While I do appreciate that he's a tactical player who likes to play a smart game, it would have been good to see him make life a bit more difficult for the Ducks yesterday, who seemed to feel that they had free reign physically.

Obviously being the larger team overall with much more NHL experience, they'll take advantage of that fact, but to have one of our only comparable players size-wise not set the tone in return was kind of deflating.

I’d say it’s “tactical” and probably from management down for Gudbranson to get his stride and strength again.

It makes sense for player and management to show and see the long term assets of a player,. and not waste a playoff mentality in regular season play.

Realistically, There are approximately 35 regular season games left.. and the long range possibility of 16 after that.

... and I still think it’s Tanev that will be moved,.  He does not get out of the way of hits!

Sure it was his first game back in a while, but Getzlaff skated through him like soft butter to screen Nillsen on one goal.

and on another, Tanev left his zone check to crossover into Del Zottos coverage, only to have the puck go back to Tanev’s original check and score.

AGAIN.  CT may look good in the numbers,. But what he does away from or without the the puck is freakish.

Get something for Tanev while we can!

He could step up and make a big hit or whatever, but what happens when that sparks Anahiem to go all out physically? Does Gudbranson want to face a ton of hits coming his way or does he need to defend those who cannot defend themselves because of what he started? What if Anahiem decided to plaster Stecher or whoever all night? Even if he hadn't recently come back from his injury, he doesn't have the support to play the physical game because the rest of the team cannot back him up.

It's not the game to play when you are outmatched in that aspect. Gudbranson throwing big hits wasn't going to put 6 goals past Miller.

I see the point you're trying to make but I just don't see how Gudbranson can have that mind set. He's a tough dude, he can handle himself. Look at Biega, he's smaller than just about everyone and you can pretty much count on him for a big hit every game. Then there's guys like Dorsett. I've been vocal in my opinion that Dorsett wasn't very intimidating out there but he never let his size or lack of tough teammates dictate the way he played the game. He may not have had his way with a ton of guys in his tenure with us but that never stopped him from showing up and holding opponents accountable for their actions against us. We need Gudbranson to be that guy.

Dorsett's style of play may have unfortunately left him in the condition that forced him to retire early.

Gudbranson is coming off a wrist injury in his contract year. It is not beneficial for himself to injure the wrist again. It is not beneficial to spark a bigger, more physical team to turn it up even more. Before his injury, he has shown that he can play the physical side no problem and handle the big tough guys like Lucic. I think Gudbranson plays more of a hard to play against style (like Methot) rather than the high energy crash and bang style. I never expected him to have a big hit a game or whatever, but rather be available to be called upon to try and defend the big opponents.

Asfor Biega, I'm curious if he can sustain his style of play for an entire season. I imagine he sits in the pressbox, not only because he's the 7th dman, but he probably goes all out when he does get a chance to play and needs the break occasionally.

Playing tough hockey always comes with a risk. But that's how some players earn their pay. In my opinion, EG isn't going to "Chris Tanev" his way to a big contract. No offense to EG but he isn't the shot supressing defensive stud that Tanev is. He just isn't that kind of player. He earns his living by being a player that's hard to play against. A player you don't want to be battling with along the boards or in front of the crease 1 on 1. He's a player that sticks up for his teammates and comes to battle every night. That's his bread and butter. I'm not saying he has to go out there a fight every other night but I just don't see him asserting himself physically like he's capable of and at no point should he be thinking "I'll just let those guys have their way with us because they're tougher than us so why bother". EG's value is at his highest when he's a mean, in your face SOB. There aren't a ton of players around that can go toe toe with him. Defensively however, there are quite a few that can match him. So IMO, he needs to play to his strengths more. That's what's going to get him paid in the end.

I think he has been playing the way you are suggesting he should be. Perhaps he had an off night for the reasons I have mentioned, but he has certainly been a physical force the majority of his time in the lineup. Also, if you're expecting him to play the energy style like Biega, he has never played that way so I don't think it is fair to expect that of him. He's paid to match up against the Lucic types, but when the opposition has several players of that type and you do not have the support to battle them all, it is always going to be an uphill climb and riling up the beast without the arsenal isn't going to make things better.

In games against teams like Anahiem when you cannot match up physically, you try to beat them with speed and make them take bad penalties and punish them on the PP, but without Horvat, Baertschi and Sutter, we lost that dynamic to face them properly. Bad goaltending did not help either.

First bolded is bang on. Biega/Gudbranson are not the same player type nor should they be.

As for the second bolded, he can't. He usually fades after 3'ish games.

Be hard in the corners, in front of the net and play smart hockey. Lay a good hit when it's available. Don't chase them.  Be a nuclear deterrent/fight when it's required (rarely).

I do love how folks slammed the Sbisa contract, but are will to shell out term and bigger dollars to a player who has brought pretty much the same thing to our team.  I would say Sbisa was more physical and was often seen hacking and shoving guys after whistles when they dared get near Miller.  I don’t recall many instances of Gudbranson doing the same.

I regularly heard opposing players and coaches talking about how hard Sbisa was to play against.  Our players raved about him and how much they liked how he made life miserable for other teams.

