I have never really understood some of the serious Edler hate - yes he makes mistakes - yes  somedays he looks un interested - yes he  breaks a lot od sticks - yes he appears to want be a goalie .................yada yada - but damn the man can log a lot of minutes and for the most part I  think he plays  very well

Congrats on the milestone Eagle

Not sure he's headed for the ROH, but I still get a bad taste in my mouth when I see fans constantly ragging on a guy who's given us service for over 10 seasons. We should be celebrating him, not insulting such a veteran.

This exactly. It's honestly sickening...

I remember when fans were on Juice after his two freak injuries... same thing was starting to happen with Burr. We all know how it was for Luongo... Some Canucks fans are sick.

So I know that I'm gonna get some hate for pointing this out, since Edler's become our new Mason Raymond/Keith Ballard, but Alexander has now played 700 NHL games. That puts him in ninth place for most games played as a Canuck, and he is second among defensemen, only trailing his mentor Mattias Öhlund. I think Alex get way too much hate here on CDC, sure, he isn't the "tier below Norris"-d-man he once was but he's still a serviceable defenseman. The 3 on 3 line with him and the Sedins gave me crazy amounts of 2011 vibes last night. Congrats Alex, you're headed straight for the Ring of Honor!  edlersedins.jpg

Edit: Also, the top nine in games played consists of five Swedes (four of whom have played for MODO) and four Canadians. Vancouver really is the Canadian Örnsköldsvik!

Harold Snepsts played more games as a Canuck than both of them.

Stecher gives a lot of effort like Biega, but offensively outside of a couple of good rushes in his career he has been underwhelming so far.  I know that 300-400 mark is when we really should expect to know what kind of player he is going to be, but in my mind Biega is the better player.  I am surprised Biega doesn't get more minutes.

Edler was excellent against NYR.  He is the most underrated player on this team and has been for a long time.  Interestingly, the coaches Willie, Green and Alain all have seen it a lot differently than fan experts.  There isn't a single thing that Stecher does better than Edler.  Stecher isn't even fast for a young small player.  He is feisty but Biega is just a better version of him.  Biega gets underrated being undrafted and older than the "window or new core".

Pouliot is miles ahead of Stecher already.  Better skater, excellent passer, patient with the puck.

I've always thought of him as a really good fast skater.

Who was that Devils player he hauled ass and spoiled the break away?

I remember the commentators commenting on his speed and how fast the guy was he caught.

I am not saying he is a bad skater or slow.  I am just saying I would expect a lot more from a small player considering the hype and expectations around him.  I haven't clocked them in practice, but he doesn't appear to be any faster than Hutton, Tanev, Biega or Pouliot.  That's fine, but I would call that average speed; so not fast...

He has a good chance of being #1 in all time games played and points for D-men with the Canucks. I'd say a likely ROH candidate.

Yeah, if he gets there, it could happen. As of now, probably not, but if he passes Ohlund in points and Snepsts in games, there's a decent shot. Barring any extreme injuries or surprise trades, he should make it before his contract ends (June 2019).

He's a frustrating player because he had all the tools to be an effective top 2 - but you guys are likely right, that back injury really slowed him down... his hockey IQ isnt particularily high, but if the canucks EVER had a true #1 defenceman to play with Edler, who knows what he could have accomplished. If we won the cup his name would have been written in stone for this club. One game. :(

I'd say Ehrhoff was pretty close to a true #1 for his two years here. Not coincidentally, those were two of Edler's best years.

Congrats Alex, still one of my favs on the team despite all the hate he gets on here.  I've seen people make the stupid argument that Vey was a good pickup because he played 200+ NHL games and was a 2nd round pick.  Well Elder was a 3rd round pick that's played over 700 games, and was an important player when this team was elite.  He's also remained loyal to the team.  All the haters can suck it.

Must . Say . Something . Nice

There's a lot to like about the second favorite Alex. These moments where he makes a big hit (and hes not called by the refs for another bigman penalty), or actually gets his shot through and scores, because he has a decent shot. His passing can be hard and crisp and accurate, or it could be right onto the stick of an opposing player.  He tends to keep rather than move the puck too many times where he regretfully assumes he can recover the puck once he absorbs the initial hit, (Tanev is the master),.

But mistakes are going to happen to a minute-grinding soldier like Edler. Gotta accept the odds. As are injuries. In an ideal world, his minutes would be knocked down. Edler's first days back from injury, when he's rested up, so to speak, a break from the grind, he shines. His overall game would improve if he'd have less responsibility, less minutes, as other players step in like Del Zotto, Stecher, and Pouliot on the PP and even 5 on 5. Just like the Sedins now, he'd be more effective if his energy is rationed better for the long season.
