milk and honey
Hey everyone, recently I got a Job offer just south of the boarder in Seattle. I have visited it a couple times but really don't know anything except where the sports arenas and fields are at. I'm guessing climate wise is really similar to lower mainland. Hows renting an apartment there? Any ghetto spots to avoid? What are some good suburbs? Immigration stuff like work visa, getting green card, ect... I already Googled but I would like some opinions of Seattle. Thanks guys
Down by the River
Seattle reminds me so much of Vancouver but with a better post-work lifestyle. If you like good restaurants and pubs but don't like having to make reservations in advance, Seattle is great. I like the Capitol Hill area, which can be a bit more 'ghetto' to some but to me it has character. Oh, and the Space Needle area (Bell Town) is definitely ghetto. You don't want to live there, though there are some cool places to eat in the area.

-AJ-
I only visited the place for a little while once, haven't been there too much. As a tourist, it was pretty nice. Did remind me a bit of Vancouver. Not sure what it's like to live there though.

YEGCanuck
Always liked to visit Seattle for play and work when I lived in Vancouver. It's close, has a good social scene and virtually anything you could want in a big city. The MLB and NFL fields are south of downtown between I5 and the waterfront. Jägermeister
Seattle is basically Vancouver with less to do outside the city (outdoor activities), but a lot more to do inside the city (food, bars, music, etc.).
kloubek
It has a cool vibe overall. What I didn't like though is that they have this tangled network of roads and overpasses that makes it nearly impossible to know where you are or how to get anywhere in that area. GPS is of limited help, since it doesn't know what "level" you are on, so it can't figure out how to direct you. I got SO frustrated there. MattWN
There is a &^@#ing great BBQ food truck in Seattle, what more do you need?
smithers joe
i got lost there on my honeymoon. my wife wanted to go to fisherman's wharf. she said she knew how to get there. i followed her directions, but ended up on the freeway heading towards portland. getting off the freeway was not fun. when we finally got back to seattle we stopped at the waldorf astoria and i had very stiff drink. you don't want to be anywhere near the boeing plant at rush hour. Pretty much. Though outside of Seattle they still have lots of mountains, lakes, forests, beaches etc if you like the outdoors. We've got far better transit and this may come as a a shock given how crappy our traffic can get but traffic as well. The closer you get to Seattle on the I5...traffic is just a gong show. Like all day, every day.

Ghostsof1915
Take Vancouver. Clear Cut it. That's Seattle. That's why what Jag says is essentially correct.

brilac
I live downtown, and pay $1598+$30 pet rent, and utilities. You can probably find a place cheaper than what I pay. Capitol Hill is ok. I lived there for 10 years, and moved down the street to downtown in November. I paid $848 with w/s/g included, and they raised the rent to $1050, and I thought it was too much for the place, and got more by moving down the street. For neighborhoods, I prefer South Lake Union and West Seattle, and plan to move to one of those neighborhoods once my lease is up, preferably a studio or micro apartment. I live with a cat, and that's all I need. Also in WA State, liquor/wine/champagne are sold at the grocery stores. So instead of going to the liquor store, you can pick up a bottle of wine or whatever until 2am. Also, you will find that airfare is much cheaper to fly out of Seattle than Vancouver. As for restaurants, there are a lot of great restaurants all around. I really like the Flying Fish in South Lake Union, Citris Thai Downtown, as well as Purple and the Carlile Room. Don't know about the local lay of the land though - crime, etc. Good luck, regardless
