If these people actually want to qualify for a mortgage they will need to disclose all of those tips.  They won't be getting any money from a bank if they are simply disclosing their minimum wage.

Self-Employed people have the same issue.  They tend to write off everything but when it comes to borrowing money they get into trouble because they show little income on their tax forms.

Dont feel sorry for people that play the system to not pay their fair share of taxes

Didn't the Ontario government give ample warning about these changes coming this year and next? This seems like a low blow if businesses had time to adjust why not find other ways. This seems like a black eye for the company. They should have just raised the prices of coffees in Ontario to cover this.

I know you're pretty far left but don't small businesses play the system all the time?  Justin Trudeau pretty much said they did.

Its complicated

yes small businesses take risks and create massive emoloyment

yes cdn gov allows them all kinds of sprinkling and tax avoidance

fair or not is the question

should a dairy farm be " hire " family members who in reality dont really work on the farm.   ??? Pay them 50,000.  Per year for work not done ????

tricky

Who the hell is they? I agree with your second sentence as for your third sentence I think reality disagrees with you.

I meant those who believe taxing of tips is 'stupid' should still declare as it is the law and would obviously help them qualify as Harv mentioned. I thought you would get my meaning but I admit I didn't clarify properly.

I was a bartender in a very busy club for years in my 20's. At the urging of my dad who was a realtor, I actually declared my tips( also urged co-workers to do the same) and qualified for my first mortgage when I was 23. I bought DT Van, A one bedroom and den at 152k....I still own it. It has enabled me to buy more properties. I`m very lucky due to my real estate and have plans to retire quite young. This is why I made the statement, I've lived it.

As for my Tim`s dig. I believe my opinion exists in reality and don`t really understand your meaning. Unless you are talking about sales which, again IMO, is not the barometer for quality.

Any way, thanks for you responses and hope you enjoy your coffee.

It's Friday, no coffee tonight.B)

Ya I gathered your point after Harvey explained it more. I know very little about service industry and I wasn't aware tips were taxed seems silly to me. I wasn't insinuating people should hide what they make in tips I just never knew tips were taxed.

Next time I'm in Vancouver I will buy you an incredible double double. ::D

Your dad must be a real cool guy...  B)

Good for you for getting into the market so young, and downtown to boot. You set yourself up for life with that decision.

Taxing tips is actually pretty stupid, that money has already been taxed. I always tip, bars, restaurants, hair cuts, etc and I didn't even know they had to declare tips.

Me paying GST/HST is kind of stupid as my money was already taxed at source by my employer on behalf of the Canadian govt.  Same thing?

I'm not arguing that. I remember Chretien promised to scrap gst I wish he had of. Alberta has no pst, the less taxes the better.

Who wouldn't want lower taxes.

I remembered when Chretien promised to get rid of the GST when running for Prime Minster.  Once he got elected he did not kept his promise.  Sure didn't hurt him as he got elected a couple more times.

I guess some people don't mind paying taxes.  The City of Vancouver raises property taxes every year.  This year it is 4%, way above inflation.  Yet Mayor Robertson keeps getting re-elected.

I have no problem with paying taxes as long i feel that the government services are decent quality.

Too many people in Canada are not paying their fair share of taxes though... that is the problem.

Hopefully  JT and his advisors can get it sorted out so the tax burden is shared equally by all Canadians.

This is what angered me about B.C.

I only lived in Alberta for a bit over 2 years.... but from what i saw  Alberta had much better services for its citizens than BC.

Alberta universities and health care were miles ahead of BC at that time...

Yup I noticed those things as well when I moved here. You know kos it's so much more also, Alberta has way, way more highways, much smoother and snow removal on highways is far better. Winter driving in B.C over the last 20 years is a death trap. I find B.C massively underfunds it's teachers, doctors and nurses which leave kids and patients with poor experiences but who could blame these people when they get so under paid.

All that being said I miss the beaches of the Okanagan all the time and waiting for summer to come always seems to take so long but I do get to spend the summer months there.

Ya and you know like @Warhippy said other places are becoming unaffordable in B.C not just Vancouver.

Sometimes I think if it wasn't for retirees B.C would be the size of Saskatchewan.

And the worst part is B.C has more natural resources than any other province and access to an ocean. It always baffles me when I think about it. Instead of building a prosperous province attracting young people it seems they decided to sell out to the highest foreign bidder.
