After a convincing 6-0 loss last night, Calgary hit the road for Vancouver….

But never fear, 103 year old Jagr’s here…..

22447513_483222545385488_1036597737_n.jp

He’s had over 500 teammates in his 63 year career, many of whom are already in the HHOF, and some who have kids now playing in the league (who likely call him Gramps?).   He is a legend, but will his walker be allowed on the ice?   (Note:  he really IS a legend)

On his return to the game this week:

Quote

“It’s not going to be very good,” said Jagr, mere hours before his remarkable return to the NHL Wednesday night..."But hopefully, (after playing) some games, it’ll be better.”

True to his word, Jagr was pedestrian....

Post-game Travis Green had no new information and with the Canucks having a day off on Friday, there was no update on his status.

If he can’t play, it seems most likely Derrick Pouliot will draw in for his first game with the Canucks.

He was added a week and a half ago on the eve of the regular season in exchange for Andrey Pedan and a fourth round draft pick.

Green coached him in junior, when Pouliot’s offensive skills were his clear calling card, and Jim Benning is clearly very high on him as well.

But the 23 year old has had his struggles in his own end since first making the leap to the NHL with the Penguins in 2014-15.

If Pouliot does indeed draw in, it seems likely Michael Del Zotto, who soaked up most of Edler’s minutes on Thursday, will be paired with Chris Tanev, while Pouliot could pair up with Erik Gudbranson, who’s been skating with Del Zotto.

That would leave the third pairing of Ben Hutton and Troy Stecher together, and while there were worries in the first two games about the young pairing, they were strongly positive possession players on Thursday, suggesting they may be on the verge of finding a comfort level with each other and would be able to handle more ice time.

The famous flow

At the other end of the ice, one of the most famous hockey hairdos of all time. He’s one of the greatest players too, of course.

Jaromir Jagr has made his first foray north of the border and the team’s he’s joined is a bit of a pundit’s darling even without his savvy game.

He played his first Flames game Wednesday in LA against the Kings.

“I didn’t feel very well,” Jagr told reporters afterwards. “But I expect that. I’m glad it’s behind me, so hopefully next game I feel better.”

He played on a line with Kris Versteeg and 20-year-old Sam Bennett.

The all-time great admitted at 45, it will take some time for his legs to get back in order, but was confident he’ll be up to speed quickly.

Three line rotation

Through three games, Travis Green’s even strength line deployment has been clear. Rotate three lines for the bulk of the ice time, while using a fourth sporadically in the first two periods and hardly at all in the third.

Jake Virtanen has generally found himself parked on the bench in third periods, and on Thursday, so did Loui Eriksson.

Green seems partial to matchups (Brandon Sutter and Derek Dorsett have seen a lot of opposing top lines, with mixed results) and experienced hands (the Sedins and Thomas Vanek are looking to actually being a thing).

Will this be an ongoing pattern? Or just a coach sorting out his options, especially given he’s acknowledged he has no true first line?

Markstrom again?

On Thursday, we speculated Anders Nilsson might get his first start, but Green when with the guy who seems to already be his number one,  Jacob Markstrom.

Markstrom has played well in the first three games, though there have been hiccups here and there.

His next start will be his 100th in the NHL — and he’s yet to record a shutout.

He’s also relieved a baker’s dozen worth of games, meaning, as noted by Greg Balloch of InGoal Magazine, the Big Swede’s closing in on Pokey Reddick’s 132 appearances without a shutout in the NHL.

In the opposing crease, the Flames played Friday night and lost to the Senators 6-0. Old friend Eddie Lack mopped up after starter Mike Smith was chased early in the third and you wonder if the former Canuck — he was in Carolina the last two years — will get the start tonight

Welcome to the lamest GDT ever.  Head in a bucket, I'd appreciate any updates that are posted as I'm extremely under the weather and just can't even.  Is it food poisoning, or the Flames are in town?

Flames won't be in a kind in friendly mood after Ottawa embarrassed them

its gonna be a tough game and Vancouver just doesn't have the personnel to handle those games.

7-1 flames.

Vans d has been making far to many mistakes and I can count the tape to tape passes made this season on one hand.

@debluvsburrowsGreat job on the GDT love the bus.

Another creative GDT

Can't believe Ottawa walked all over the Flames last night - they're gonna come into our arena p'd off

Maybe LE will jump out of the box tonight with all the media attention

Maybe the Sedins will have a come back night - they actually looked pretty good Thursday I thought

Maybe this is the night  the Bo/Baer/Boesser line  light up the night

Maybe tonight Jake scores his 1st goal of the season

And maybe not - but there is always hope

Go Canucks Go

Loui Eriksson scores three goals on his own net, angering Bo Horvat who proceeds to jump him and beat him to a pulp. The refs, perplexed by what to do, give Eriksson and Horvat both 5 minute majors allowing Calgary to play 5 on 3 against the Canucks for 25% of the second period. During this penalty kill, Boeser blocks 10 shots and is out for the season with 8 broken bones. Stecher fires 3 slapshots directly into his own teammates, injuring the entire Sutter line.

Final score 18-1 for Calgary.

Lone Canuck goal scored by Travis Green after going rogue and suiting up for the Canucks to compensate for all the injuries.