I am not saying this as a huge Sbisa booster, but it is funny how one guy is the goat and another one gets all the benefit of the doubt.

You can replace the physical element Gudbranson gives for cheaper and no commitment.

if he doesn’t sign for a value contract, there is simply no reason to keep him.

So who would take Sbisa over Gudbranson now? Guddy at 5-6 mil, or Sbisa at his cap friendly 3.6 million?

I would take either at $3.6 million... isn’t Sbisa’s contract up too though?  I take neither above $4.5.  Anywhere between and It is a reasonably hard decision.

Sbisa seems like he has really been a glue piece on their defence and i can see him signing for a raise to something between $4-4.5.

Yeah. Sbisa's been doing himself some good in Vegas. I'm happy for him. He got so much flack during his time here.

Gudbranson, I get the sense will be moved. I'm not sure he settles for a "value contract" - that doesn't do him any favours financially. All a value contract does is save the club some money. I think he's gone. IF he's traded to Toronto, I think Benning will probably get Kasperi Kapanen in return. He's not having a great season, it's okay, but he may or may not break out next year or the year after. He is 22 after all. Two years time and he's 24, and if he doesn't show anything at that point, might be another decent bottom six player in the league. a dime a dozen kind of player. Easily replaceable.

Looking at stats all the way back to junior and never seeing a glimpse of anything significant is certainly a good way to look at a player....

I am assuming you are one of the guys who said to ignore the fact Sbisa had never been a plus player in his entire NHL career (while on excellent teams)... and that he would be our future?

Thankfully we don't have a GM that evaluates players based on plus/minus.

As someone who follows the Panthers as closely (more actually) than I follow the Canucks, your evaluation is heavily skewed.   The loss of Gudbranson’s physicality was noticed in 2016-17 in many ways/shapes/forms for us. The Cats weren’t playing well in the defensive zone and we were allowing a lot of soft goals. The team also had the defensive wall fall quickly in so many games.   No push back whatsoever and the progress some of the other young D had made seemingly vanished without Erik there to solidify things.

Why on earth do you think Dale Tallon's seemingly first move when reinstated as the GM was to try and get him back?!

Aside from that one year, where Luongo played lights out. The Panthers were NEVER that great of a defensive team. They sat near the bottom of league in goal differential, since 2009.

I actually said clearly right in my post I wasn’t a Sbisa booster so not sure what your point was.  I have also made it abundantly clear that Gudbranson isn’t worth a big price tag.

Glad you have your panties in a knot so much about me that you searched posts way back that confirm that.  Did you neglect to include the posts where I said Vegas would be stupid not to take him when the prevailing CDC wisdom was that they would take Gaunce instead?  Guess those don’t fit your invented narrative.

I also didn’t say that’s Gudbranson never stood up for team mates, another instance of you and your straw man arguments and lack of reading comprehension.

I said he doesn’t hack and shove guys after the whistles like Sbisa did all the time.

He doesn’t, no one on this team does.  We are not an unpleasant team to make play against.

I had high hopes for Gudbranson  when he came and had pretty much decided he would be one of my favorite players.  I was expecting a modern version of Willie Mitchell.  It didn’t materialize for many reasons.

Go ahead, rub it in.   I am more than acutely aware of the Cat's misfortunes but also know that Guddy was a stud on the blueline and is missed sorely.

You're not sure what my point was?  "I do love how folks slammed the Sbisa contract" - and you don't see the multiple layers of irony in the fact that not only were you one of those people, but you're back to offer an equally weak prejudgement of Gudbranson.

Who were the people you're referring to - that made a 'goat' of Sbisa - and give Gudbranson 'all the benefit of the doubt'?

The bottom bolded part is more "cool story."

He's 25, he's played 57 games here, and you've written a (one phrase) history of Gudbranson.

I will type more slowly for you.

Go and try moving your lips when you re-read my post, it might help.  I did not mock people who didn't like the Sbisa contract.  I mocked the people who hated his contract AND want to pay a high price with term for Gudbranson who plays a similar role.  It is the logical disconnect between holding both positions simultaneously.  You just bolding one part of a sentence and ignoring the second half is the silly part.

I didn't like the Sbisa contract, and wouldn't like a big Gudbranson contract.  An entirely consistent position.  The element of a 3rd pairing physical guy isn't what you blow your cap on.

With cap ceiling inflation since 2015, $3.6 isn't actually a bad number next season for a 3rd pairing guy anymore.

Fan 590 in Toronto was talking about acquiring Tanev. A good friend of mine at work is close friends with him. They were texting today and he asked if he knew anything.

Benning hasn’t said anything to Tanev or his agent. That doesn’t mean there isn’t talks as the players often don’t know much more than we do.

His agent did say that Toronto offered Bozak and a pick in the summer but Benning didn’t accept the offer. So there is obvious interest from the Toronto side.

Toronto won’t give up Lilijegren, and I think that is who Vancouver would want in return. A deal probably won’t happen. Toronto fans think Gudbranson was a huge over payment for Vancouver and don’t think he is worth much. I hope we do trade Gudbranson there for like Kapanen & a 2nd so they all lose it haha.
