Elias Pettersson | #40 | C

We need to remember that kids coming out of college are 20 or 21.  Pettersson is doing what he is doing at 18 and 19 years old in an adult league.  It seems like a bigger deal that he is doing it at such a young age.

Yeah, I can't see Pettersson in Sweden again next year. I'm not saying it would be totally redundant or anything, but when you're literally the best player in a league, there isn't a whole lot more for you to prove in that league.

There's just so much more he can learn coming and so many more opportunities for him in NA. Even if he doesn't make the main squad, he'll still have the chance to become accustomed to the NA game and NA sized ice in Utica, not to mention he'd already be developing chemistry with future teammates, and in the event that he did light it up in the AHL, could still be called up.

If he plays another year in Sweden he loses all of that.

 too practical man.

Although kids today seem like they are ok to wait a bit. Boeser didn't seem in a huge hurry and wanted another college year.

You raise a really good point about how for some players it’s not as much about the money as it is to satisfy their need to compete.  I think the Twins are like that, and so are Bo and Boeser.  It appears Gaudette and Pettersson are like that too.  Yes, these guys will get paid, and deservingly, but it’s not the money that drives them.  Pettersson will be here next season, because he needs to compete with the best.  Gaudette too.

This guy is such an idiot. Glad he doesn't run the team.

I just laughed so hard seeing you quote yourself hahahaha.  In fairness this pick did throw a lot of us off since a few mock drafts were guessing he would be closer to 8-10 range.  And with how much the Vancouver media at the time was absolutely pounding Glass/Vilardi down our throats, to see them draft someone else it caught a bunch off guard.

Was just lookin at stats on Elite prospects and pettersson is now up to 21 goals on the season in 50 games. I guess hes been credited with a goal from a previous game? anyone know how is stats went up without him playing another game?

EDIT: just went to see if Ryan Biech (reliable guy for prospect watch) has updated anything on Pettersson's point totals. He hasn't updated on pattersson since his last game

To be totally honest, I kinda figured we were going to select Pettersson, but I was hoping for Vilardi or Glass. Pettersson's size really threw me off and I wanted to go with someone I thought was a bit safer.

Glad it looks like my fears were unjustified.

I thought Glass fit the mold we wanted.  Not quite as skilled but definitely physically more matured.  Also what do I know?  I don't get paid a good living to watch hockey so I can't judge people who do this always.

EP has to play where his talent level is at....which is NHL level, without a doubt in anyone's mind.

Elias has 7 months to gain the 7 pounds of muscle that I think he needs to "play safe" in any men's league...the AHL is every bit as rough and tumble as the NHL...but with more goon's and less brains...so bad things can happen down there just as easy.

It is almost like saying McJesus should have started in the AHL to get used to the speed...makes me chuckle...

It is going to be a blast watching all these kids push the Dowd's and Gagner's out of the lineup...

I would love to give this 10 thumbs up. E P's coach want EP back in Sweden for one reason and One reason only. So he can win Hockey games. Newsflash to all the Haters EP is so ready now and not just to skate but to make a huge impact in the NHL. Not like he is playing against boys. Sure the NHL calibre will be better but EP scores goals that NHL defenders and Goalies would not stop. Having Brock and EP on the same line will open them both up.

Heh, did you read some of the comments in the SN article.  In this case it wasn't shoulda drafted Kopitarz it was SHOULDA TRADED DOWNz!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Dim Jim coulda easily acquired an extra 4th round pick AND picked Pettersson 6th or 7th.

...should've traded down one spot

...should trade Cassels for a 7th rounder

etc

etc

I'm almost tempted to start a list of all these "bright" ideas, could have 40 picks by now for the 2018 draft.

Stupid to risk losing your man. JB would have probably picked EP had they won the draft lottery. But that's just a moot point for argument... Had JB picked EP 2nd over all we would all be liking it today or most anyways. There is always the group if you say its white they say Black. Those are in Elliot  Friedmans camp

Vilardi looks pretty good not gonna lie. If he was only 30 days older  with the kind of numbers he's putting in the OHL, he would be a top 3 pick in this draft.

Just checking out the stats of Kent Nilsson...... wow!

Stanley Cup with the Oilers, most points in a season by a Swede and Flame at 131 pts, most assists by a Flame in a season at 82.... a player who Wayne Gretzky said was the most skilled he has ever played with.

Random information.... he's the father of former NHLer and 2003 1st round draft pick of the Islanders, Robert Nilsson.  Robert happens to be married to Nikolai Khaibulin's daughter.

Anyways.... if EP can be as successful as Kent Nilsson.... it'll be as if the Canucks found a Henrik Sedin/Markus Naslund hybrid! :o

686 points in 553 games, amazing skill aptly nicknamed "Magic man".   IT has been said if he tried a bit harder he would be a consistent 100 point per season guy.

He only looks to be LW because you’re defending against him.  He’s RW, but he’s to your left when you play D.

Ok. I just heard earlier in the yr he was all LW.  Guess there was a misunderstanding. I have only seen clips so far outside the WJC. Might be a natural fit with the Sedins :)
