I have a feeling many teams (including the Canucks) are going to pass on Svechnikov and he'll probably drop down to the 8-15 range.

Not a chance. Svechnikov is a virtual lock to go top 3.

The last "hyped" Russian, not named Yakupov was Nichushkin and Grigorenko (who put up better numbers than Svechnikov in juniors) both fell in the draft.

There's a differences between where you are ranked and where you actually end up, despite your talent. Maybe teams are hesitant to pick him, because of the Russian factor or he didn't impress scouts at the combine?

We've been over this many times--Andrej and his brother, and even his mother, have shown a commitment to North America.

Can you post some examples?

Everything I've seen says that while he had a slow start offensively in college, he forgot all that by the time the World Juniors rolled 'round.

you can find one of the articles in this thread. I tried to find it but there are just to many pages. I think sidisme posted it, I I also heard Bob mac on one of his draft shows talking about how some scouts are having second thoughts about him being a top 5 pick because he doesn't drive the play like I mentioned, and with his size, he tends to wait for his teammates to make things happen. He plays well with good players. Just not the guy that is going to dominate. I think he is just A safe pick. We don't need the safe pick. We need more Elite talent. If we don't get top 3 I hope its Quinn Hughes or Wilde or Bovquist etc. I will try to find the article and post it for you once I get home. from the hospital. Cheers

I used to buy the hype that Brady Tkachuck was exactly like Matthew, just "bigger, faster, and nastier." Now, I don't think he has as good offensive positioning or instincts. Conversely, Brady is an outstanding penalty killer, and is toning down the dumb penalties.

I wanted Matthew Tkachuk cause I thought he'd be amazing with Horvat. That logic holds true with Brady, but he could also be a big hulking center.

Some have suggested that Tkachuk would be redundant since we already have Virtanen (and Gadjovich), but that might be overthinking it. Tkachuk is the master of the dump and chase, and Virtanen's speed is deadly on the forecheck. Having the two on the same line would be incredibly hard to contain. We need to build around our young players, and Tkachuk could have amazing chemistry with Horvat, Boeser, Virtanen, and Pettersson.

To summarize, Brady Tkachuk's offensive potential might be questionable, but his overall game makes him a top 5 talent.

Good points. I would rather go for the Elite talent over him.

So was Grigorenko, and where is he playing now?

Yes, he's committed now.....of course he would say that, but ultimately if he isn't given a chance or is mistreated by an organization. He wouldn't think twice of leaving the NHL and fly back to his home country.

Svechnikov is the best at driving the play in this draft--gets so many goals and primary assists. Tkachuk gets a lot of secondary assists and is hesitant to use his shot.
I wonder of Wahlstrom is more of a "Benning pick" than Tkachuk, because he has a better shot. Both play center or wing, which I like, but Tkachuk might be more natural at center because of his size and defensive ability. Wahlstrom is actually heavier, but Tkachuk will bulk up and has a bigger frame.
As far as going for the elite talent, I know what you mean. Hughes and Boqvist are bigger risks than Tkachuk, but have elite skating and offensive potential. I think Bouchard is a good combination of a safe pick and potentially elite talent. I would draft him over Hughes, but my dream scenario is getting another first rounder and taking Hughes, regardless of who we pick top 5. I drool at the thought of Hughes feeding Boeser.

Im drooling of Wahlstrom tbh lol. i doubt we can get another 1st rounder. but i'd be willing to do something with these pieces: tanev, goldobin, 2nd, etc.

Wahlstrom just seems like a Benning pick. But then again, so does Tkachuk. Tkachuk is an elite puck hound like Pettersson and Virtanen, while Wahlstrom has the shot Benning covets.
I think we could trade Tanev + our 2nd, etc. for 9th or 10th overall, but Wahlstrom will probably be gone by then. If Hughes is there I'd be all over that.

but idk if those teams would want tanev cuz they may be semi-rebuilders?  Maybe CHI pick?

Tanev (help make playoffs for them next yr??) + 2nd 2018 (pretty much late 1st) + Goldobin (sweetener)  i'd do that but idk if a team would.

I think Edmonton would love him. Islanders have two picks so they might bite.
Both of those teams have horrible defenses and penalty kills, and could really use Tanev.

If we fall out of the top 3 (Dahlin/Svech/Zadina) then the target should be Adam Boqvist.

He would probably be both BPA and fill our biggest need as that elite skating puck moving PP QB.

Anyone of these would make me happy

Dahlin

Svechnikov

Zadina

Boqvist

Wahlstrom

Tkachuk

Kotkaniemi

Just don't pick Bouchard for god's sake, what an underwhelming outcome that would be after this brutal Canucks season.

Personally, if we fall out of the top 3, IMO we're taking one of Boqvist, Whalstrom, Hughes or Bouchard.

The sad part is I've done the NHL draft lottery simulator and even if the Canucks lose all their remaining games and fall to the very bottom, 9/10 times the Canucks drop from 1st to 4th.

Then don't do it...

Its a lottery. Nobody knows what happens next.......except maybe Bettman
