At the right price I'd say that he's still a very decent 5-6. I thought he had a good quiet series against the Senators.

 

That contract was just awful though.

I still have a HUGE problem with this 'Get out of Jail free card' that the GM's/Owners gave themselves with this buyout BS.  If you're a GM/Owner and you eff up a contract you should be stuck with it good or bad - yes, I know that statement has ramifications for our club as well.

It's not exactly "free". It still costs real dollars AND cap space.  Just less than having the player play out the contract.  It's not like the NFL where the contracts aren't guaranteed and teams can just terminate unwanted contracts.

Girardi will count for $2.6 million against the cap next season, $3.6 million in the next two years and $1.1 million for the following three seasons starting with 2020-21

Yeah, it's really not a get out of jail free card.
