[Trade] Canucks trade Alex Burrows to Senators for Jonathan Dahlen

Recommended Posts

Better return for Burrows than I thought Benning could get.  Who would have thought a 2nd from a very good year.  As long as Dahlen fits Bennings criteria, and he said that he was on his radar last year, I like it.  He has the shot, the IQ, is shifty and not afraid of the dirty areas and has a good attitude.  If his skating isn't up to NHL standards, send him to Horvat's skating coach.

I think the return on Miller would be middling based on the Bishop trade so I expect him to be re-signed.  Hopefully year by year and at a better cap hit.

Hansen, I would rather keep.  Sure they may be able to land picks or prospects for him but who is going to take his place in the top 6?  Not Megna!  Seriously, if he is moved, then they replace him 1 for 1 with a free agent at a much higher cap hit and whatever benefit cap wise they can garner from moving Burrows and re-signing Miller will get used up.  They have Horvat, Gudbranson and Tryamkin to sign this year.

So, I would love more picks but moving him creates problems elsewhere.

I really like this trade, people complain that Dahlen isnt big enough, jeez people c'mon, if he was 6'4 some folks would complain he isnt fast enough or some crap like that. If the kid had the total package of size, speed and skill I guarantee he wouldnt have been available.

Goal scoring is this teams biggest need, not size and Dahlen seems like a goal scorer who can help address that issue. Size is good to compliment goal scoring talents, but if you cant score you will have trouble winning no matter how big or small you are. Dahlen seems like a shoot first player with good speed and puck handling, and he isnt  St.Louis small or Schreoder small, Dahlen is 5'11 175 at 19 yrs old, he could still grow an inch or two and has room to put more muscle on his frame as he adjusts to North American hockey.

In all I like this trade, its a way better than the whole lotta nothing we got for Hamuis and Vrbata.

Dahlen has the talent to be a top 6 player with a good shot and shoot first mentality that could see him become a consistent 20 - 30 goal scorer if developed properly.

I dont want to see this kid buried in the minors until he is 24 because he isnt "defensive enough" or some crap like that. Dahlen definitely needs some work but I hope we let the kid take chances and develop offensively instead of trying to turn him into a 2way forward like we try to do with every young player we get.

Sad to see Burrows go but the time was now to move on and personally I think the canucks got a lot more for a 35yr old 2way depth forward than we probably deserved. Too soon to really say if we got a good deal but Dahlen definitely has the potential to make this one of the better trades we have made in while.

He's a 200ft player, defensively responsible

I criticize the moves that I think deserve to be criticized and praise the ones that deserve praising, like this one.

If that makes me "doom and gloom" so be it.

Fair enough. I guess it would just be nice If a "hall of famer" poster such as yourself didn't rake so much muck regarding or prospects WD JB and the team in general. It tends to fuel a trollathelon among the weaker minds and fly by night fans. Your fully entitled to your opinion as I am mine I guess I just wish it were more positive since you at one time were one of the bigger Homers on the CDC if I say so myself. In a time when far worse moves were being made that handcuffed our team for years.

But I guess that is my opinion.

Yeah i had heard he plays with some heart and grit, he is not a soft swede who is afraid of going to the boards or the dirty areas.

Though playing defense in sweden is a whole different beast than playing defense against Connor McDavid and the upper echelon of NHL talent.

Still, I like the kid, but as I said I just hope we give him fair chances instead of burying him the Minors in favor of guys like Chaput and Megna.

I'm excited for Utica next season, as they will be getting a good crop of young guys who will the chance to grow togetger and, hopefully, carry that chemistry to the big club in 2-3 seasons.  I hope people understand that that's probably how long we'll be waiting for the rebuild to pay dividends.

For all the frustration towards Benning the last year, anybody on here has to be thrilled with this trade. This is also a credit to Burrows' play this season, as he was able to drive his value up higher than anybody could have expected. Most people would have not lost any sleep had he been bought out last off season. "At least this opens up a spot for our kids" we would have said.

Did anybody else notice that the return in the trade wasn't announced until page 14?

Wouldn't have needed to buy him out, he was a pending UFA.

I dunno why people are talking about his skating being an issue... he looks fine to me:

You can tell this kid loves scoring goals, he's got some fire in his belly.  I could see him and Horvat playing well together.
