4 hat tricks through 2 nights

this has got to be somewhat noteworthy.

wednesday night we had connor mcdavid and wayne simmonds notching 3 goals apiece, and then last night both alex ovechkin and brandon saad did the same.

what do you guys think? will the league settle down and migrate back to average scoring rates, or will new rules and a faster game mean we see a return of 1980's level scoring this year?

Between new emphasis on speed and transition play, and truly elite goaltenders are few and far between, I'd say the pendulum has swung into the offensive side of the ledger.

For now.

Some coach will create a new defensive scheme. I guess I'm old school I've seen some awesome 2-1 games, with lots of up and down play, and chances on both ends.

I've seen some blowouts that were one sided, and were as boring as hell.

players like Matthews, McDavid are just doing their thing ,I don't think theres any intention of running the score their just doing their thing , McDavid drives to the net ,moves and thinks so fast ,hard to defend against it.  although virtanan seems to know how to neutralize mcD, like to see some of that tomoro nite

I was watching some of that Chicago-Pittsburgh game, and checking out other games as well. After the score hit 5-0, it was probably the most boring game of the night. I was mostly just watching to view the train wreck.

The Arizona-Anaheim game was much better hockey.

Not sure if things will settle down completely to the average, but it usually takes a little bit of time for defensive systems to become established.

This, it's the first few games of the regular season. It'll take a bit of time for the regulars to get into a groove and get their systems and whatnot down tight.

It's a lot of goals though, it'd be fun this season featured more scoring without the NHL mucking around.

This. I'd rather watch a 1-0 or 2-1 game where there are tons of scoring chances but the goalies stand on their heads than a 7-6 game where it seems every shot is going in.

Those two 1-0 games in the 2011 SCF were the best games I've ever seen in terms of sheer enjoyment.

Blow outs aren't fun hockey to watch and will just result in dirty penalties being taken especially now that there is no one enforcing "the code" anymore. Aaaaand the pendulum swings.

If you always follow the trend set by the previous SCC you will always be following. Never winning. As offensive specialists become premium in the "new NHL" we should quietly amass  discounted defensive specialists to work with Malhotra. As shutting down the high powered offensive teams and beating them with depth is pretty much our only hope.

Did that change not go into effect last season? I am trying to look it up, from what I can read it went into effect mid season.

The pants did. Thought they were shrinking the pads this year...?

Maybe just imagined it / hoped.

They were going to decrease the size of the chest protector as well, but that change won't be for at least another year as well.
