Rolly Melanson named Devils Goaltender Coach

Recommended Posts

"I want to thank Trevor Linden and the Vancouver Canucks organization for allowing Rollie to join the New Jersey Devils," said Shero. "Rollie is well-respected throughout the League as a teacher and his experience with various goaltenders will be very beneficial. Additionally, I have enjoyed working with Chris the past two years and I am very happy that he will remain with the organization. His knowledge and passion will help us continue to grow as a team."

Our goalies didn't seem too bad with Cloutier as coach.

True that.

You can say what you want about Cloutier as a player, but he's a pretty decent coach. Sometimes it just works out that way.

Scotty Bowman was a centre until he got a fractured skull. Coaching and Management didn't seem to be a problem with him. :)

A great example! Teams seem to like former stars stepping into management positions and some of em go on to coaching. But look at how coaching turned out for the highest scoring player of all. Sometimes it's the guys who struggle a bit more, don't make it quite as far/play as long, ect that make the best coaches. Just one of those weird things.

you mean, a pretty good goalie that got shat on by an absolutely dumb and ridiculous fanbase?

you have a fairly selective memory me thinks

was not a stand out playoff goalie

and seemed to have mental lapses too often that led to weak goals

he wore out his welcome in LA pretty quickly after he left the canucks

this really is not all on the fan base

clouts contributed to this perception

I would guess that Schneids would have been lobbying hard for this move.

Good for Rollie as he gets an NHL gig and stays close to his mom.

That was the most important part and is also why this is the right move by our organization as well.

see, I say "pretty good goalie" and you recoil and say he didn't "stand out". Vancouver fans are just weird.

And never mind that the team, by design, sacrificed defense for offense. Never mind that the west coast express had a TERRIBLE plus minus. Its all Cloutier. Because when in doubt, blame the goalie. If he's not Patrick Roy in his prime, he's crap.

Even arguably the best player of all time didn't make him a good coach (Gretzky).  Cloutier gets alot of grief (some of it deserved true) but he put up some solid numbers behind a team that didn't exactly pay that much attention to strong defensive play.  I like the job Cloutier is doing so far (not to dismiss the fact I'd prefer to have Melanson even just as a consultant).

Uhmmm....Cloutier was a solid 1B but was not in fact what you'd call a good goalie.  Howard esque.  Smith esque.  The guy was an aberage starting goal tender but was certainly not "good"
