[Proposal] VAN-TOR

Recommended Posts

I've been looking at where some teams were in the regular season. And I've come up with a trade that may or may not look too bad on both sides.

VAN: 1st round pick (2017) + Tanev

TOR: 2nd round pick (2018) + Marner

Here's my logic...

VAN is looking for a 1st-2nd line centreman, preferably a playmaker or sniper, that can not only increase our centre depth, but can score goals and take some of the scoring load off of the Horvat line. This year's draft, although we'd be picking in the top 5, does not appear to have the elite talent of previous drafts. That being said, Marner appears to have been a great pick-up by TOR. His point totals, while playing at wing for a significant amount of games, along with his skating, speed and offensive awareness, would seem to make him a good fit as Hank's playmaking heir. With that in mind, their defence, specifically their PK, has been lacking (17th overall). They could be looking to drop one of their defensemen (e.g. Polak, Hunwick) in the next year or two for one that can play well in their own end, both at even strength and during a PK. Tanev, in this less-than-great season, has been VAN's top guy in terms of play PK, and is also 3rd amongst defensemen in GA/game when on the PK (the top 2 being Edler and Gudbranson). He is also relatively young, but can be considered a veteran on TOR's blue line.

Also, as it relates to picks, while we might not be getting 1st round pick in this scenario, we get elite talent in Marner, and a pick for the 2018 draft, which appears to quite deep. And looking at VAN's roster presently, although I want to be optimistic, it does not seem we have the team to make it to the playoffs in 2018. With that in mind, a top 10 pick may be in order for that draft year. TOR, on the other hand, will get another young centre prospect that can take on a 2nd line role when Bozak's game begins to falter significantly, and they have a top 4 D-man who knows how to play in the defensive end in its fullest.

This looks even; the trade appears to bring each other an accelerated step closer to the Cup, or to another playoff contendership if you're VAN this far. What do you guys think?

P.S. This is my first post. A little nerve-wracking, but seeing the community here, I'm happy to be a part of it. :)

He's been about a point a game center over there. They're not going to tinker with that lineup and just lose that much offence in one whiff. Nylander on the wing, Kadri at 3C, Matthews at 1C leaves Marner as one of the league's best 2nd line centers.

We'd have to give up a bit more I think, they don't want someone like Vilardi who's going to take 2-3 years to even get to the NHL, they'll want someone young who will hit their prime in 2-3 years along with the rest of their young core. Maybe Tanev + Baertschi/Granlund/Goldobin/Dahlen would do it.

It would be nothing short of a steal if J.B. could pull this off, which is why it's extremely unlikely to happen.

Along with Matthews, Nylander, Rielly and Andersen, Marner's one of the young guns that the Leafs want to build around for years to come, and it's HIGHLY unfathomable that a former #5 pick would be available, even if it's for an elite defensive defenseman.  As good as Tanev is and as much as he can solidify their back end with Rielly, Gardiner and Zaitsev, it would still take a significant plus from our end (maybe a lesser young forward, at least a Goldobin and pick, or maybe a Baertschi?) to get the Leafs to even consider this deal.

If any young player is gonna be dealt outta Toronto for a dman it's kapanen or rychel

no im not just saying kapanen is a good fit because of his 2 goals in game 2

hes a pesky guy out there, kinda like hansen or Higgins but with more of a scoring touch

To tor: tanev, 2nd pick 2017 (CBJ)

to van: kapenen, 1st pick 2017

tanev reunites with Reilly and Canucks continue to get younger

Marner is a stud but who is to say we don't get a better player then Marner with our top 5 pick.

(without our top draft picks) Trading Tanev in a deal to improve the teams offensive problems is a good idea but Drafting our own talent is the way to go.

You can't get anyone in this draft better than Marner, even at #1. He looks like the next Patrick Kane and Marner is arguably the greatest London Knight of all time. He's a stud.

And OP, no offense but there is no package the Canucks could offer that would get Toronto to trade Marner. You don't trade players with that sort of potential

Your logic is flawed, you never know how a prospect will turn out .

look at where Jamie Benn was drafted for example (5th round 129th overall).

To say that no one in this draft will be better than Marner is only somthing a Leafs fan would say .

It would take something incredible. I feel like Marner is being extremely underrated here..... He just had one of the best 19 year old seasons in NHL history. Anyways this thread doesn't make sense, leafs wouldn't trade marner and we should develop our own young stars
