Jim Benning on Sportsnet 650:

"There could be some surprises before we pick. I'm excited to be at seven because if a player or two goes that's not expected to go, maybe we get a player we're not expecting to get."

"I think you can run into problems when you make a pick based on positional needs. I think we should take the best player available. But center-icemen & defensemen retain their value so if it comes between a winger or a centermen or a defensemen, we'll look positionally"

On Quinn Hughes: "He's an exceptional skater, he's a smart player. Watching him at the World Championships, he didn't look out of place against men. Every defenseman has their quality that they're outstanding at, and they could go a lot of different ways in the draft."

I like the positive thinking on Hughes. I don't want to read too much into Benning's specific reactions to every player as it could be a smokescreen, but it's nice that he gave a specific and unique example for Hughes. I'd be ecstatic if we got him at 7th.

If Dobson goes 4-6, then (maybe?) one of Hughes or Boqvist falls to us?  I'd be happy with getting one of those two.

For sure. That's what makes this draft so interesting. So many prospects with equal evaluations will make it so interesting.

Benning keeps mentioning how there might be some surprises in the picks before us, saying some teams might pick positionally. Says someone they didn't expect falls to them. To me that sounds like Brady Tkachuk. He's the only one in the "big 4" I see falling. I wouldn't complain with Tkachuk at pick 7. What do u guys think?

Listened the whole interview. Praised Boqvist and Wahlstrom too. Same with Dobson while on 1040

I wouldn’t be thrilled with Tkachuk at 7 but I wouldn’t hate the pick. I’ve always been a bit lower on Tkachuk because I feel with a different last name we’d be seeing him more as a top 10 than a top 5. However 7 is pretty close to 10 :P so it’s not a crazy pick to have me question it. I’m still just hoping some team before us takes him so I don’t feel bad for having to make the choice.

My opinion changes almost weekly. I imagine Wahlstrom firing lasers, an unstoppable duo with Pettersson. Then I imagine Hughes or Boqvist finally giving us something exciting to cheer for from the back end, a Dman who could skate the puck up the ice with ease and create some offence. Then I imagine Tkachuk and Virtanen hammering opponents left and right, wearing down the enemy, and causing havoc in front of goalies. But knowing Benning, he may take a player not expected.

Benning did say that Cs and Ds hold their value, and it sounds like he would take one of them over a winger. Is Tkachuk or Wahlstrom a natural C? Or are they mainly wingers?

I also wonder, because of this, if he's got Kotkaniemi ranked fairly high. He could be this year's Pettersson.

Tkachuk as a center would be fabulous!  Love to have him play there.  I don't think he is one though.

Heard that Wahlstrom might have compete issues?

I think Boqvist falls to us.  I'd be happy with him.  He's younger than the other guys by several months (so still has a lot of maturing to do) and has HUGE upside.

Do his feet appear a little slow to you?  I really like him, but I'm (kind of) worried about his quickness.  Maybe it's just because he's still maturing into his tall frame?

Pretty sure he's one of the fastest skaters in the draft. Quite rare for a player of his size

I like the offence, and will even more once Pettersson and Dahlen get here. They could use a bit more grit and sand paper up front, but there is quite a bit of skill and some speed. I think adding Boqvist would improve the D quite a bit. Pairing him with Juolevi would allow Boqvist to work his magic, without being a liability. When is the last time the Canucks had a 20-goal scorer on D? Adrian Aucoin (1998/99) with 23 goals. Almost 20 years ago folks. I think Boqvist could be the next one.

Juolevi - Boqvist

Brisebois - Gudbranson

Sautner - Stecher

Pouliot

Chatfield

Tryamkin? Hello? You still out there?

I remember Pedan was our fastest skater, but had very slow feet.  I see Dobson as a slower footed guy.  I'm off him and off Bouchard.  I'm hoping one of Hughes or Dobson falls to us at 7.

Smoke screen...

Quite sure JB's top 10 hasn't been settled yet, but he will have a pretty good idea... the combine and interview will be massive in his final rankings.

Has Benning mentioned Bouchard or Kotkaniemi in any interviews yet?

I don't think JB did mention Bouchard, while he did mention all the other potential guys.  I wonder if there could be anything read into this omission?  Intentional to throw smoke?

He may expect him to be off the board, when its our turn to choose....

Is there a C or a D that Benning hasn't commented on yet? So far I think I've heard: Hughes, Wahlstrom and Dobson get glowing comments from him.

What about Tkachuk, Boqvist, Bouchard and Kotkaniemi? Has he been quiet commenting on these guys?

Habs at 3?

Possibly... JB may be really high on him and thus not wanting to be a cheerleader singing his praises.

I'm sure we'll get a better picture, once the interviews start. Remember him having extended interviews with Pettersson and Glass...to me that was the first indication, he had Pettersson high on his list.

Take Wally or Tkat at 7 and break the bank for Carlson and you speed up the re build

Given JB's comments today, I think they would take the finn cman over both those guys
