The real Jan broke her hip! ( Recovery MODE)

I am so bummed out, my wife Jan......the crazy women who loves hockey so much, broke her hip on Friday. I am so sad for her! tripped on here stupid purse strap on Friday, getting out of the car....so frigging easy to do something like that......now major surgery, new ball on the end of her fibula, and a crack in her pelvic bone....2 to 4 months recovery, best case scenario........

I am sorry honey! Very sad for you! :(

Recovery Mode

Well after 8 days in the hospital, having her hop socket wired because of a break and the ball at the top of the Femur replaced, Jan is finally home! Albeit, somewhat stationary at first, but she is moving around with a walker, and slowly!......she is not liking this at all!

Now, I am not trying to lecture anyone, and but it is important to keep ones strength up by exercising....why? Because as you get older (especially women) you may suffer from age related deceases......such as osteoporosis (Jan), and you will need that strength for the recovery....trust me on this! Ok, it sounds like a lecture, but honestly.....Jan is not a physical women and doesn't do any weight bearing exercises (for bone density)........and this could have been an entirely different story had Jan had the strength to catch herself........but that didn't happen!

I honestly think the younger generation gets this better than us older generation........stay on it! You guys rock!

So as Jan and I wait for the NJ -Van game.........it just occurred to me to let you know my retirement isn't going quite as planned! But the dog and I are getting reacquainted and Jan is starting to get sick of my cooking already....even though it is better than hospital food.......barely!

We are looking at 2 to 4 months of therapy and 6 months until fully recovered.........not as long for me! lol..........Jan says thanks for the well wishes!

Very sorry to hear, all the best in a speedy recovery.

I'm actually going through a somewhat similar scenario, my wife just had back surgery with a 2-3 month recovery.

We just straight up couldn't do it right now without the help and care of dear family members and friends. If you've got them, feel blessed and lean on them.

Sorry to hear that, JIHN. Nearing 50, the Missus & I are getting into that aches & pains stage(we could run a marathon together, back in the day).

You get old & soft..where you feel the spouse's setbacks more than yer own. GL to you & yours...

Isn't your wife Asian? She should have at least another twenty years before she starts aging.

Thanks everyone.......sorry for feeling sorry for myself........I feel so bad for my wife........she is a cute, lite weigh women, that doesn't have a lot of meat on her bones, I am worried for her. He has been fighting Osteoporosis for years, and I fear this is only the start.( and she is still young)

On a lighter note, she is the most ferrous Canuck fan you will ever meet, and her color commentary is beyond reproach......she is not a band wagoner! Her yelling at the refs is legendary in our house and the catalyst behind my CDC name.

Speed recovery to the real Jan.

Just out of curiosity, has she taken bone density medication at all?  I ask because my parents had osteo, but both took these weekly bone density pills the size of horse tranquilizers. Neither ever suffered a broken bone and I'm convinced that these pills were the reason.

Good luck.

Sorry to hear that, it can happen so easily.  Patience for you my friend!  Also, a bit of advice, having gone through two total hip replacements, make sure Jan does all the rehab work as that will set her up for a better recovery.  Make sure she listens to her body, but at the same time she doesn't baby herself.  also with osteo, strength training is always touted as a positive.  I've had some friends who have bone density issues and seem to keep things at bay through aggressive exercise.  Getting a good trainer will help to set up a program that would be beneficial.

Good luck!

Wishing Jan a speedy recovery!! Hopefully our Canucks will give her much to yell at the TV for during recovery! (But only in the best and good ways!)

skategal has some really, really good advice here. Doing ALL the rehab work is key in recovery... too many folks stop when they think they are doing better and unfortunately, it ends up biting them back. It's not a quick trip to recovery but following the doctor's advice and the physiotherapists advice to the letter will get you there much faster! :)
