Any updates on Jack Rathbone?

Hasn't played yet. His season starts next month. I believe the first actual game is November 29th (with a couple exhibition scrimmages earlier in the month).

Dexter School schedule is here:

Jack Rathbone finally took to the ice earlier today for his first scrimmage of the preseason.

His season starts November 29th.

Rathbone was also recognized as one of the top USHS players this year as he was named to the 2017-18 ALL-USA preseason boys hockey team (he received 2nd team honours last year):

Too bad we couldn't get this kid on to a CHL team, where he could really develop.

I hear ya. Obviously getting him into a system where he played more games and more months of hockey a year would be preferable. As would a higher level of competition.

But given the particulars of this situation, I'm not too worried about him taking another year at home to stay close to his autistic little brother.

Harvard can wait.

He's still pretty raw and was always going to be a long term project. He's also undersized. And had he been only about 4 months younger, 2018 would have been his first year of draft eligibility.

So the fact he's delaying his career so that he can stay with his little brother is a positive (in terms of his character and values), even if it possibly means slowing his development a little.

I totally agree, and Id add that him choosing to stay and help his brother will also help his maturity. When you have a family member with issues it gives you a better perspective on life. Looking at him as a prospect Ill take a year of him being happy and growing maturely, over one extra year of development.

I am not thrilled with the fact this kid hasn't played a game yet this year. Can't be good for his development at this stage. I understand why he wanted to stay home for another year (relationship with younger brother) but at least he could've played a few USHL games or something....November 29th is a ridiculously late start.

I doubt we see him for at least the next 4yrs anyways.  The Harvard guys  tend to go the full 4yrs. Jack Rathbone (I love the name) seems like a prospect that will need a lot of developing time, so he may as well be in the college league.

He's in high school.

He was accepted into Harvard, but chose to stay close by his younger brother this year; hence the high school league.

Like I said earlier, he looks like a guy that will need a few years of development anyways.  I don't expect too hear much from him for at least 3 years.  Probably won't even see him at prospect camps due to his college commitment.

I think this guy is still in high school.

Yup, he sure is and the school route has provided many stellar NHL players.   Development takes many forms and the rigours of major junior hockey probably harm as many careers as blossom others.   Each kid will choose a path they feel best suited for them - if they make the wrong decision, it is "oh well" but it is far from one size fits all.   CHL is consumed with games and have very little practice time.  High school, college and European junior leagues are the opposite.   If I could do it all over again, I would choose more practice or more games for a variety of reasons - but that is just me and I didn't have the choice.   For JR, who I still think has the name to be a porn star, I don't have a clue which path is best for him but to say his development is harmed by playing fewer games and instead doing (for example) more dryland or other forms of training is simply something you can at best speculate at but in reality, you don't have a clue.

I read here, he's going to Harvard.  I would still rather see our D in the WHL or OHL, but he's getting to attend Harvard.  That's a great academic school.
