Hopes for 2017-18

Perhaps my favourite thing is that our hopes and dreams have swung to a hopelessly low expectation - now we can start exceeding expectations as we slowly, properly rebuild

I think this last year lowered expectations a tad low.

The D is young and on the upswing, players like Horvat, Granlund, Baertschi and others are all projecting upwards. As long as the Sedins don't decline even further and we are even only half as Injured as this year I don't see a bottom 3 finish. Probably somewhere around 4-10.

Now if that's a good or bad thing is yet to be seen. I would love a #1 or #2 pick next year but if this year proved anything it's that Toronto bought off the NHL for Matthews  ( J/K, now where is my tin foil hat )

Personally I'd like to see:

  • Stecher & Hutton get 30+ points
  • Goldobin, Boeser and Juolevi make the team for the whole season
  • Virtanen to show some improvement
  • Markstrom play 50+ games

I'd agree for the most part but wouldn't put a hard cap on production with guys like Stecher.

I'd add Virtanen and Gaunce to your list of Goldobin, Boeser and Juolevi making the team (and move Edler if possible to make space for Juolevi).  I don't think Boucher is going to make the cut - will get pushed out by a better bottom six fit like Molino.  If they were to lose Sbisa in ED and move Edler, sign a guy like Kulikov (people like Alzner - not sure if realistic).

I'd also like to see Horvat and Granlund sustain what they did this year, perhaps uptick a bit - and Baertschi take another step.

Gudbranson remain healthy and provide that much needed difficult to play against, backbone presence.

The highlighted part is important imo - the one thing I don't want to see repeated is MIller coming back and eating far too much crease.

wow how times have changed. from superstars to nobody wants them. hockey world can be brutal.

The whole world of sports can be brutal. Sentimentality for has-beens doesn't win championships.

I must be weird, because I'm enjoying what's happening with the Canucks these days. For years, it seems anyway, I've been watching the Sedins and Edler slowly decline. The old core surrounded by patchwork players (plugs), coached by the highly volatile Torts or the disillusioned and stubborn Desjardins. The Canucks didn't have much in the prospect pool either, and that was troublesome.

But now they're starting to assemble some nice talent (Boeser, Virtanen, Gaudette, Dahlen, Goldobin, Juolevi...). Excited to add another big piece at the draft. And to see Green take over the team will be interesting too, I think he'll be great for the young guys.

Another year like this season and I'm guessing he'd consider waiving.

As per op's question,  would be great to see:

-BoHo take yet another step in his overall game.

-Bearcheese and Granny both reach 20g's

-Virt come into camp in tremendous conditioning and be a contributing line-up regular

-overall see the d stay healthy and the kids back there continue to develop

-see both OJ and Demko get some NHL game action

That's hard to say. Personally I think the Canucks in the state they're in right now would be tailor-made for a guy like Eriksson. After all you dont get paid any extra for being in the playoffs and the Canucks dont appear to be getting into that mix any time soon.

I must be an optimist.  Willie D took the team from 28th in the league, to last year having us on track to finish 24th.  Of course this didn't occur due to the Burrows and Hansen trades, and the play the kids mantra.  Still I believe we could have finished 24th.  So next year I hoped that with a few upgrades we could have topped out at 20th in the league, or similar. You can always dream.

Loving the positivity but I have a feeling the season is gonna be like...full-of-positive-energy-and-its-gone_o_814242.jpg.4ac845599f8464e1c9c338fa2e9b6cad.jpg

Yes, you may be right lol. I'm feeling optimistic because I know we're going to draft a good player at the draft and I like that Green is the new coach. We might also get to see Virtanen, Juolevi and our 5th overall play with the team next year. But once the season starts and the losses and injuries start accumulating, it may not be as easy to take. Still, these are baby steps to building a contender again and that's how I'm trying to look at it. Look at CHI. They got swept in round one, and their stars with the albatross contracts  are getting a bit older now too. By the time the Canucks are a playoff team again, CHI will be missing the playoffs and drafting high. The circle of life in hockey.

I am hoping for a compete level form this years team similar to how Green had Utica playing. They where in most games ( spare the odd blow out ) despite the fact they had very little in the way of offensive weapons and a modge podge of D Men.

If the Canucks are in most games until the very end it will at least make them entertaining.

Virtanen bust a move

Boeser show why JB is master

Trade for Landeskog.  Tanev + Granlund + CBJ 2nd

Baertschi - Bo - Boeser
Sedin - Sedin - Goldobin
Landeskog - Dahlen - Eriksson
Gaunce - Sutter - Dorsett

Rodin/Boucher/Megna/Labate/UFA Signing

Edler - Stecher
Hutton - Gudbranson
Juolevi - Biega
McEneny/Pedan/Subban/UFA Signing

If we trade Tanev we no longer have someone on that right side, our defense becomes weak again, especially if Sbisa gets taken by LV. On the other hand, that Dahlen line looks pretty sweet. Could reignite both Eriksson and Landeskog to 60 point players and gives Dahlen an elite mentor in Landeskog, all of them Swedish. But I don't see the Avs taking that trade. (Generally feel Sutter is slowing down Eriksson, or that they just shouldn't be on the same line)

- I for one am hoping for the young players to progress positively,
- for our special teams to become relevant, aim for top 20 in both PK and PP,

- to sign one big body in UFA, someone who can take over Dorsett's role should he go down to injury again. Someone in Biega's mold but perhaps with more size and ideally perhaps a center. If that's truly unlikely then at least give Rodin or Labate a go.

- for us to finally solve our depth issues, meaning that we stock Utica with enough players and prospects that we can lose a couple of players to injuries and not have to worry too much for the big team or Utica. Even if this means asking Goldobin to dominate one more season in the AHL.

- for us to finally break this issue with Russian players. Maybe throw some money at Shipachev, Kovalchuk or Dadonov. Maybe draft some more Russians, this might get us Tryamkin back in his prime.

- and hopefully to head into the 2018 draft with more than 7 picks.

How about 20 goals for Loui Eriksson.  Like it or not, we're stuck with him.

The direction has changed from when he signed.  What's his mindset.  Does he want to stay on a team without possibly the Sedins in a year.  There isn't this emotional attachment to Vancouver - he signed as a UFA and as far as I know does not have a history with the region.

I would not be surprised if they mutually agree to move on - his good years are now.

if Juolevi can remain steady and help pot a couple and Dahlen makes an impact at the nhl level I'm predicting we will be battling for a playoff spot into feb-Mar

aside from that

Boeser to pot 25+

Virtanen to eventually earn a call up (maybe be the go to call up)

Horvat to continue and not pleateau due to harder comp

Demko continues to build on another strong season

if our 5th pick from this year is in the ahl - I hope utica pushes for playoffs again

if Suban can get a shot at the nhl

a tanev or edler  is traded this offseason

greener lights a fire under edler if he remains here

hoping we win a lotto selection next season

etc

etc

etc

Lot of ifs.
