This went down last week apparently but I didn't see it posted here.

Botchford apparently confirmed there was something to it (take that how you will) .

If true, I'd do that in a second.  Liljegren has a good chance of being a #1 defenseman and that's the one position in our prospect pool where we are badly lacking.  I love Tanev and our defense would be noticeably worse without him, but he's not getting any younger, is starting to get into injury trouble, and we need to plan for 2-3 years down the road and not be as concerned with today.

Plus a late first?  Heck yeah. If this rumor has any teeth, I'd be all over it.

This same deal was rumoured months ago. When asked about it as a possibility, Bob McKenzie said Vancouver would need much more.

Tanev is a very solid #2/3 D-man, who is still relatively young, and signed for cheap for 2.5 more years. That's absolute gold. And he's the exact type of player (RHD defensive specialist) Toronto is looking for. Not only that, but that have verifiable proof that he'd pair well with their #1 LHD, Morgan Reilly, as they played very well together in the Worlds a couple of years back.

So yeah, especially considering Vancouver holds all the cards here, I hope they get more from Toronto than two maybes like a late 1st and a recent mid-round first. I'd expect there to be at least one more solid pick/prospect added.

I love when guys have value, then we hold onto them to get the max value, but then we don't trade them, and then trade them when they have low value.

Tanev will be traded in 2 years for a 2nd.

Exactly. A bird in the hand......

If the deal includes keeping Benning, I'm all for it. Tanev will be too old when this team is ready for the Cup. For let it be known that losing Taven would be the equivalent of a black hole to this franchise. However, for an undrafted player, getting two 1sts (18 yr old Liljegren was 17OA '17) in a rebuilding phase is highly likely best option. Again, thank to Benning's savoir faire concerning the draft, losing Tanev is lessened by a 1st round draft choice, which we know has a higher chance of turning out than not.

It also likely puts Toronto in a much better position for the playoffs. It would be an actual homecoming for Tanev who was born in Toronto.

I think Liljegren could be a good player, but definitely not a #1 guy (or shouldn't be on a good team). Liljegren will probably be what we are hoping Hutton and Pouliot will become. I think he will be an excellent 2nd pairing dman. With that said, if this was the deal offered, then yes I would be happy to take it. Love Tanev and he makes the defence much better when he's in the lineup, but the question is how often will he be in the lineup. That late 1st is hopefully what should put us over the top in this deal if we nab another dman or someone like Dominik Bokk.

Would be nice to squeeze a little more like say a conditional 4th that becomes a 3rd if they make it past the 2nd round of the playoffs.

Am I going to get a virus if I click that link? :P

That would be a very nice return for us.

How can you say that so definitively?  He's very skilled, and fast too. He hasn't put up amazing numbers but I feel he just needs time and seasoning; heck, he's still only 18.

But as you say - even if he was a solid 2nd pairing guy that plus a first is not a bad return.  The issue with our defense right now is that we have a bunch of decent 3rd pairing guys.  Stecher, Del Zotto, Pouliot, and to a lesser degree Biega and Hutton.  Some with a bit of potential and all with some skill but none likely ever to deserve a strong 2nd pairing role with the exception of Juolevi.  Other than that, we're pretty thin; Benning has to fix this asap.
