He's so solid in the neutral zone in either direction, commands his own zone? And can get the puck out by pass or by blade is unreal in a 6'3'' D. Particularly one who can beat forwards to pucks. He was what plus 30 something on the year? On a good, but not dominant team?? Well, fairly dominant as they were 2nd overall in standings. They also only let in 182 goals over the course of the season which is second lowest among teams in all three leagues. I think the QMJHL is slowly starting to turn it around where the offence is not as high compared to the OHL and WHL and the defence is getting a little better. I do wonder how he will progress development wise though. Ideally he would be in the AHL the year after next but I believe he would still have to stay for two more years of junior assuming he doesn't make the jump to the NHL. On the other hand, staying in the QMJHL will theoretically help him develop more offensive skills as he will have the confidence to try new things. I would much rather he be in the OHL or WHL next year as the QMJHL is still the weakest of the three (although they may be turning it around as you point out). Might as well look at the other defensemen too: Hughes: NCAA Boqvist: SHL/AHL Bouchard: OHL (1 year before AHL eligible) Dobson: QMJHL Smith: WHL Boqvist's age and the fact that his development could potentially be controlled in the AHL is a major positive in my mind. It would be a big step up from the SuperElite to the AHL, but an NHL team should be able to cushion him enough. Hughes is also in a good spot in the NCAA. Looking at that list, Dobson is probably in the worst spot.
ilduce39
I think Dahlin, Svetch, Zadina, Tkachuk and Hughes are gone for sure when we draft. I’m back on the Dobson train... with Boqvist as my #2. Still a nice win-win.

He’d be a great late round pick, but he probably won’t be on the board all that late as he seems to be consistently ranked around the 3rd round these days. Lots to like though. Skates really well, great size (6’4” and still growing), one of the youngest players in the draft (August birthday 17yo), RH shot, already has a fairly refined two-way game, put up some decent offensive numbers (I think he was the 3rd highest scoring rookie D in the OHL), and probably still has some untapped offensive potential (since Bouchard ate up most of the PP minutes). He could potentially learn a lot and he would still be getting 15 min of icetime a game...hopefully in the offensive end.

Took me 2 days to fill out the poll question over in the consensus #7 pick thread. Right now watching Dobson set up the play to on that OT game winning goal in the biggest CHL stage proves to me he is a factor in big games. Lets see if he can build upon that. Drafting Dobson or Bouchard at #7 and Tychonick at #38 could become a great 1-2 D pair in the mold of a Keith/Seabrook pairing. Tychonick would be a great pick pick with our second rounder. Penticton Vees prospect, heading over to the University of North Dakota next season. Will spend a few years there bulking up and learning the pro game. Craig Button on TSN 1040 recently said he plays like a Victor Mete. New-age defenseman, perfect for today's style of NHL. 15 hours ago, Alflives said: If Dobson continues to dominate the Memorial Cup, and leads his team to the Championship, he might move into top five. He had the primary assist on the OT winner yesterday against Swift Current. He seems like a guy who can will his team to victory. Plays 25+ minutes a game and is a clutch performer. I would definitely take him after Hughes, Boqvist, and Wahlstrom.

I think Dobson is a taller kind of skinny kid, who is still physically maturing too. Bouchard might be better now, but maybe that has a lot to do with him maturing earlier? I think Dobson will take longer to get to our team, but could really grow into someone special.

Sergachev played in the OHL in his draft +1 year and won the Memorial Cup with Windsor. If/when Dobson goes back, he'll almost certainly be on a weaker Titan squad than what he had this year. Maybe his NHL team could influence a trade next season. I don't like the fact that exposing him to the NHL too early in an extremely sheltered role (likely more sheltered than Sergachev this year in his draft +2 year) could be the best case scenario. Compare that to Boqvist who can play in the AHL next year where his NHL team can control his minutes, deployment, off ice training, etc along with the fact he's still 17 and that sounds like a much better recipe for success. Lonny_Bohonos_14
This is such a odd draft for me. There's really no wrong answer with anyone at our position. Even some of the guys who would be projected as a "reach" at 7 would be great pick ups. I have preferences for sure, but there's no one that I can say that I would be upset with picking. Hughes is my top choice, but I don't think he gets past Detroit. I also think that this may be one of the first drafts in years where we see some movement in the top 10. I think Montreal takes a long look at moving back, and if one or two teams have a "guy" they really want, they may try to jump up to grab them. I keep trying to project who will be available at our pick and I keep having to redo it because I'll be "there's no chance x is available at 7" then I do it again and again and again haha

That and if Benning could part with a 3rd and a guy like Granlund or Baertschi to move up and make sure he gets his guy. Benning and co will have a set draft board especially for the 1rst round so they may see more separation in the top 10 than we do.

flickyoursedin
Dobson putting in his bid to go before the Canucks pick. Goal and an Assist like 1:30 apart. The goal was a nice pinch top corner on a delayed penalty. Assist was meh just getting a quick weak wrister on net and a guy banged in the rebound. TheHockeyNerds
Noah Dobson controls the game like Ryan Suter. Nothing flashy but his IQ puts him in great situations to be effective offensively. Round that out with a great defensive game and you've got something!
