his size sometimes works against him in puck battles.

But he twice nailed 6-foot-2, 210-pound Trevor Cheek into the glass on Wednesday night, often was the first Canuck in on the forecheck and wasn't afraid to go to the dirty area in front of the net in the Canucks' 5-3 win over the Sharks at the Young Stars tournament.

"I didn't get the sense in the first game, either, that he was shying away at all," coach Craig MacTavish said. "He's not afraid to be the first guy on the puck.

"That's an encouraging sign for a guy at that size with that skill level, that he's got a willingness to be in there first."

Asked about the hard body checks on someone three inches taller and 35 pounds heavier, Rodin said: "Yeah, well, I have to, I've got to get my body into it."

His skill came to the fore Wednesday, making some nice plays and showing some nice moves in the San Jose zone.

He undressed Sharks defenceman Antoine Corbin then drew goalie J.P. Anderson out of the net before going 5-hole to make it 5-3 Canucks late in the third period.

And his nifty long backhand pass set up Darren Archibald for the Canucks' third goal midway through the second period.

It was a relief after Rodin's only other outing, Sunday's 7-2 loss to the Oilers in which he was almost invisible.

"It was a bit better tonight, but still, I know I have a lot more to give," said Rodin, who turns 21 in November.

He struggled on Sunday in what was his first outing on small ice since an outstanding performance at the 2010 world junior championship at Saskatoon and Regina.

He swore Wednesday morning he'd approach the game against the Sharks differently, quit thinking so much and start playing on instinct.

It worked.

"I wasn't focusing on all the technical stuff, just playing the game," he said.

Rodin, drafted 53rd overall in 2009, was bothered by shoulder problems last season, the pain so bad by the end of the year that it hampered his shooting with Brynas in the Swedish Elite League.

But since he arrived in Vancouver in July he's been getting chiropractic treatment and says he's now pain-free.

On Wednesday Rodin did what he was supposed to do, excel against fellow prospects.

When main training camp begins on Saturday and then the exhibition season, it'll be a whole different matter, playing against men.

A season, at least, in Chicago will do him good, but he could be called up much as Michael Grabner was in the past to fill specific needs.

As for the small ice surface, Rodin says he's being won over.

"Now I'm into it," he said. "I like it a lot.

Does Rodin remind anyone else of Grabner in a way?

I don't think too many players have the speed that Grabner does. But Rodin is pretty fast, and has a great shot like Grabner.

I think Rodin has better moves than Grabner though, and can also battle for pucks better.

Both are great players, but I think Rodin will develop into a better all around player, whereas Grabner wil become more of a pure goal scorer.

Pretty spot on.

Specifically, Rodin (like the article's headline above states) will be a much tougher customer than Grabner and probably due to that a much more valuable forechecker.
