Problem: Early Goals Received (First 5mins of Game)

I haven't really seen this in any prior season, but what really strikes me so far, 32 games in, is how almost every game i get to watch, it's almost expected that when switching on the TV, we are already 0:1 behind with 5mins into the game. It's a pain and I don't want to break it down to either of our goalies, but I would like to hear your opinions on why you think it's happening this season!?

Out of 32 Games so far, in 13 Games (40% !!) we have received the first goal within the first 5 minutes, that's insane.

yeah true, but this season so far its almost becoming a signature, hence i just checked the numbers, and 40%, means almost every other game, we get scored against at or within the first 5 minutes... o_O

Also wouldn't this be something to be tackled by the coaching staff, especially if its this obvious?

A team full of guys developing, but often playing in roles they aren't quite ready for, or never will be.  This includes both our goalies.  If anything, I'm impressed that Green has the team able to hang in there and compete well when this occurs.  We are still in a rebuild.   Some frustrating aspects are to be expected.

It starts with defense,It is a  very difficult position, one little faulter and you stick out like a sore thumb. This is the position they have chosen and we have to help them as much as possible. It's a team sport were lots of SUPPORT goes a long way.

This is an area I am sad to say is lacking on our team.

Out of our 7 or 8 defense 3 are not even close to what an NHL calibre defense man should be.NO SCORING,NO HITTING,NO PASSING(to the right person at the right time).

If you are a defenseman under 6ft 3in. and not quick with the puck you are in the wrong league.

I am sure it is obvious to Mr. Benning and Mr.Linden that this is an area in which  we desperately need some help .

We constantly have defensemen hurt,(tanev, edler, gudbranson) so to have several on hand is a wise stratagy,we do have some young guys coming but they are not quite ready yet.

also,defense wins championships

.

WE SURE COULD USE A NORRIS TROPHY WINNING DEFENSEMAN ON THIS TEAM.

Oh did I dream that outloud!

I have noticed us giving up a goal or taking a penalty in the first few minutes of most games, not only that I have noticed the first or last minute of periods we either give up a goal, take a penalty, or have a disallowed goal or just play very poorly.

This needs to change if we are going to have any extended success.

The team really needs to crack down early and late in periods.

This has been a problem for a while, even last season, they had problem getting out of gate quickly.  They better figure things out.  I remember that Crawford threw out Cooke, Linden and Naslund out for first shift of every game just for that reason.   Maybe Green need to find a special line made just for opening minute of the game to set the tone then go with their regular lines.

Maybe just use Sutter, Sedin, and Virtenan for that reason as well or even Sutter, Boeser, and Virtenan just for energy opening minute then after that shift, go back to their regular line combo for rest of the game.  Just something to break the monotone of the first few minutes problems.

The early-goals create another problem around here...

NHL teams sit-back on leads.  So, if your team is down early, it's likely that your Corsi is going to be a lot better than it should be (as you are going to be taking most of the shots from that point on) - which mean the fans think your team is a lot better than it actually is.

Last year, we were always down early - and, as a result, our season-ending Corsi wasn't nearly as bad as you'd expect (48.2%).  So, everyone thought we'd be a decent team this year.  'Our Corsi wasn't terrible, it was just bad luck!...'

No.  We are taking tons of early goals - because our team is terrible.  So bad that our opponents have absolutely no trouble scoring on us almost immediately after the puck drops.  Then, they are sitting back and coasting, allowing us to generate a lot of shots and control the play, which makes us look a lot better than we should look, giving us fans a false sense of optimism.

It's not bad-luck or a lack of preparation - we get scored on early all the time because our GM has assembled a team that can't quite compete in the NHL.

You have to be a grinder or a high pay aging free agent signed in summer to get into the lineup of this team. And these guys stay with the team no matter how bad they play. There has to be a reason why there are so many empty seats in home games.

I think our guys are trying to stick handle out of our zone and afraid to ice the puck.

A bad bounce or bad clearance and boom it's in our net.

We have to make the safe play and clear the zone as easily as possible, THEN when we're warmed up we can try for the fancier passing.

When in doubt ice it early in the game.

Wow that stat is insane... 40% of the time in the first 5 minutes just shows one thing... The boys don't have the mental readiness.

If they can address this issue, they're likely cup contenders.

We need better sport psychologist
