Want to thank @Tigs for very smooth negotiations as always. And to @Master Mind for a quick process.

We are sorry to see Zach go. As a key part to our Kopitar deal, we had high hopes for him. But it's clear his injury has been a damper to his season. We wish him all the luck in Washington.

We would like to welcome Josh, Colin and Casey to the Vancouver Canucks. Though not on playoff teams or likley playoff teams, this gives us depth and cap flexibility. With our unexpected acquisition of Galchenyuk we needed to clear space. This not only does that now, but also looking to the future as well. These guys can also be used as trade chips down the line.

With all that said we have quite the plethora of Dmen. Vancouver is always open for business and we will look to ship a Dman or 2 out I'm the near future.

What the hell happened to Backstrom and Oshie

Also Kempe

That's an excellent question. I paid a pretty penny to get Oshie and he hasn't scored at all, or even got shots on net.

Im guessing Backstrom and Oshie are getting used in a defensive role since their bottom 6 isn't stacked anymore.

Mat Barzal is having himself a week.

On a 6 game point streak.

5 assists in one game.

Disrespectfully undressed McDavid.

Then this,

Didnt score though, what a bum.

Alex Edler once went coast-to-coast, doesn't make him Bobby Orr.

So...Roland McKeown, aka the guy the Canucks could have had at #50 had they not traded the pick for Linden 'The Phantom Midget' Vey, made his NHL debut this week and picked up his first two assists last night. He looks confident and assured, and every inch the player that was ranked much higher than 50 but dropped during the draft.

Canucks fans didn't like the trade at the time, disliked it even more as we sat through Vey's turgidness, and now with more time and further hindsight, it looks like a very poor trade indeed.

Point is - why aren't we hearing more about this? In an age where Gudbranson, Sutter, Gagner and co get pulled apart for every minor mistake on the ice, why has this not been done to death either?

I think partially because you have no idea who your team would have picked there.  Canucks could have picked McKeown or Montour with that pick or.....Maxim Letunov or Ryan Donato, whoever those guys are. Like the trade turns out bad in hindsight, but there's nothing inherently wrong about trading a late 2nd round draft pick for a player. The real view of that trade is that the Canucks traded a pick that probably won't pan out for a prospect that probably won't pan out - only the canes made a good pick.

I think we could trust Benning to make a solid selection at #50 with his draft record; he selected Tryamkin and Forsling after #50 in that draft after all.

Vey was considered very good at the time, and was expected to develop on the 4th line. One problem - Horvat blew away expectations. If Horvat had been sent back, Vey could have reasonably been in our middle 6 right now, or at least a middle 6 player somewhere in the NHL. But unlike Travis Green, Willie D didn’t play players to their strengths, managing to overuse and underutilize him at the same time. It was a bad trade in hindsight, but there definitely was reasoning for it.

It’s also the same reason why Yannick Weber didn’t work out the year after he led our team in scoring: the rise of Ben Hutton. Also Weber is just not that good.

Donato and Letunov are college players, both in year 3. You probably haven't heard the last of them.

L.A. made the pick. And then they traded him and a 1st round pick (ended up being Julien Gauthier) to rent Andrej Sekera, who then promptly got injured, and the Kings missed the playoffs entirely.

...So - you think trading a late 2nd to gamble on Vey is bad?...

I think that's part of the reason people don't talk about how bad the trade turned out, because the end result was much worse for the team we made the trade with. Kind of like the Ballard trade - he sucked for us, but Florida didn't end up with anything useful either. The only team that really benefited in the end was the NY Islanders.

Speaking of Vey, he's currently the leading scorer in the KHL!

He definitely had talent. Who knows, if it weren't for the crazy sideshow of his family problems, maybe he could have been a player. Something like that has to weigh on a guy. Now with a completely fresh start overseas, he's absolutely ripping it up. It might not even be the last we see of him. He may even be a top-6 guy on our Olympic team.

(...and now comes the announcement that @thejazz97 has signed Linden Vey...in 3...2...)
