In Minnesota he got criticised for giving up and there were some very harsh comments made.

sure looks like he's having a helluva lot of fun playing with Boeser though, and they are clicking.

further to my previous point

The Leafs signed Polak from his PTO this year.

I think you may be referring to when the Leafs traded Spaling and Polak to San Jose for 2 seconds and a cap dump.

. @SportChek Player Alert: Leafs acquire San Jose's 2017 and 2018 2nd Rd. picks and Raffi Torres for Roman Polak and Nick Spaling. #TMLtalk

Yeah I got my years mixed up.  Thanks for the clarification.

Keep Vanek, and trade Loui?

If that was possible that would be an easy yes. I would be fine having Vanek on 2 year deal, if we could move out Eriksson, which is probably not impossible but unlikely.

If a 3rd is what we likely get for Vanek, at best. I would prefer Ritchie, he is in the NHL, small guarantee that 3rd round pick makes it. Plus Ritchie has the size and type of game we lack in our bottom 6. I think he could do well here, we lack what he brings

Edler
Loui
Sedins
and either Gudbranson or Hutton

should not be on this team next year.

If you have to bring in another veteran "stop gap" player to help out with all the youth which would obviously be on the team next year then so be it, but it's time to clean this up and move on.
Re: Vanek, if all you can get for him is a 3rd round pick, you keep him. There is too much going on with him and Boeser to move him for that little.

Even with upping some contracts next year, with Edler, Sedins, and Loui off the books. (for example) That's $25 Million
Throw $8-10M (or?) plus term at Taveres and you've got a franchise center who'll allow Horvat to become our next Kesler at #2C
Re-sign Vanek for 1 or 2 years (and let him know this is all *figuratively going to happen to entice him into making a sweetheart deal)

Vanek      /    Tavares    /    Boeser
Baertshi  /     Horvat      /   Virtanen/Granlund
Boucher  /  Pettersson  /   Goldobin
Gaunce   /     Sutter        /   Dowd

- You keep the chemistry between Vanek and Boeser going, adding an elite legit #1C
- You allow Horvat to ease into a secondary, yet critical 2C role where he can (hopefully) grow into that scoring/shutdown center ala Kesler (Selke-style)
- You reunite Goldobin with Boucher who've had killer offensive chemistry dating back to junior where Boucher paired with Goldy, broke Stamkos' goal scoring record, adding a (possible) future elite Center.
- You keep Sutter as your key shutdown man paired with a guy like Dowd who looks to be rounding into form as the PK specialist he was tagged coming here, and Gaunce who is a big body and looks to be coming into his own as a checking menace as well.

Roll 4 lines. Mix and match to taste.

Pouliot    /    Tanev
Del Zotto /   Stecher
Holm        /   Petrovic
(trade with Florida for Gudbranson)
Hutton     /    Biega

Again, mix and match, but this group has a RH shot on the right side and a LH shot on the left side, from top to bottom.

This team won't win a Stanley Cup next year but you've removed the last of the stale core (not including Tanev as he'd only played about 50 games by 2011),
you've brought in another blue chip prospect who by all means looks like he'll be ready next year in Petterson and sliding him in between two guys who can really shoot the puck, you've added a legit #1C, you've kept Vanek and his chemistry with Boeser  - which takes the pressure off Horvat of becoming our saviour, slotting him into 2C, and you've dumped Guddy for a guy who's slightly younger, about the same size but with more offensive upside. (Tallon loves Guddy and Petrovic is rumored to be on his way out)
Also, you've brought up Holm who has excellent lateral mobility and makes an excellent break out pass - he also leads Utica in scoring for defencemen.

It's called a rebuild, lets get on with it!

Well thought out, and excellent post.  Wouldn’t it be nice if JB and (or) TL read your thoughts?

Yeah I’d rather just a straight pick. What you see now with Brett Ritchie is what you’re gonna get a hard hitting 4th liner who chips in not so often on the score sheet. With Bennings drafting I’d rather take the 2nd or 3rd rounder pick and hope it turns out to be a better player than Ritchie caliber.

Ritchie had 16 goals in the NHL last year, which was his first full year in the league. A hard hitting tough to play against bottom 6 winger is what we could use. This isnt a flashy trade but it fills a void on our team in my opinion

I like him better then a lot of the bottom 6 guys on our own team but we have so many bottom 6 guys and not enough top 6 guys as it is. I’d rather play the lottery and get another ticket.

He had 10 pts in 17 playoff games in Montreal that year - I don't really call that a no-show when you factor in how much more difficult it is to score in the playoffs vs. regular season.  If Mtl. didn't get what they expected from Vanek in the playoffs I think the issue lies with their expectations as he pretty much delivered what he did in the past as far as his limited playoff experience goes.  Best case scenario at this stage of his career imo is that he's going to chip-in offensively at a high 3rd liner and/or average 2nd liner is going to and he's not going to be your go-to shut down winger, far from it - if you're expecting more out of him as an NHL GM then that's on you, because you didn't do your homework on him as a player.  As for overall effort, criticism is probably fair, but one guy shouldn't be holding your playoff fortunes in his hands anyway - especially if it's a guy like Vanek.  If Minny didn't like what he brought they should've sat him - which they didn't.  We all know scoring is at a premium around the league especially heading into the playoffs.  If Vanek keeps up his current pace I'm sure there will be tire-kickers on him and JB has to decide if the value is worth it or not?

These GMs are still the ones that will decide what they are willing to pay to bring him in.  It doesn't matter whether they are justified or not - that's how he is perceived and that sets his value.

People need to stop looking back at what he got last year and say that’s Vaneks predetermined value. Maybe Holland lost that trade. Benning seemed to find better value in Burrows then Holland did for Vanek. Holland has been making suspect moves in my opinion his last couple first round draft picks have been reaches.
