The positives on Loui Eriksson

So to be sure, being on pace for 33 points for a 6 mil contract is disappointing, but I'm seeing a lot of really ugly stuff being written about this player and thought a little perspective is needed on the guys actual season performance, because there are a lot of things to like.

It also gives me a lot of hope that under a more offensively minded coach we still have a potentially very good player here.

Yes the production is going to be about 20 pts lower than hoped, but frankly when you are put on Willie's line blender for more than 1/2 your shifts it kills the offence of a lot of players. Loui is far from alone this year in low production thanks to Willie's defence-1st style.

Here's whats gone right with Loui this season:

1. Effect on team shot attempts

“No regular has had a more positive impact on generating shot attempts. In fact, the Canucks are averaging seven more shot attempts every 60 minutes that Eriksson plays than when he doesn’t. He leads the team by a wide margin.” (http://theprovince.com/sports/hockey/nhl/vancouver-canucks/jason-botchford-baertschi-suffers-concussion-eriksson-hurting-on-score-sheet)

2. Leads the team in Corsi For  Amongst the Regular Players

3. Leads the team in takeaways

4. Kills penalties

Loui is a solid guy on the PK and due to this has about 10% fewer o-zone starts than the Sedin's.

5. Most productive partner with the Sedins

If you look at the actual production and line combo %'s, Loui has been their best partner and should have simply could been left with them all season.

This is Daniels production this year (http://dobberhockey.com/players/daniel-sedin)

Eriksson is very effective from the high slot, to the crease.

He is extremely ineffective on the boards, and behind the goal line.

He needs a center and winger that can not only pop the puck loose while disabling the opponent on the boards, they need to also be able to get him the puck.

According to these stats he's playing well enough, I guess.  Why does he look so horrible watching him?  Are our expectations just too high, considering his contract?

His hair passes the eye test:)

Because he's never been a flashy or "gritty" player. Anyone expecting that never watched him.

If he's so effective with the Sedins why doesn't willie play them together? Its not like he's producing heavily on another line. Which is confusing because he's stubborn with every other line except this one.

He has been lately and in and out over the year. I'm not making up the production figures, its all right there. Now, are they great numbers? No but I think you can attribute the decline of the entire team to Willie as much as anything. The only player really jumping off the page this season is Bo.

Thats why I've been wondering how things could look next season if he's paired with Bo. If Willie was willing to break up the Sedin's, a line of Daniel-Bo-Loui could be something fun to watch.

When I saw the thread title my first thought was: I hope he brought his flak jacket. lol

Although his goal production has been disappointing, I haven't thought he's played badly at all. I think most relate his production to his actual play. If he's not producing he must be playing badly. That's not true at all in my mind.

Its fine, its virtual poop they're throwing.

When you look at the total picture and how this team is currently coached (D first, you can look up Willie saying that himself), the line mistakes, etc. it all makes sense.

It was the same with Sbisa, and still is for a lot of CDC despite the actual numbers.

I thought it was odd how he mentioned all those amazing fancy-stats Loui had, but didn't link to any of them.  So, I looked them up - and it turns out that they aren't anywhere near as good as the author makes out.

I think you may want to go back to my OP and you know, click on the links......

The guy has had succes every where he's gone except here, the entire team struggles to score they play a horrible defensive game and a dump dump dump offensive game.

Next season when the Nucks have a new coach hopefully one that plays an up beat offensive style and plays skill over fringe 4th liners we will be able to see what we have in ericson. yeah he was expensive but he like the 6 other nhlers in this  forward group are being used in a way that clearly doesn't work or have any level of success.

It was a bad signing due to the steady downward direction of this club not because of the player. They hoped he could coverup  the total lack of skill on this team aside from 3 others and it's just to much to ask, Especially with this coach.

Lipstick on a pig.

It's worth pointing out - that our team is absolutely terrible.  Our games tend to go as follows:  Opponent scores early, we chase the entire game and lose.  This sets up a situation where our opponent isn't really going all-out for most of our games.  They are only trying for the first few minutes, then they are sitting back for the rest of the game.  They have the lead, so they focus on defense and allow us to play offense a lot more than we'd get to if we were tied or winning.  So, our shot-attempt stats will be massively skewed in our favor.

So, you can pretty much toss shot-attempts, Corsi and Fenwick into the trash when it comes to our team.  If you use those stats, our team will appear considerably better than they really are.

LE does a lot defensively - just wish he could pot a few of his chances - but when you consider how he is shuffled around on different lines I  understand  it takes time to develop chemistry.  Wish they would leave him with Sutter and Granny but I see Granny is on the Sedin line now - hmmm

Well, they can't really not count either now can they? Even with things being how you describe, and some of the line combo's WIllie's put him on, I'm impressed he has done as much as he has tbh.

My point in doing this is for 2 reasons, 1. to show there is a decent player there, and 2. the kinds of things being written needed a rebuttal.

Loui can almost always be found in the upper/mid slot.  He is a really good two way player.  He is being paid to show the rest of the guys on this team how to play a two way game, as much as he is being paid to put up points.  I will consider his contract a failure, if he starts to put up big minus numbers while on a steady consistent line for a whole year.  With the shaky twitching line blender behind the bench, who knows if he will ever find chemistry on this team.

That really exemplifies Willie D imo. Driving in this morning I heard his interview, when he actually said he based this decision on 1 single shift he saw 5 games ago.

If thats Willie's planning process for what is probably the make or break game of the season... no kidding the lines have been a mess this year.
