Elias Pettersson | #40 | C

Since we were talking about our first impressions earlier, I'll share mine.

At the draft, my #1 choice was Heiskanen, but I didn't expect him to get past both Dallas and Colorado who were picking before us. He was a long shot. Therefore, my more realistic target was Vilardi. I thought/think he's really smart down low and makes a lot of little, effective plays to get the puck to his open teammates. I though he would've fit very well with Horvat in our forward group. The skating was a concern, but his size and IQ would make up for it. I was actually more worried about Boeser's skating as he didn't/doesn't have the size factor to fall back on.

Pettersson was on my radar early in the year, but not so much after that. I really zeroed in on Vilardi, tried to learn more on Glass, etc. In one of my last posts in the 2017 draft thread, I said Pettersson (along with a bunch of others) would be decent options if we went off the board, but Vilardi should be our guy. I was disappointed initially, but a quick look at the stats put that to rest. Of course the size was the issue, but I'd be comfortable at him playing at 175lbs-180lbs in the NHL as long as he's not getting thrown around and manhandled.

Obviously throughout this year, he's put a lot of those concerns and slight regrets to sleep.

I don't remember seeing Pettersson on any armchair GM's list. I personally wanted Liljegren.

Fast Forward to today and Pettersson looks like he could be the best player from that draft. If it was re-done today I have a hard time believing he wouldn't go first overall. He's going to do big things for the Canucks.

I think, in the last month or two, we're also seeing the difference between college trained kids and kids from Jr.  The grind of a long season is definitely showing on Boeser, imo.

Boeser has played top line TOI pretty much all year. Not many nights he isn't getting 'special' attention. I thought Stecher ran out of gas at the close last year. A year later and he is looking much stronger and playing a better game.

Gotta say I wanted Glass, but this guy Pettersson is looking pretty fantastic. Really hoping he can translate to the NHL game as a center. If not maybe Tkachuk can? Listed as Winger/Center most places. The more I hear about Tkachuk the more he is growing on me. Tkachuk/Pettersson duo would be really annoying to play against. Then you might have a Virtanen/Gaudette 3rd line, sprinkle in some Gadjovich there. I am super excited about this team's future.

1A Dahlen - Bo - Boeser

1B 2018 Draft Pick - Pettersson - Lind(?)

3 Gadjovich - Gaudette - Virtanen

That's assuming all those fellers work out according to plan. Which is very hopeful but still, that's an exciting crop of players. Lots and lots of possibilities. Dahlen could play 3rd, 2018 pick could play top line. Gadjovich with Pettersson. Feel like a kid on Christmas thinking about what could be.

Despite missing two-plus weeks to earn a World Junior silver medal with Sweden this past Christmas, Vancouver’s No. 5 overall selection last June sits second in the SHL in scoring. With a pair of points Thursday night, Pettersson moved past legend Peter Forsberg as the second-highest scoring teenager in SHL history. The Hall Of Famer posted 48 points in 1992-93.

With 20 goals and 50 points in just 40 games for Vaxjo HC, Pettersson is scoring at a 1.25 points-per-game clip and is now just four points away — with four games left in the season — from breaking Kent Nilsson’s 42-year-old SHL record for points by a U20 player.

Dobber Prospects currently ranks Pettersson as the Canucks top prospect, and the SHL rookie’s torrid pace of production this season has lifted his stock into can’t-miss territory. The kid is on the path to becoming an NHL star some day, the only questions seems to be when.

“This tremendous season has not gone unnoticed … as Pettersson is now-viewed as an absolute blue-chipper. There will be growing pains, but the lanky forward offers the full offensive package with tremendous vision and a release that will have teams scratching their heads over who to load up on, Boeser or Pettersson, on the Canucks’ top power play in the near future,” DP’s Cam Robinson recently wrote.

There’s no indication yet as to when the Canucks plan to bring Pettersson into the mix, but most signs point to the Swedish star being ready to battle for a roster spot – and maybe even a role in the team’s top-six – as soon as next season.

Great post coolcanuckle head.  Keep in mind though, Dobber ranks prospects purely on FANTASY potential.  That being said, I'm sure every other sight would still have him as the Canucks top prospect as well.

;Boeser has been playing with a bad hand for a month now...it has affected both his velocity and accuracy of his shot and caused him to not take hard passes cleanly...

As soon as you see his right hand without the tension wrap on it ...then you can start saying he is running out of gas...but I don't think you will ...because he will be scoring again...! as it is he is still getting points...

Against the Rangers he was back ripping the puck, so hopefully that's the sign that he's near healed.

EP / Bo / BB

Dahlen / Gaudette / Virtanen

Lipsiec / Sutter / Goldy

Gaunce / Motte / Eriksson

Gagner or MacEwen....guess who I would choose....

...by Xmas....if Sedins retire...

That team would get absolutely hammered.

I hope Goldy has grown some balls by then.

Some factoids posted elsewhere:

  • Has scored 50p while only averaging 16min a game
  • Has only been on ice for 12 goals against all season
  • Is only 1 point behind shl leader despite lagging 7 games behind
  • Has 11 more points than nearest teammate
  • Has already scored over 100 points in mens leagues despite being a teenageer
  • Second in +/- in shl
  • Only second junior in history to reach 50p in shl

So no excuses can be made for him being carried along, sheltered, or poor defensively.  Yes he's on a strong team, but he is far and away its best offensive player.  Next ones on Växjö are at 10th, 13th, and 22nd in the league at 39, 36, and 31 points.

That might be the most impressive.stat from what you mentioned

Complete worst case scenario type of guy aren’t yah eh?

I am just not in an rush. If some of them need time to get stronger or just mature a bit that's fine with me. We will have another group from this years draft and next and so on..............

The Oilers rushed their prospects in and ruined most of them.  Gaudette is older and might be the most ready. Drafting is only the first step then there is this thing called developing. The Oilers thought developing meant throw them into the NHL at 18 and hope they figure it out.

That's argument for.

The argument against keeping him away from the NHL is the older he gets, the harder it will be for him to get used to the smaller rink and the North American lifestyle. The longer he stays in Sweden, the more reluctant he will be to leave home.

Most of the Oilers' doomed prospects were Canadians. Even Yakupov played junior here. It's different for local guys. They have the advantage of not having to worry about different lifestyle, culture and not having to move so far away from home.

Imagine if Elias meets a Swedish sweetheart and she doesn't want to come to Vancouver....

In my opinion he should come next season. And if he is tough enough to play in the AHL, then he is tough enough to play in the NHL. AHL officiating is bush league relative to NHL's. He is safer in the NHL.
