[Signing] Zack Smith returns to Ottawa [4 years x 13 M]

The Ottawa Senators have locked up Zack Smith, signing the forward to a four-year, $13-million contract extension, the club announced Monday.

Smith, who was scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent this summer, will earn $3.25 million in annual salary for the next four seasons. It's a healthy pay bump from the $1.88 million he's earned annually on his current deal - also a four-year pact.

Smith will have some protection with a limited no-trade clause, ESPN's Pierre LeBrun reports.

Coming off his career-best 25-goal season last year, Smith, 28, has hit double-digit totals in goals and assists through 43 games this season, scoring 11 times and racking up 22 points.

A middle-six contributor, Smith has had a reasonably effective impact on total shot attempts throughout his last four seasons in Ottawa, as he's toggled between functions.

In a conference call shortly after the announcement, Smith said the Senators' direction was one of the greater selling points.

"I'm very happy to get this done, and I'm looking forward to the future here in Ottawa," he said.

Not sure how that is bad for today's standards.

6'2 210, provides grit/toughness, still only 28. Good for 35-40 points and 20 goal range.

I'd much rather have Smith at his new contract then Dorsett at his...

Cdc...

Most don't know anything outside Vancouver.

Dors is getting some flack here... When he signed his deal he was having a great year. As soon as Jimbo paid up... He kinda fell off the cliff.

Had he continued to play like he was, it was a good deal considering how much he was fighting too. That being said... His play dropped significantly.

Who knows maybe Zack's will too.  Lots of players start to slack after getting their life changing contracts.

Only time will tell if this is better than DD's deal.

Is it just me, that wonders if Dorsett's play was hampered by his neck problems?

And we thought the Sbisa contract was bad

1. Why are you comparing a defenseman to a forward?

2. You shot too quickly and look foolish, you thought he is a Dorsett, when he is a 40 pts player/20 goal scorer. You know who is a good comparison? Our Sutter.
