12,000,000?!..Beauty, eh?

It's a rough projection of our cap space next summer. Yeah, we need to sign guys like Bo & Gud. There'll be others, as well. We got Millsy's 6 to partly cover them guys, assuming we go cheaper in net.

But the twins & Sbisa's contracts come off the books. So space will likely be between 10~14 mill for some period of time. We could even dump Edler's 5, if going into his last season he'd finally accept Plan B. Of course in most deals, some $ comes back our way.

For the sake of economizing argument, there are a few points I hope we can all mostly agree upon:

- By dealing vets(especially on the blueline), we'd be destined to drop lower, therefore draft higher in 2019 & perhaps 2020.

- Having ample cap space gives your GM more bargaining-leverage in virtually all future trade-talk. It's the counterpart GM that's usually more desperate to consummate a deal. Thus, a position of strength.

- Didn't really like JB's earlier signings(eg: Dorsett, Sbisa, Sutter). Hopefully he's learned & improves as the ELC's 'age-up'.

- We only re-sign the twins if it's a very low number. Otherwise, they can contribute to the org in off-ice capacities.

OPTIONS:

1. Sign 2 top FA's. Like when Minny did with Suter/Parise. Shuffle in to lead our burgeoning youth.

2. sign a few, 3~4 millish vets, with blend of grit, skill & savvy. Deal some at deadlines to keep filling youth-pipeline.

3. Focus on signing exp'd D(ala Wash, with Niskanen & Orpik, couple yrs back).

4. Focus on fwd-vet signings.

5. Take on other teams 'contract-dogs'. A Callahan or two, to enhance youth/picks that should be included.

6. Maintain open cap space. Try to enter next 2 or 3 seasons, with 5~7 mill open space, for roster-flexibility.

7. Eat a chunk of a large cap hit. Example, eat 2 mill of Edler's hit(only 1 yr left), ensuring a superior return.

...8. Any other idea, I may have forgotten/ommitted?

Or, any combination of the above listed?

Have at'er folks..let's spend/save it like it's OURS!

You mean like Loui E ?    No thanks.   Its all about draft and development for me.    Old washed up FA's  just don't seem to be the way to go with a rebuilding club.....

I have no set idea on this. Not strongly advocating one strategy. Tried to list as many as I could dream up. Do you wanna retain 2 mill of Louie(for 4 yrs)? & try to swap for more youth? The floor's open to any/all notions...

I like option 2.

Sign a few older players to 1 yr deals.  Don't give  them any NTC or NMC rights..

We will suck next years anyways ...  and then trade them at the the TDL to a playoff team for picks.....

Keep getting more depth in our organization....  more picks.. more development... more prospects...

We are 5 years away still from making a run in the playoffs.

I'm curious if this would work the same as it did for the Maple Fleas? The league wanted that cash-cow to get rollin'

I like option 6.  Why spend it just to spend it?  If it doesn't make the team better I would rather the Canucks continue to give the young guys the ice time and build for the future.

I tend to agree..but then the next day I try to sign Alzner & Schultz, whilst prank-calling Bettman's NHL Hindquarters.

Has this team driven me to a bi-polar state?(like California)..stay tuned folks

According to NHL Numbers we have over $20M right now. Then, will we lose Sbisa in the draft and will Dorsett come back? I realize we have to sign some people but we have money. The question is, what to do? Is the draft better next year, making it worth tanking? In which case we could take on some contracts and accumulate picks, or should JB play lets make a deal and bring in some good young talent through trades? Stay tuned.

Also, as long as we're bring in young talent, it's all the same.

The Sedins aren't retiring and will probably still be at least 4 to 5 mil each unless they take a heavy paycut to stay here.

So that's as much as 10 million they'll need to keep free after next season.

UFA gambling often falls flat on its face.  I say keep the turnstiles a rollin', bringing through bulk last chancers, long shotters, and deep scouted nobodies.  Some interesting pieces will emerge out of seemingly nothing, and then use the stockpiled dollars to reward those that earn it the old fashioned way.

I personally prefer us to make a deal with the Stars to eat up a bad contract (Lethonen or Niemi, both with only 1 year left so no harm done for next year's cap hit) and hope to acquire another top-end prospect or a high draft pick.

Louie deal never really made sense to me. The length of the contract, not the idea of playing with the twins...

If we can deal him and retain some salary, then let's do it but part of me thinks last year was a one off for him. Hopefully he's better this year, but would it be a moot point on a rebuilding team?

Trade what vets we can for cap dumps and picks/young talent and aim for 2020 1st round exit. That's the best case scenario I can see at this moment. Making it to the playoffs will show that we have rebuilt into something just missing a few key pieces to put us over the edge as opposed to stringing along players/fans with pipe dreams. No point pushing until the kids are seasoned.

If the team goes after UFA's they should probably target the "character" guys, guys 26 to 30 that have been pigeon holed as 3rd/4th liners, guys with NHL experience. I remember when Battleship Kelly changed team and became a scoring machine for a season, the same with Tiger Williams.

At the least they should have size, the determination will come from being given a chance to do other than the grunt work.

I wouldn't be surprised is an internal cap is created by management over the next couple years to help offset the diving revenues.  It's a business and ticket prices continue to drop as a result of a losing product owners won't continue to be satisfied with spending to the cap just for two gauranteed games at home if the team makes the playoffs.  Yes money is coming off the books, even with resigning some guys, and when the Sedins and Miller are done the twenty million spent last year will likely cost less than half for their replacements.  For the rebuild to work money has to be available to sign those that have earned it, their wealth contract (typically their second or third contract).  First time UFAs should be avoided, almost always a team pays a premium for past production.

I'd like to order the 5-6-7 rebuild combo, and mega size that combo please.

Extra sides of meat and taters, gravy, some grits, poutine, slaw and a chocolate milkshake. Actually, make that two gravy's
