A little premature to call it season ending just yet. I'll reserve judgement until he sees the specialist.

jeopardizing long term health is not very smart.

more and more pro athletes are retiring earlier with injury issues.  medical knowledge about long term health - re injuries is much more prevalent today.

Look at all the NFL players calling it quits.

Not worth 50 years of living in pain ..... just to squeeze out another few years of being a pro.  Certainly if your battling spinal or brain injury issues....

DD has nothing left to prove.  He was a real warrior.

I don't want to see him live the rest of his life in pain.

Do the smart DD and call it a day.  He had a very solid NHL career.

Never such an easy decision when you're the one being asked to give up something you love and have been doing your whole life.   Hopefully he's able tor recover and not have the decision made for him.

Good luck to Dorse in his recovery.  He did have what most considered to be potentially career-ending surgery, so it isn't a surprise that his back is easier to re-injure.  I am glad that everyone involved agreed it was best for him to go back to Vancouver and tend to it.

He really does being some much needed physicality to our team.  Hope Guddy can step up in that regard cuz he isn't doing much else.

Dorsett is a very important player for the Canucks. I have been surprised and impressed by his play this season. He said that his surgery was not going to stop him from playing an aggressive, physical game, and he meant it. In addition to being a tough guy and playing a physical game he has played solid defence and has put the puck in the net at an impressive rate.

That said, the recurrence of symptoms is a big negative. One issue is that even if he can manage on a day to day basis now, it is quite possible that long run damage is occurring.

On the related issue of NHL tough guys who suffer long run mental health problems, this article in the NY Times about former NHL tough guy Stephen Peat (from BC) is worth reading. Warning: this is NOT a "feel good" story. https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2017/11/21/sports/hockey/stephen-peat-concussions.html?hp&action=click&pgtype=Homepage&clickSource=story-heading&module=photo-spot-region&region=top-news&WT.nav=top-news&_r=0

The boy only knows how to play one way...the hard way. And he is damn good at it.

If Dorsett does return, he should totally give up on the staged fights. If someone is asking you at a face-off, it is staged and not actually protecting anyone. Too many of those in his career as it is!

It's not protecting anybody regardless of when or where it happens.

All my best wishes to Derek... lets hope this is nothing serious.

He deserves the respect of all Vancouver fans... he plays with his heart on his sleeve... always gives 100%, there is only one gear... maximum.

Get well soon Derek!!

Do fans even understand what Dorsett puts at risk every time he fights? IMO many do not. It is just not the 20 second fight. It can be his season, his career and his post career health. Wish him well!
