During this mostly static portion of the "5th season," I thought I would pose a somewhat difficult question. It is dependent on when and if the Canucks reach the Stanley Cup Final in the future. Considering the 2011 riot, and to an extent the 1994 riot, what are your guys' views on having outdoor viewings (i.e. big screens in public venues) and major public gatherings to watch the SCF, if that opportunity comes knocking again?

Note: I hope this question doesn't raise too much vitriol from the fanbase. I am sincerely curious on the general consensus of the matter.

I never understood the outdoor viewing. If I'm not at the game, I want to watch it intensely on TV,  not outside over the loud bandwagoners and drunks.

I find the same mostly. I've been to a couple games and i love the environment, but the public broadcast has a lot of advantages that IRL viewing doesn't offer.

I remember that Vancouver had said that mass public celebrations would be banned in Vancouver during 2012. And yet, Surrey had intended to repeat the outdoor events if the Canucks had again advanced to the finals in 2012. I personally don't see a problem with outdoor viewing. We saw the aftermath of the 2011 Vancouver Riot, and there were obvious changes that should have been made to alter the outcome. Prior to Game 7, there was no problem with massive public viewings, and that includes the 2010 Winer Olympics. The Vancouver Police were simply unprepared to face a riot after many successful uneventful public viewings in Downtown.

There is no reason not to allow it. To punish the city and the fan base because of the actions of a few idiots does not make sense.

What occurred in 2011 could have happened in any other city had they been just as unprepared. Hopefully the consequences of 2011 (jail time for the offenders, fines etc) will also deter people from behaving this way. Regardless though you cannot expect drunken idiots to not behave like drunken idiots and disregard consequences. But these types exist in every city and every fan base.

There is nothing in the Vancouver waters that produces such behavior and anyone who suggests this behavior is more prevalent among Canucks fans is likely a troll or a moron. Everyone from city officials, to the police as well as the fan base needs to be vigilant and cooperate with one another to ensure safety and security at such events.

They just need a better venue for it.  Some open space but with limited corridors to enter/exit, thus cops can monitor who are coming in/out.

Back in 2011, there are some parts where police are checking bags and stuff... yet 100 meters further down the fences are completely open and people are just moving unhindered.  It's like locking your front door, but leaving the ground floor windows all open.

More cops and with zero tolerance on any rowdy behaviour.  You're caught being drunk and/or trying to start something, you'll be thrown in jail and massively fined.

It was the (partially) municipality's fault that 2011 happened. It would be stupid if they preventing such things from happening this time around.

Who knew that giving 100,000 people alcohol and letting them gather was a bad idea?
