Googlie
The #40 implying 40 goals, or 40 assists (or both? - this is probably his personal objective for his rookie season)

Burrows is not getting his number retired, so might as well have a potential star player wear it than some plug not doing it justice.
Nucker 67
I don't see the issue in wearing #14, but good on Elias to decide to take another number. Burrows made #14 great. Elias will make his own number great. I guess he could do the ole flipperoo and use #41.

Not Tavares, not Karlsson, not Malkin, not Kopitar. I guess McDavid is making a case for himself now too. By definition a generational player comes once a generation so once every 25 years. So yes, it's been quite overused.

Not really similar since Bure had already switched to number 96 and hadn't been number 10 for like 5 years. Not to mention he didn't just retire so it wasn't the same circumstances. Why would there even be a debate? 1

His legacy will always be with #10. It wasn't retired so Letowski used it. Burrows is a great guy and was great for us, but there is no disrespect in one of your future superstars using the number. Would you prefer in about 5 years that some nobody plug takes number 14 instead? #14 is not being retired, so if Pettersson wants it, then I'm fine with it and I'm sure Burrows will be fine with it as well. Again the difference is Burrows just retired, Bure kept playing and was number 10 in Florida. You may not understand it, but there's a code of respect among hockey players. Pettersson gets it which is why he said he won't wear 14.
