Markstrom gets the start in Miller’s old stomping grounds

Surely Ryan Miller is gutted.

Iain MacIntyre asked Canucks coach Willie Desjardins after Saturday’s 4-3 loss to the Bruins if he’d give Ryan Miller a second start in two days; the coach was pretty direct, replying “probably not.”

The stats agree with him. Goalies playing two games in two straight days see a 20 point drop in their save percentage.

But the heart still wonders if Miller should’ve been given a shot to play in the town where he made his mark.

Plus, his only previous start in Buffalo against his old team was last season’s 3-2 heartbeaker, where Rasmus Ristolainen scored with 16.8 seconds left in the third to snatch a win for the Sabres. Miller was hurt in 2014-15 when the Canucks visited Buffalo and the Blues didn’t play there after he was traded by the Sabres late in the 2013-14 season.

Markstrom continues to have plenty to prove

Could the opposite have been done — starting Markstrom in Boston on Saturday so Miller could play in Buffalo? Sure, but then again the Canucks aren’t exactly heaping confidence in the 27 year old.

Markstrom has been very good, but for a team which struggles to score goals, only standing on his head would probably have made a difference. He has just two wins in his last six starts: Jan. 25 against the hapless Avalanche in Denver, and a 42-save performance on New Year’s Eve in Edmonton.

In that span, only the snoozer against New Jersey has seen him face fewer than 30 shots. Miller is slightly ahead of Markstrom in save percentage on the season, but it’s also worth noting Miller has given up 4 goals or more in four of last ten starts.

The Canucks have a pair of decent goalies, but have been reluctant to play Markstrom. Miller was white-hot after Christmas and carried the Canucks into the playoff picture.

But with the team on the precipice of falling out of the playoff race — they’re now six points back of both the Kings and Predators, who hold the two wild card spots — and with Miller having fallen back to earth somewhat, surely it’s time for the Canucks to give Markstrom a bigger share of the load. He’s got a future to play for, after all.

Sabres best Buds

Buffalo beat the Leafs at the ACC on Saturday night.

They lost to the Ducks on Thursday. They beat the Sharks in OT on Tuesday. They lost to the Devils 2-1 on Monday. They beat the Senators 4-0 last weekend.

You get the point. This isn’t a rested team. This is an up-and-down team who are on the edge of the playoff race.

Sound familiar?

What about that Kane guy

You’ve heard about him plenty.

On the ice, he’s scored 18 goals in his last 33 games — he was goalless in the first 11 games on the season — skating mostly with Zemgus Girgensons and Brian Gionta.

He’s back to being the watch-out guy for the Sabres. He’s scored 17 times at even strength this year.

A peaceful rest

One good thing about the Canucks playing midday in Boston in the modern era is Buffalo is just a one-hour flight away via charter. In the olden days, when teams flew commercial…well it would be an ugly trip.

Anyway, the team will have had a solid night’s sleep last night, an important thing when you have to turn around inside a day.

Would like to see Willie give Eriksson a 4-5 game look w/Bo. (and prob Hansen)

They will be 2 of our top 6 for the next 4-5 years...why not see if they have the makings of a new 1st line.

Also...always liked Burr w/Sutter as a tuff shutdown line to play against other teams #1.

Sedin      Sedin     Granlund

Loui          Bo         Hansen

              Sutter      Burrows

Plug in the plugs....

I wouldn't want that at all. Bo is making Hansen and Burrows look like studs right now.

Stay the course till the trade deadline, Maximize value.

Thought the boys played a pretty good game against Boston yesterday - sure there was some mistakes but  we have a pretty inexperienced D so we should expect that.  Hope they bring the same intensity to Buffalo

Go Canucks Go

Horvat/Granny and Hanson with the goals
