Popular Post SID.IS.SID.ME.IS.ME
First period over. USA 1 - Harvard 0. Rathbone’s shifts have generally been tilted toward the USA end. He hasn’t had to defend much, but looked solid on the couple times he did. In the offensive zone, he’s looked good. Quick, accurate passes. Three shot attempts, one on goal. Lots of movement and not afraid to go one-on-one with the puck on his stick and try to beat guys to create a chance. One time he just went “around the world” and carried from the left point, down around the corner, behind the net, and back up to the right point, before passing off to a teammate for a SOG. SID.IS.SID.ME.IS.ME
Bit of a rough shift for Rathbone. Just caught out too long and you could tell his legs were burning by the end. Tried to change twice but his mates would turnover the puck and he’d have to rush back on D. To Jack’s credit, he played solid positional D, even while gassed, and survived the shift without giving up much in the way of shots/chances and USA didn’t score. Earlier the same shift, you could tell Jack was a maybe little frustrated with his Harvard teammates who were not moving the puck well. At one point, he chased down a teammate forward, who was lumbering throughbthe neutral zone, took the puck off him at the blue line, and carried in himself to create a chance. Hopefully at ice level he was talking and the teammate knew he was coming. Just looked funny. Like Jack was saying F-it, I’ll just do this myself if you guys won’t. After that rush, Jack had to get back and defend an extended sequence. And then couldn’t get off the ice because Harvard kept turning it over in the neutral zone. Seemed like his shift lasted 90 seconds. 1 1

SID.IS.SID.ME.IS.ME
Commentators giving Jack some love. Saying he’s looked real good tonight. And now 3-0. Rathbone takes his first minus. He defended pretty well but teammates caught a little flat footed.

SID.IS.SID.ME.IS.ME
Had a phone call so had to interrupt the updates. 2nd period is in the books. USA leads 5-1. Rathbone with a couple miscues but generally playing well. In particular, he’s looked good on the PP, with the Rathbone unit looking more dangerous than Fox’s first unit. 3rd period underway. Rathbone just stopped Hughes for what may have been a goal otherwise. Hughes dancing between Harvard defenders until Rathbone took the puck away. 1
SID.IS.SID.ME.IS.ME
Rathbone seems to be playing more in the 3rd, possibly due to earning his coaches’ trust? Out on the PK right now against Hughes and the USA top unit. Makes a recovery and a quick outlet to create a short handed 2-on-1. Rathbone follows up as the trailer and was wide open but his teammate shot instead (didn’t score). Jack also picked up a plus on the earlier Harvard goal so should be back to even on the night. 5-2 USA

Popular Post SID.IS.SID.ME.IS.ME
Game ends 6-3. Harvard gives up a late EN goal off of a Fox turnover in his own zone. Adam Fox is fun to watch offensively, and he scored twice tonight, but he can be a real adventure in his own zone. Rathbone didn’t play the last couple minutes. Harvard pulled the goalie and played with two vets on the back end. Which obviously doesn’t reflect poorly on Jack, although I’d liked to have seen his cannon on the left side, as the guy there’s was firing muffins. Anyway, solid first game for Rathbone. Scoreboard doesn’t look great, but that US team is a juggernaut and they’ve already rolled over Notre Dame and Michigan, so Harvard wasn’t a good bet to upset Hughes and company. Rathbone finished even, with 2 SOG, and probably 5-6 shot attempts. He looked good on the PP and seemed to get more comfortable as time went on. He last PP shift, he was directing traffic and barking orders like a vet. Harvard had good movement when Jack was out and created chances, but couldn’t convert. Big standout was Jack’s skating on defense. He’s so smooth that you almost don’t notice it, but he’d be skating backwards and simply matching the speed of a rushing opponent skating forward and going flat out. Jack just maintained his gap, matched his man’s movements, and just gave up nothing. He was consistently angling guys off or just tying them up when they tried to power through him. And these were some of the top USA skaters. Also showed a good quick stick, poking away pucks, or deflecting shots. Moved the puck quickly. Nice passes on breakouts. And good sequences in the offensive zone. Would’ve liked to have seen his Harvard teammates return the favour a few times. Jack would skate into open ice in shooting position, and his teammates would pass it into traffic and off skates, instead of using the open lane that would have created a Rathbone one timer. That will likely improve with time. But there were several sequences where Rathbone would use his skating to quickly move into open space, anticipating the puck would find him, and instead his teammates just booted it around and seemed not to be looking for Rathbone. I liked that Harvard used him in all situations tonight. Getting consistent minutes on the second PP, killing penalties, and getting regular shifts at 5v5. Rathbone looked good in all these roles tonight. 4 3
Kosmo Kramer
@SID.IS.SID.ME.IS.ME Thanks for the updates on his first game, I appreciate what you do here big time. Was great to hear he did so well. I'm sure his team will see how valuable he is and start looking for him to dish the puck to.

Didn’t want to miss this one and so I figured I’d do a little play by play. Especially since there wasn’t a free stream (or at least there wasn’t a legal one ). 2
SID.IS.SID.ME.IS.ME
Word out of Harvard is that Rathbone has locked down a spot in their top-6 this season. This despite him being the youngest Dman (at 19) on a deep defensive group that includes two 20-year-olds, four 21-year-olds and two 22-year-olds. Nice to track him in a league with better comparisons like the NCAA.

There was just a chance that he'd start maybe as a 7/8 and have to prove his way before he became a regular. But it sounds like they're really happy with him and are already pencilling him into the top-6. Last night, I think he showed he's more than ready. That USNTDP team may be the toughest competition Harvard faces all season, and Rathbone looked like one of their best defenders in that game. And they used him in all situations and he thrived. I expect he'll be second pairing, 2nd unit PPQB, and a regular on their PK. Edited October 21, 2018 by SID.IS.SID.ME.IS.ME 2
