That's surprising given their acquisitions etc!

Their bottom D pairing got a whole long stronger now that they can show Bartkowski the door.  Stone is a solid d man, i was hoping he would fall to us here.

Same and move Tanev for futures. Would have been just fine with:

Edler, Stecher

MDZ, Gudbranson

Hutton, Stone

Man Calgary's D is ridiculous.

Geez, on much more can you spend on defense????

With Stone that's 25M$ for 6 players.....so a third of the cap spent on defense and that's doesn't include a 7 or 8th defenseman.  If they suffer 1 or 2 mid term injury, they are screwed.

Plus that's not a lot of money to resign Bennett, Ferland and in a few years Tkatchuk.

Seriously, I don't see Calgary as a perennial contender in the next few years...Giordano is regressing, Hamilton plateaued, Monahan doesn't look like he'll be a 1st line stud,

Good news for the Canucks.

Yup, I think what happens tomorrow will really tell us the future of Tanev.  If you see a couple solid pick ups on D I suspect Tanev will be on the outs at the Trade Deadline.  I havent looked to see which D men will be availble as UFAs tomorrow, it will take some over payment to get a good dman to come here though.

We just need a solid bottom 4 guy. We don't need anything crazy or expensive.

Not really getting the same sense of concern that you have for their cap. Majority of their key guys are locked in already and they still have 9 million in cap space to work with. Bennett will get a bridge contract worth around 2.5-3 million for a couple of years I imagine. Ferland will not/should not get more than 3 million. We will see how Tkachuk does in his sophomore season with more players/teams knowing his antics. There will be plenty of cheap depth dmen that they could acquire.

That's roughly 25mil locked up on defense for only 5 guys.

Nashville, with arguably the best/deepest core of defense in the league, has 8 guys under contract for 22 mil.

Everyone saying Cgy defense is stacked may need to look more closely at the 3 plugs/rookies they're going to have to play on a regular basis to fill out a full roster.

But, but I thought paying a 3rd pairing d-man $3.5M made a GM an idiot..........at least that is what CDC always told me.

Sbeezus was #1 DMAN! top pairing, franchise cornerstone kinda guy! :(

They are very lucky to have Ekholm and Josi on the contracts that they have. Perhaps they have a good system that makes their defense look great because Yannick Weber sure didn't look incredible here. When we had him as our number 6 or 7 guy, no one would say we had one of the deepest cores in the league.

This top 5 d is locked for 3 years...looks like that's their window. Hamonic and Brodie are on reasonable deals which allows them to pay for Stone I guess.

Someone mentioned that Wideman/Engelland had a higher combined cap hit than Hamonic and Stone. Makes it sound much better.

Apparently Bouma bought out..not sure how much capspace that gives and Stajan off the books after this year. They're doing a great job with cap management &^@#.

Okay.  So the bad news is.......its going to be very challenging for the Canucks to make playoffs this year.  Calgary and Edmonton are going to be very strong teams.

Getting rid of Bouma today is also a good idea....they have plenty of money right now.
