Offseason (Discussion)

Hey ya'll,

The way the cards have been stacking against the Canucks on the injury front lately, i think were destined for a top 5 pick.

Heres a couple moves that i think would be smart and not hurt the future of this team in the offseason.

One thing we all can agree on is we need offense from the backend. If we arent able to get our dman in the draft.

We HAVE to offer John Carlson a contract. I say 6.25 over 5 years. That gets us our top pairing right handed dman. Paired with Juolevi for the next 5 seasons.

Next we need more grit in our lineup. I see no better candidate than Ryan Reaves. Hes a decent pk when in a pinch and provides a role this team needs. I say 2 years 2 million per.

With Dorsett gone, Sedins potentially, most likely Edler dealt, Vanek and maybe Tanev in the Summer.

We are going to have ample opportunity to be aggressive in moves. But, we have to be smart for contracts for the kids.

Anyways, what you think?

Nice idea, but what the Canucks will probably do:

- re-sign the Sedins (1 year)

- re-sign Gudbranson

- Trade Vanek and Gagner (TDL)

- Extend Edler's contract

- Pettersson, Dahlen and Juolevi to play a year in Utica

- Probably

- Probably

- Trade Vanek, hold onto Gagne and move him at a later date after he has a better season where we can get a better return for him

- Not a chance

- Dahlen in Utica for sure. Pettersson and Juolevi make the team if they have good camps.

Trade Vanek + Edler at TDL, don't re-sign Sedins, sign Kane and Hansen in July.

Kane, Gagner, Goldobin/Petersson

Eriksson/Granlund, Sutter, Virtanen/Hansen

Granlund/Eriksson, Gaudette, Hansen/Virtanen

Gaunce

Hutton, Tanev

MDZ, Gudbranson

Pouliot, Stecher

Holm, McEeneny

Markstrom, Nilsson

I would resign the Sedins if they find some chemistry with Loui this year. They're on pace for 50 points. I don't see why we wouldn't resign them to be our third line. Gives them one more year and an opportunity to mentor Dahlen and Pettersson.

Trade Guddy. Now that Dorsett is gone it may be the wrong move but I do think we should trade him. Let Pouliot take his spot and Juolevi slide into the line up.

Trade Vanek. If someone wants Gagner why not, but he is a nice depth player.

This will be unpopular but I would extend Edler. Our blue line is really young and I'm a believer of having am accountable guy for the D. He makes mistakes but if you cut his pay a bit he would be nice ideal second or third pairing guy. The guy is a warrior and he obviously loves Vancouver. If he wants an NMC then he might take a big paycut. Otherwise we can trade him later for something nice. Either way, you've got a guy who is still decent and wants to stay. I'd keep him.

I'm all for keeping the young guys in Utica. Partially because I think we owe their fans another cup run, and for that you need young skilled guys, but also because it's important for their development. But it all depends on whether or not Pettersson comes into camp and impresses as a center. He can clearly play in the NHL, but if we take the Shipachev situation as an example, the center position is played differently in Europe. He may need time to adjust. Either way though, there will be some competition between Dahlen, Goldy, Gaudette and Pettersson. Next year is going to be super exciting.

I'd say Vaneks play constitutes a 3rd at minimum. He has definitely shown he has the value of a 2nd round pick, he has more smarts than I thought. Kinda wish Gagner and Vanek switched contracts.

Guddy is worth significantly more than I've seen around at the moment. If Ryan Reeves gets you a late first rounder.. coaches seem to love guys like this. Theres more to it than just on ice play, there's a fear factor, and there is no denying that he is a leader in the room and well-coachable. I see us getting something a bit Superior to the Burrows deal. A Dahlen-esque prospect and a 2nd or 3rd.

Edler is worth a first otherwise there is nothing to discuss.

Edit: we've had a lot of depth this year. Not resigning the Sedins really could decimate our lineup for next year. We absolutely need a couple of NHL Calibre guy on the farm.

That would be amazing, but likely going to stay out east. If I was him I wouldn't re up with the Islanders though

Building issues aside, the Islanders currently have the mist potent offence in the league and have some great pieces in place.  An improved D and better goaltending and they could do some serious damage. Tavares is a loyal guy and most think he wants to stay with the organization

What about Kovalchuk? Less years, probably less money than Kane as well. He could be another sniper for us. Less long term risk.

Only reason i say Carlson, because we ALL know how hard it is to get a point producing right handed dman and we most def need one, unless we somehow get Dahlin ripping it up from the Left Side.

This is the plan I like. Add in Burmistrov on that trade list and swap out Marky for Nilsson. Nilsson is cheaper and has less years on his deal. Teams probably looking for a stop gap goalie would be more attracted to Nilsson.

If the Canucks trade Gudbransen at the TDL or let him walk at the end of the season, I imagine they will try to sign a RHD in free agency. If they can’t get Carlson (or decide he’s not right for the team) I’d like to see us try to sign Bieksa. Yeah he’s older, but could be signed to a short term deal for less than 3 mill per year. Hopefully by the time that contract is up, the Canucks have some young RHD ready to step in to the line up.

Have you seen Bieksa lately?

The Sedins look rejuvenated, like they could still play for a couple more years. I just can't see them leaving unless it's so they don't take up two valuable roster spots. Are they that unselfish? Or do they still have that fire in their bellies? I believe that they'll re-sign for one more year (maybe even two). I also think they keep and re-sign Edler. I know I'd love to see 3-4 more prospects make the team next year, but that's not really realistic. Those players will need time to get up to speed. I can see them getting a few games next year though. Similar to what Goldobin is doing this year. There's also the possibility that Pettersson and Dahlen stay in Sweden next year.

We should target Antoine Roussel as a bottom 6 grinder with grit. Does anyone remember seeing him at the prospects tourney in Penticton years ago? He impressed me way back then and was disappointed we never signed him.

Currently has a 2m cap hit and is 28 years old. I would offer him a similar deal to what we were paying Dorsett. He has decent hands too, scored over 12 goals in each of the last 4 years.
