[Buyout] CBJ buys out Scott Hartnell

Recommended Posts

Hartnell could be an interesting pickup, but he is in his mid 30s and most probably on the decline.

With exception to his first season, he's had AT LEAST 30 points in a season, including last year, where he has put up respectable numbers. (13 g, 24 assists = 37 points)

His first year in Columbus, he put up 60 pts and that team wasn't even that good. It's clear that there is some sort of a decline, but at 35 years old, he is not quite ready to be considered "washed up".

Probably doesn't fit Vancouver's 'rebuild' model, but then again, since we're not competing - and if we need LW players, he could be an okay player to have. Hartnell is a clutch player, often scoring big goals.

Interesting... If he wasn't so damn slow, he'd be a good pickup for a year too.

CBJ is still getting a cap hit of 7 mil over 4 years vs. 4.75 per year for 2 years... seems like a odd move, you'd think he'd have as much to offer a contending teams as Burr .e.g. Totally different players I know but still.

This is interesting.  If they were gonna do it, they should have done it before last season.

I actually like Hartnell, and think he would help our team.  But with the recent influx of young blood, do we have room for him in the lineup for a short contract?

He's the kind of guy the Pens, or some other really close to the Cup team will sign for one season at 1 million bucks.  If he wants more than a one year deal, then he will go to a middle team, like the Flyers, or Habs.  Not a chance he chooses a team like us.

Not sure where you are getting your numbers from but here is the cap hit according to CapFriendly. Ignore my reply as I read it as $7M per year.

isn't the cap hit for the next 4 years from the buyout 1.5+3+1.25+1.25? His regular salary was 4.75 per. they're not saving that much money with this buyout.

Torts needs to be top dog, even at the expense of a good team.
