That's true... but I also see parallel's with Gagner too, though. It's a double edged sword. They're doing a nice PR spin of "we're moving Gagner to the Marlies so he's close to his offseason home!" But also, this keeps Gagner from being the top line centre of Utica -- a role that guys like Gaudette, MacEwen, and Kero can cycle through this season -- players who could become mainstay Canucks (well Gaudette and MacEwen, not Kero) rather than Gagner who, depending on how his AHL season goes this year, could be bought out next summer.

That's the point I was making but your point makes sense too.

And another way to think about it. Benning is assigning Gagner to his farm team's division rival, the defending Calder Cup champion and the team that knocked the Comets out of the playoffs. How would it look if he scores the playoff clinching goal ending the Comets season this year and not allowing some of the players you mentioned the experience of a long playoff run.

Sam Gagner has 3.1 million reasons to be in Utica providing leadership to these kids that will eventually be part of the Canucks future. Not playing against them.

Does Dim Jim have any clue that the Comets have been without a playmaking center for the last 2 seasons??????

JB is far from dim. The whole point of the Comets is to develop our prospects. Gags would just be pushing someone like Gaudette down a line. It also continues the trend of JB being a decent even in a bad situation. Just like with Burr and Hanson. he asked them where they would prefer to go, and did his best to make that happen.

Jb is showing potential players down the line he might be interested in, that he is a stand-up guy. It also showcases gags for a trade, without taking playing time away from our guys in Utica. Looking back now. Its funny how much he was ripped in the press for the return he got on Vaneck and holm. Yet both made the team this year. Far from dim is Jim cheers

They did it out of respect to Gagner who is from the Toronto area.

People often tend to forget that players talk, and so do agents. When it comes to negotiating with Gagner's agent in the future, they'll remember that the Canucks treated him with respect. That goes a long ways.

Who knows, maybe toronto will end up liking him and trade for him. Decent depth C/W for a contender if retained salary.

Also something people are overlooking. He is right in the Leafs backyard now and is a hometown kid. If injuries happen, or they can't work something out with Nylander, you better believe they'll be looking at scoring depth guys like Gagner.

Elliotte Friedman on sportsnet 650 also said besides the family reason, Toronto Marlies are one of the more popular scouting areas in the AHL, thus could open up opportunity for him if a team sees him and likes him.

Friedman also spoke upon how a few agents and players reached out to him to voice their displeasure with this move of the Canucks waiving Gags.  Apparently was a very popular person around the league.

I think Kyle Dubas has a better understanding of how to develop prospects in the AHL in a winning environment than Jim Benning. After all he just graduated 6 players from a Calder Cup winning team.  How many players did the Comets graduate from last year...the year before that?

Dubas seems to find ways to bring in solid vets without stunting the growth of his prospects.  The most ironic thing about the Gagner deal is that Laurence Gilman is now the GM of the Marlies. Benning gets to hand off his $3.1M horrible contract to the guy he fired for free.  Dim Jim strikes again.

So where are all these "prospects" Jim has developed over the past 5 seasons????  I've never seen a more screwed up franchise in my life...  Leaves his so called prospects in the AHL without a #1 center for two seasons, and then gives one away to a division rival and said AHL team still lacks a #1center.... Yeah you got us on that one... He's Brilliant!!!!!!

You do realize our prospect pool has been voted in the top three by pretty much all the major pundits. They are prospects so you wont find them in the lineup yet. Thus called prospects.

hmmm.. not sure that's all Dubas

all those years that Toronto was missing the playoffs, filling the cupboards with draft picks, Gillis was selling off our future. not all that surprising they can graduate more players than the comets

So having a veteran center to anchor all those prospect wingers is a bad thing?  The marlies did exactly that last year with Ben Smith centering their top line.  Who would Gagner take ice time from?? Hamilton and Woods??? The Comets have spent the last two seasons scrambling for anyone that can win a faceoff.....

JB did the right thing for a veteran player. Its about the bigger picture.
