Looks like Marky will get his chance next year. Glad to hear this.....

The Province:

Jacob Markstrom will be the Vancouver Canucks’ number one goaltender next season.

In a conversation with TSN’s Pierre LeBrun at the 2017 NHL Scouting Combine in Buffalo, Canucks’ GM Jim Benning was asked about his club’s goaltending situation. According to several reports, the Canucks have interest in re-signing 36-year-old Ryan Miller, a move that many have questioned. Why would a rebuilding team pay for a pricy, aging veteran when they have cheaper, younger options? Why not let Miller go to unrestricted free agency on July 1 and give the reins to the 27-year-old Jacob Markstrom?

As it turns out, we had it all wrong: the Canucks do intend to give the reins to Markstrom. They’re considering Miller as a second-stringer.

“We’re in conversations with (Miller’s) agent and with him,” Benning said, before adding, “Jacob Markstrom’s gonna be our number one goalie going forward.”

“We feel with where we’re at, we need good goaltending every night to be competitive with these young players up front, so we’re gonna talk to Ryan and his agent and if we can figure something out we’d love to have him back.”

This changes the conversation somewhat. Re-signing Miller as a start didn’t seem sensible, especially with Markstrom set to begin a three-year deal that will pay him $3.67 million per season. As a starter, Miller would likely be entitled to that or more. In the cap era, it simply seemed wasteful.

But if Miller is willing to return in a backup role, then perhaps he’d be willing to take less. After all, the Canucks were likely to sign a veteran backup, anyhow, as a stopgap until top prospect Thatcher Demko is ready. Provided Markstrom is still getting the bulk of the starts and development time, who would mind if Miller was the option behind him?

The veteran netminder would be great to have around as Markstrom eases into the role, his first real crack at a starter’s responsibility. But the wise, experienced Miller would also be a great asset for the Canucks’ young skaters, not to mention Demko waiting in the wings.

This is all provided he doesn’t re-sign, then steal the job from Markstrom out of training camp. Canucks fans would hate that.

apparently not - the story has been updated to say "eventually" not necessarily next year.

Just talked to Jim Benning to clarify his Markstrom quote about "being the starter moving forward." He meant eventually, not now. #Canucks

Hmmm. Lol. Management is so all over the place. What does he mean " eventually". Markstrom is 2 and a half years away from 30 for God sakes.

I think it means Jim often doesn't take the time to measure his words. When he first got here it was kind of refreshing because it gives him a sense of honesty (which i think is true) but now its just getting annoying.

Btw Markstrom turns 28 this season. Just fyi.  Pretty old for a goalie of the future if you ask me.

Ya that's what I am saying. Its ridiculous.

and Murray just turned 23 years old and going for his 2nd SC ring. However, Markstrom isn't ready at 28 years old...if this is the case, then he will never be ready?

Have them each split roughly 40+/- games this year, Marky can play closer to 50 next year then the year after Demko can back him up for a couple years until he (likely) steals the starter role. I have no problem with that plan.

That said, I'd also have no problem picking up assets for taking Lehtonen off DAL's hands either.

Also, if Markstom is the #1 goalie eventually, what the hell does that make Demko???

Management really doesnt seem to know what direction they are going. All over the place.

Miller will probably look at California and area options before circling back to us. If no-one else wants him, then he should sign for less dollars. Even so, they should give the net to whoever is playing better. Time will take care of the rest.

Actually they know the media will report anything, so they just say anything, and they buy it hook, line, and sinker.

Honestly, Marky needs to begin transitioning now if he's ever going to be a starter. If he doesn't start playing more games (barring injury of course) next year, it's going to start getting to be too late.

Seems a pretty straightforward plan to me:

That's likely 4+ years before Demko becomes our official starter.
