(Proposal) Getting our number 1 centre

After reading an article Adrian Dater posted on his twitter (which is the link above) I kinda agreed with him on maybe the best option for colorado to get the most return would be to trade Mackinnon. So this is what I propose we do in the next couple months:

Trade Burrows to anyone for a 3rd rounder

Trade Sbsia anywhere for a 3rd rounder

To Van- Derrick Pouliot

To Pit- Hansen

I heard ferraro talking on the radio about how pouliot was a guy the canucks should be asking for in a trade with pittsbourgh. I believe he just needs a change of scenery.

We then wait till the season is over and see where we land in the lottery as well as wait till after the expansion draft is over then we make this trade:

To Van- Mackinnon

To Col- Tanev, Juolevi, garteig and 1st round 2017 (assuming we aren't in the top 2 spots)

We provide Colorado with a current number 2 defensemen, a potential number 1/2 defensemen, a good prospect goalie (i heard somewhere that col is also interested in a goalie) and a high first round draft pick

Next season our top 9 forwards and defence pairings will look like

Granlund Mackinon __________

Baertschi Horvat __________

Sedin Sedin Sutter

Edler Stetcher

Hutton Gudbranson

Pouliot Tryamkin

Between Errikson, virtanen and boesser they can fill out those two right wing spots.

There is a lot of unknown and risk with that blueline as Gudbranson was terrible this year, hutton hasn't played great, stetcher and tryamkin will be just sophomores and Pouliot hasnt been able to hold down a regular nhl spot yet but I see potential with puck movers and physical dmen in that group.

We'd also be taking a risk That pouliot could be picked up in expansion and trading hansen would be for essentially nothing so a side deal may have to be made with vegas.

Then in the draft we use our second, columbus's second and maybe all our thirds and use them on dmen and hope that we hit a homerun with one of them to start building back up our depth at D.

We would definitely have to re-sign miller for another year or 2 as there would be a lot of uncertainty with our d core and we would need him to bail them out.

Then in the 2018/2019 season our top 9 could potentially look like this

Kane (FA) Mackinnon Boesser

Baertschi Horvat Virtanen

Granlund Sutter Errikson

Colorado already has Johnson and Barrie as RHD and it would cost more imo to get Mackinnon

True, Depending on how you deploy the two of them , johnson would do all pp and and take the offensive zone starts which would leave tanev for pk and d zone starts. Since I wouldnt consider either of them true number 1 defensemen they could help balance the workload out between the 2. And I just personally think barrie sucks and is a third pairing specialist

COL WONT move Mackinnon.

Probably not but just after reading the article I thought it was an interesting idea. Because no one is gonna pay the asking price theyve set for landeskog and duchene. They will have their choice of Hishcier/Patrick, they will probably use our pick on liljegren. Their top 4 in the future would include tanev, juelovi, johnson and liljegren which I think has the potential to be a solid top 4. On forward they would still have landeskog, duchene, jost, rantanen and either patrick or hischier so still lots of skill

Pouliot is really wasting away in Pittsburgh, good point, and with Schultz, Maata and Letang still prime young D-men he's not going to get a sniff. That might change with Maata's injury however but at say draft day we may be able to have a crack at him. If they fill his role with an external trade however we may be able too grab him.

Would consider an Edler + Hansen for Pouliot + 2nd or 3rd trade however.

yea i did some research and it seems that at least for callup duty he's been passed by 1 or 2 of their other ahl defensemen

Then now's probably the best time to go for him. Buy low and grow him up, he may easily have a Schultz-like career. He's got the skill-set to be a very effective top-4 D-man and was once considered the best future defenceman in the world.

If Hansen alone can get him, fantastic, otherwise I'd consider an Edler for Pouliot + pick deal.

I know MacKinnon would cost a lot to even have the Avs consider dealing him, but I don't think that we should trade that much youth/value. I know that's what it'd cost, but we lose this deal if Juo, Garteig or the first pan out.

Edler and Hansen by themselves can get more than that...

I agree with you.  We are giving up a lot of youth.  If Juolevi pans out as a true #1 D man then we lose this trade and we will still be searching for that elusive #1 D man.

You're missing one really big issue:  Mackinon is NOT A NUMBER ONE CENTRE.  He is not an effective centre at the NHL level at all.  Bo is a much better centre than Mackinon.

i feel he hasn't produced as he was projected because he hasn't had a defensive centremen to back him up. His best year was his first year when he had ROR. If he played here he could take most the o zone starts and sutter and horvat would focus more on the d zone starts
