As a Metro Division team, Columbus fully endorses this trade. ::D

That said, both teams did well, considering what they were looking for.

just give up. Just look at that F***ing D. Top 2 on every team

That’s cap hell in the offseason though. Almost half the team has retained salary for this season only. I smell a fire sale.

Thanks commissioner MM for processing.

This was honestly a really hard trade to make. I've been talking to @SidneyRaymond for a couple months about a deal like this but wanted to wait to see if my team would be able to get healthy and heat up again. I posted in December that I'd give this group one more month to redeem themselves before pulling the trigger on a deal that would almost certainly hurt our 2018 playoff aspirations. In the last 30 days we're among the bottom 5 teams in fantasy points per game. That simply isn't going to cut it with NYR and CBJ both loading up. Add in the fact that Talbot and the Oilers aren't making the playoffs this year, I didn't feel that this team had enough firepower to beat any of the top teams in the Metro in the first round. After round 1, if the right teams made it through I could envision doing some damage but I simply did not have the depth to compete. I'd have to sell low on all my underperforming non playoff assets to load up and even have a chance.

The news coming out today that Shattenkirk is joining Kreider on IR and out indefinitely makes it a bit easier to accept this move. That's another two potential playoff players gone, which could finally push the real life Rangers to sell meaning Miller won't be useful in the playoffs either. It just has not been my year in terms of injuries and a ton of players being on bubble teams. Since Eaves got injured at the start of the season, other key players like Kreider, Wennberg, Talbot, Byfuglien, Letang, Shattenkirk, Couture, etc. have been rotating in and out of the lineup.

I'd like to thank Logan, Dustin, Alec, Patrick, Riley, and James for their time in Pittsburgh. Logan and Patrick were guys I drafted in the inaugural draft and it is with a heavy heart that I move them away to a real contender. Dustin and Alec have proved to be really great trade acquisitions the last two years and have been two of the best on my team every year of their time in Pittsburgh. Riley has been a pleasant surprise as a free agent signing, breaking out this season on one of the most dangerous third lines in the NHL with Backes and Heinen. He's been producing at 4+fp/g the last 1.5 months and I believe he can keep it up for the rest of the year.

The key here was to get younger and to get cap relief. As all the GMs who have been messaging me about playoff assets the last month know, my priority was to get younger players who are producing at similar rates. A "quality for quality" deal essentially. I'm not looking to destroy what has been built up here in Pittsburgh and have never been too comfortable with making a quality for quantity type deal. While the cap going both ways remains the same for 2017/18, I save a ton of cap next season. Very excited to enter the offseason with a lot of cap flexibility (for the first time) to resign my current RFAs/UFAs and perhaps be active in the free agent market.

To my Metro division rivals, I'm sure this trade is a nice new years surprise haha. I was likely already out of the race even before injuries hit as almost every single player on my team has taken a step back from last season. This trade here is the nail in the coffin. I will be back next year though and hopefully after a long offseason of rest the Penguins will be ready to take the next step.

Lastly, apologies if I'm upsetting anyone in the Pacific division! I may gotten an angry message or two since the trade has been posted...

Updated lineup:

Huberdeau – Wennberg – Mantha

Landeskog – Schmaltz – Miller

Kreider* – Iafallo – Wingels

Killorn – Prince* – Cousins

Larsson

Theodore – Letang

Nurse – Shattenkirk*

Moore – Chorney

Kukan

Talbot

Neuvirth

* means the player is currently injured

You Don’t Train for 2nd Place
by Darren Porkloin, Columbus Dispatch

186463980.jpg

Last night, the once unthinkable – and more recently, inevitable – happened…the New York Rangers passed the Columbus Blue Jackets in the standings. And they did it in convincing fashion, with a 76.5-point night.

How did this happen? Some people say injuries are not an excuse – but those people are a****les. With Mark Scheifele, Victor Hedman, Michael Frolik, and Victor Arvidsson all on the shelf, there’s only so much a team can do. We don’t want to whine too much though, because the divisional rival in Pittsburgh (the team we were more worried about earlier in the season) has had it even worse. And unlike a few of their players, all our guys are expected back during the season.

So what are GMs D-Money and Monty going to do about this? Word is…not much. Once healthy, the team is still going to be in good shape for the post-season. And that is really when it is going to count. That is when 2nd place is not acceptable. The goal always has – and continues to be – Lord Stanley.

And besides...with today’s trade exodus in Pittsburgh, perhaps they would be the preferred 1st round opponent anyways?

The Rangers sure are rolling - and doing better than I could have asked.

A team can mope about my hitman their injuries, or they can overcome them like a certain team did with Ellis on IR for half a year (especially since now is the least impactful time to get injuries with bye weeks and all) ;)

I do expect a competitive run to the playoffs, with us being separated by just a few points when it's all said an done. Regardless of playoff opponent, I'm still not comfortable facing anyone from the Metro, even after Pittsburgh's trade.

Not particularly shopping him, but Colorado will listen to offers on Brandon Saad. He's only 25 so he certainly could be part of out future, but with little else left to tinker with on the NHL roster, why not see what's out there. Open to retaining on his contract too

Got lots of free time today. So I wanna talk trades

Bobby Ryan (Top 6 F) - Asking price... Mid 6 F, 2nd/prospect

Pat Maroon (Mid 6 F) - Asking price... Good prospects, top 6 playoff F

These are my 3 biggest trade assets atm. Or at least guys I'm looking to deal. All putting up great numbers.

Other players I am listening on are - Alex Steen, Nikolay Goldobin, Matt Hunwick... don't really have prices for them yet as I'm not sure what id want.

Goligoski dealt.

1st rounder for a UFA on a bad team?

I liked some of the other trades, but not this one.

Just because someone has 1st rounder attached to their name doesn’t mean they’re a star.  And this one doesn’t play for a very good team either.

I need players that play games on my roster desperately.  And I got one that produces.  Yes he’s declining and yes he needs a new contract, but offensive dmen dont grow on trees.

This organization is happy to add Alex Goligoski, and believe that he’s an undervalued asset, much like a lot of my targets, but thanks for your opinion.

if anyone else wants to deal me a 3.7 ppg player for a mediocre junior player, hit me up.

*Pick will be sent to Florida (from the New Jersey Devils) if van Reimsdyk is dealt to a non-playoff team prior to the end of the regular season.

Thank you for the trade @inane and MM for carrying out the transaction.    We welcome high second round picked Al Texier to complete our full forward line of top CBJ prospects. We bid adieu to JVR following his brief stay with the Blackhawks, and wish him a deep playoff run with his Puck cup contending team.
