(Discussion) Value of Dante Fabbro

Recommended Posts

I’ve been a big fan of Fabbro since he was on Pentiction. He had a pretty good World Juniors also considering he was injured before. He’s also a local kid.

Considering the log jam on defensemen in Nashville I don’t think Fabbro will be getting a shot there. Also Nashville has a great shot at winning the cup this year and Fabbro could be used as a chip to bring in more pieces to put them over the top.

what would it take for Vancouver to land this kid?

I think Vanek could interest them. He’s having a pretty good offensive season for us and is a PP specialist. Obviously we would have to add more but I think Vanek could be a starting piece.

what do you fine people think?

Poile disagrees that they have a log jam.  Before that 2016 draft he was concerned by their lack of D in their prospect pool.  Predators draft BPA but they were hoping to draft a D in the 1st and 2nd round that year to re-stock their cupboards.  He did several interviews on that as well as their head of amateur scout who talked about how they hadn't focused enough on Ds lately.  Ellis is a UFA in one season and Josi in two seasons - they've moved Girard.  Fabbro is now even more important to them.

This was one of Poile's quotes in the Tennessean ahead of the draft:  "I'm not saying we're drafting a defenseman, but don't be surprised if we did draft a defenseman because you have to start planning for the future. If you're drafting an 18-year-old and you're looking four years down the road and you add four years onto the age of our defense, it could be time to develop another highly rated defenseman."

T. Vanek and ? for D. Fabbro? Not sure who we'd add to that. Sautner?

He's from New West, wonder if he knows Virtanen well?

Poile did his mea culpa of failed TDL trades a couple of years ago.  He talked about how he gave up too much and that it mostly messed up chemistry.  They've only added for depth since - Parrenteau and Fiddler last year and both didn't play every game.  They preferred going with their prospects in Milwaukee re injuries to Fiala/Johansen.  He also already said that his deadline trade this year will be to try and add Eeli Tolvanen as soon as his season with Jokerit is over.

Very interesting. I did not realize that was Polies game plan.

However if we were to give them something to win now and additionally something for the future but not quite as good as Fabbro, would they bite? I think they might. Winning the cup beats building for the future.

Honestly I'd say Beartschi and a 4th could do it.  Maybe Vanek and a decent defensive prospect going back

Regardless of what Poille says he has to see his window is over the next 3 years with the current forward core being locked up until 2020-2021 and his ridiculous blue line being locked up to the same with only Emelin a UFA before 2020.  In 4 years the average age of that defense will be 30 years 7 months, his forwards will have an average age of 31 years 2 months

Then with Lyytinen, Dougerty and Allard doing decently well Fabbro is a very attractive trade piece for a team that is just fractionally above middle of the pack for scoring in playoff bound teams.

Fabbro would be an attractive trade piece that could/would command a top 6 winger possibly, if nothing else it cannot hurt to ask.  A GM that knows his window is open will make interesting moves and with a 3-4 year window to contention and an uncanny ability to find defensive studs in every round while maintaining a ridiculous workable internal cap why not

This is a very important quote by Poile, who has to be considered one of the premium defensemen drafting GM's...............he says 4 years to develop a Dman.......

Get on it JIm!
