Just the Devils?  You might owe this man an apology

Image result for chiarelli

Basically traded them a superstar forward for a #2/#3 defensemen. NJ then filled this hole by trading a (very good, but unneeded) middle 6 centre to Anaheim.

Poor chirelli, traded Hall for an asset with the value of a good 3rd C

Pretty sure the great one is top 5 in both all-time :P. For Gretzky it's relative. A lot of Pettersson's assists are primary as well. I wouldn't dare compare Pettersson to Gretzky though. I wouldn't even compare McDavid.

Gretzky got 517 points in 85 games in one season in a junior league. Let that sink in.

top 5 in both?  #1 in both, by a mile

It's weird to say, but we may have actually gotten the best forward in the top five. Hischier and Patrick are playing in the NHL but aren't exactly taking it by storm. What Pettersson has done thus far this season is basically unheard of. He's been that dominate. After drafting Virtanen and Juolevi (both of whom I think will still be really solid NHL'ers, Jake is gradually rounding into form) it's really nice to see how excited most fans seem to be now that the draft dust has settled. If Elias can translate even some of his potential to the NHL and fill out we've got ourselves a real game changing player.

I think if we won the lottery, this was still Benning's pick.

Hopefully our luck held out for 1st overall this year!

What Pettersson has done to date is truly remarkable. If you told me after the draft last year that Pettersson would have this season, I would've thought you were nuts. It's absolutely unfathomable how good he's been this year. The fact that we landed this extraordinary talent at 5th overall really says something about our drafting crew. I would be used to another team landing a talent like this, but the fact that our Canucks landed him makes me really happy. The crazy part is, he's not done. He still has some games left to improve upon his already earth shattering numbers. This is the type of move that could elevate a franchise if we are able to continue building around him and surround him with compatible talent.

I am extremely happy that we have Pettersson in the organization.

I hope they don't put him into the lineup next year before he's ready, physically.  They need to be patient with him

I don't think Gretzky ever got 517 points in a Junior league. He did have 517 points as a 10 year old Atom player though.

Mario Lemieux holds the single season record for CHL scoring at 282 points in 70 games during the 83/84 season.

This is a much more competitive era...than the one that Gretzky played in,  there is no way anybody is going to get a 200 point season again or stand out more than he did...he was just so much better than everybody else back then.

EP has a bit of his magic and will stand out even more than BB is doing this year....it would be almost criminal to try to keep him in the AHL for any time at all...it will also be between EP and Dahlin for the Calder trophy next year...why would you hinder that with time in the minors...?

While I believe it's possible, I'm also not expecting it. The kid is doing something special but everyone adapts to the NHL differently and I've been hurt before.

Your welcome...

And with that retort, “I said good day sir, good day!”

You are pure evil and I applaud you for it.

What hischier is doing is really impressive. He’s a skinny (175lb) 19 year old, centering a first line in the NHL in one of the toughest divisions. On any giving night he’s matched up against Crosby/Malkin, backstrom, Tavares, giroux and is still managing to put up 41 points in 63 games.

Pettersson still could very well (and I hope he does) be the best forward/pick  in the top 5 but I don’t think it’s fair to undersell how good hischer has been this year.

A fair response, I got a bit ahead of myself there. When you put it that way what he's done is truly impressive.

Anyone who says Pettersson doesn't pass this so called eye test need to have their eyes checked or watch closer.

I've watched a tonne of hockey as a lot of other fans have and have to say I've been bang on about a lot of evaluating players and this kid is generational.

Pettersson does very special things in all facets of the game and from all the games that I've seen him play the only thing that gets in his way when he's not producing is his teammates not being near the same overall level and that's it.

Great news is from what we've seen of other Canucks youngsters strong overall games I think he'll only be stronger all around than he already is and that's going to make him shine as a generational player he is.

Not easy saying such a thing as it's so rare but I'm betting on it with this kid.

I feel your pain...until he plays his first NHL game it is still conjecture...and I have been hurt as much as any Canuck Fan...but that also makes me old enough to remember seeing Bure for the first time and there was some of that with Boeser....with EP's first game...people will be saying "whatever was I thinking that he needed time in the minors" and "Bure who....?"

EP will rock your world real soon...."How did he do that?"  ...will be the most used phrase in Canucknation....
