Sam Bennett may head overseas to stay in shape as he awaits a new contract with the Calgary Flames, according to TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger.

As Dreger reports, there remains a 'sizable gap' in contract talks between the Flames and the 21-year-old restricted free agent.

Bennett scored 13 goals and added 13 assists in 81 games with the Flames last season. He posted two goals in the team's four playoff games.

The 2014 first-round pick's numbers dipped last season from the 18 goals and 36 points he posted in 77 games as a rookie during the 2015-16 season.

The Flames have just over $7 million in cap space remaining, according to CapFriendly, with only Bennett left to sign.

Part of me wonders if Bennett is trying to get himself traded.

On a lot of teams in this league, Sam is a top-6 player, who would get lots of opportunities to work through his struggles and earn a big contract. But with the emergence of Tkachuk, and the surprisingly good fit of Ferland on the top line, the Flames have their top-6 pretty much set. And unless Lazar snaps out of it, or Foo, Jankowski, Pribyl, Shinkaruk, and/or Poirier make the jump and succeed, they don't have a lot of options for quality linemates for Bennett in their bottom-6.

I could see him looking at a short, cheap bridge contract in Calgary as though it were virtually a guarantee of another short, cheap bridge contract next time around.

26 points in a contract year for a soft player?  How much leverage does he think he has?  He needs to put together a real solid season this year and next to be paid like a top 5 draft pick.

Bennett is not soft.  He actually plays a hard game.  He just might be too small and weak for the style he needs to play to be effective.
