Playing with intensity and commitment can go a long way, especially for a smaller player like him. Keith is likely his high end ceiling and I think he's the perfect guy for Hughes to model his game after. He's got the skating, agility, quickness and acceleration to have a similar impact on the game as Kieth. clearly he's getting bad info on the fanbase! I wish we were privy to the interviews, I'm sure they would be fascinating. Defense was my concern when watching him at the WJC but it seems he understands that is what he needs to work on (I haven't seen him in many other games so I don't know if his defending was better playing in university games or at the WC). Defense was my concern when watching him at the WJC but it seems he understands that is what he needs to work on (I haven't seen him in many other games so I don't know if his defending was better playing in university games or at the WC). Hughes didn't get much of an opportunity to showcase his full game at the WJC as the US relied on older players like Fox, Lindgren and Perunovich to play big minutes for them. Hughes was the youngest player on the team (just behind Tkachuk) and was really only used when the US was pushing hard for a goal (Hughes set one up when the team was trailing in the dying minutes). I think he played like 6 minutes in total against Sweden and 3 of those minutes were in the last 5 minutes of the game as they tried to tie it. Curiously, Hughes has gotten nothing but good reports against much older, stronger and better competition at the WC. He didn't look out of place among some of the NHL's best even with his limited minutes. There was one play where he stuck to Horvat (who is considerably bigger, stronger and older than Hughes) with his skating and stole the puck. That's the type of defense Hughes plays against bigger players, using his elite skating and a quick stick to retrieve possession from players. Hughes has probably been playing against the highest level of competition of the defensemen in our range. The players in the NCAA are considerably bigger, stronger, faster and older than players in the CHL and likely the SuperElit league that Boqvist played in. We all know that Hughes produced offensively at that level (more draft year production than Werenski and McAvoy), but he was also trusted defensively too. He was often out holding a lead with less than a minute left. He wasn't a mainstay on the penalty kill, but he was occasionally put in that situation. Obviously he's not above mistakes and bad decisions, but it wouldn't be a stretch to say that he's a good defender with a great offensive game. A season's worth of scouting is debated behind closed doors as the Vancouver Canucks prepare for the 2018 NHL Entry Draft. I watched the prospects games but I'm not going to sit here and tell anyone I clearly remember them and how EB played? Could easily be talking about Dobson, no? Isam
For centers. Got the vibe that they were talking about veleno and a certain Finn that is rumored to go in the top ten.

If we go dman it will be Juolevi 2.0 all over again here in CDC land and chaos will ensue, and media will turn on fans and fans will turn on each other......... Exactly! Gonna be a really interesting draft day just can't wait. Most interesting would be if we trade the pick to Carolina for Hanafin. Maybe it makes sense if Carolina has Tkachuk as their 2nd/3rd rated prospect he is also potentially NHL ready. But the flipside is if Hanifin tops out and they take Tkachuk and he becomes an all star!

I also never included Baer, Granlund. and Leipsic. as I'm not sure they'll be a part of the new core down the road. But who knows? That is a very good point. Wingers are much easier to acquire via trade than top Cs and Ds. Another good point, these are just rankings based on stats and momentum, etc. They don't rank their character, which is huge for Benning. Probably 100% sure he doesn't draft Merkley lol Dobson seem like a real good kid, and just won a Memorial Cup. Benning likes to draft winners (Virtanen, Demko, Gaudette, Boeser, Juolevi, Pettersson, Gadjovich, DiPietro). I can see him taking Dobson. Yea I'm fairly confident Hughes and Dobson are going to be the Canucks top D targets!

Dahlin Svechnikov Zadina Hughes Wahlstrom Tkachuk Dobson My only issue with the trade is if we have to add to it. I want one of these 7 players very badly with Boqvist and Kotkaniemi as dark horses that if managements picks them I'll be happy because I'll trust them. Hanifin comes with question marks. He's shown he will at least be a number 3-4 with still potential to be a 1-2. I'm not going to pretend I know the future or what would be best but I am going to trust management on this one. Canucks also must have heavily scouted him his draft year and kept an eye on him since so if they believe he will be a better player then whoever they could take at 7 then I'll support the trade. Going to to be an interesting draft plus free agency! Hope we have lots of good things to discuss

But I do think Hanifin is scary, but he is kinda promising. Lol. Just keep our assets and take a chance at one of the many great prospects at our pick I say. Definitely an interesting summer ahead. To me I just don't see the point because I project Dobson as minimum 3 or 4th defenceman but I think his top pairing upside is higher than Hanifin at this point. Canucks are still nowhere near ready to compete and it's better to stay with the younger defenceman.
