How do we pronounce your name properly?

Elias Pettersson smiled and replied: "Elias Pettersson."

Elias Pettersson?

"No, Elias Pettersson…"

Oh.

"It doesn't matter," he laughed. "It's not a big problem."

Unless your Swedish pronunciation is up to speed, best of luck saying Pettersson's name right. Truth to be told, he doesn't care what he's called, as long as he's being mentioned in NHL conversations.

The 19-year-old was one of a handful of Vancouver Canucks who skated informally Tuesday morning at Rogers Arena. No coaches, just players and pucks, and no one was happier to be out there than Pettersson, who arrived in Vancouver last Thursday and has been playing Fortnite with fellow prospect Jonathan Dahlen ever since.

The rookie Swedes will be representing the Canucks at the 2018 Young Stars Classic this upcoming weekend in Penticton, BC, so they relished the chance to hit the ice here before hitting the ice there. Pettersson stressed his need to adjust to NHL-sized ice.

"I'm very excited," said Pettersson, the reigning SHL Rookie of the Year, Forward of the Year, and was awarded Guldpucken (league MVP), who signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Canucks in May. "I've always dreamed of playing in the NHL and now I'm one step closer. I'm trying to make the most of it now.

"My main goal is to make the team and obviously it's not up to me, but I'm doing my best to be here as quickly as possible. I know I need to get used to North American ice and it's very positive to have some games before main camp. It's a different game. Smaller ice, more physical, feels quicker, so I need to be ready from the start and adjust my game as I go."

Pettersson, who swapped numbers with prospect Jonah Gadjovich and is now no. 40, focused on adding strength and speed to his game this summer, while also packing on as many pounds as possible. He achieved all three goals and declared himself 100 per cent healed from the thumb injury he suffered at the World Championship in Denmark.

The youngster is ready to rock and has trouble containing his eagerness.

"I've been reading stuff on Twitter and it's good that they're excited because I am too."

I still have my Canucks Mogilny jersey #89. Got it when I was in grade 9. Its the only article of clothing I kept since then.

So, for the Canucks, the best players to wear these numbers:

6 - Boeser (honourable mention to Sami Salo)

40 - Pettersson

41 - Gadjovich

43 - Hughes

48 - Juolevi (sorry Shinkaruk lol) - I also think Olli might begin wearing #4, after Del Zotto leaves.

53 - Horvat

88 - Gaudette (sorry Tryamkin)

Those are some ugly numbers other than Gaudette.

Need to wait until these guys actually play.

I am still thinking EP wants 14 as he wore that number for WJC and probably took 40 at Vaxjo due to another player.

I think Juolevi will get another number when he makes the team.

Hughes seems to wear several numbers so I am not so sure he takes 43 long term either.

If EP doesn't wear 40 I assume Gadj takes it.

But eventually Gaud will be the best 88 and Brock is sure to surpass Sami in the 6.

He did, but has already said he won't wear 14 out of respect for Burrows:

Burr's # won't be retired though.  And a year has passed now so maybe they will convince him it's okay to take it.  Especially with his second choice being Gadj's number.

It is about the next generation now.

Nope, he won't be taking it.

Not sure how it's Gadjovich's number considering he wore #21 most of his junior career. Not to mention one of them will likely be in the NHL next season, one will not.

Gadjovich can wait for Eriksson to give him his number.

One thing that always impresses me about Pettersson is how spot on his analysis of his own game...his strengths and weaknesses...is. From what I've gathered from the interviews I've read, he's extremely intelligent, especially for a kid. That alone should give him a leg up on the competition and bodes extremely well going forward.
