Yeah, probably see a repeat of Boeser and Gaudette next Spring, depending how his team does.  He's in a good program and should really dominate this year, and has lots of opportunity now to clean up what he needs to in his game to prepare for the pros (now with some direction from a pro team), and of course continue to work on the proverbial strength and fitness.  Gives us the opportunity to work in others like Sautner, McEneny, and hopefully Juolevi through out the year, see if Hutton and Pouliot continue to stagnate or develop and improve, then decide which assets to move out.

Hopefully he pulls a Werenski and finishes out the year with Utica on a playoff run then joins the Canucks the following season.

And apparently Linden was most vocal about NOT having Hughes in Vancouver.  Again, the difference is that the owners and management want to push forward and accelerate the rebuild, especially by bringing in the young players, whereas Linden appears to be the one holding the e-brake, keeping the likes of Edler around and even extending him.  If he didn't agree with the signings, then who was going to play in those roles?  He said the team would be very young, but if he thought he could just throw unproven kids into all four lines then maybe it's a good thing he's not making or overseeing hockey decisions anymore.

Or maybe Trevor actually knows from first hand the kind of pressure it could have on an 18 year old rookie, where a market has high expectations and is trying to protect a kid from being rushed into a situation that he isn't ready for.

I'm happy with the decision. So rare for a 18-19 year old defenseman to jump in right after the draft. Quinn probably would've been sheltered had he played, I doubt the logjam was a concern.

I was concerned with Linden leaving that the chances of him turning pro right away would be higher. But this is good news. I'm sure he could have played a sheltered role but I rather him come in when he's ready to make an impact and be one of the better players. The extra time to work on his game should be helpful.

He's not far off, I'm sure he'll be one of our better defensemen when he makes the team next season.

This way the canucks will better evaluate their d men who are almost their, Sautner, Brisbois, and Pouliot and see if Hutton is going to turn it around

Hughes gets heavier, wiser and makes the team when they have less question marks and hopefully less need for him and he will be able to play his game without the stress of being relied on too much

I'm surprised it has taken this long for Quinn to decide. My guess is the Canucks are still indecisive about assuring him a spot!!

Now, Hutton and Pouliot can battle out for ice time.

Yep been saying he had no clear path to play on the team, this does not surprise me at all. Juolevi could challenge for a spot also, but my guess is he starts in Utica. Defence primed to make no changes from one of the worst in the league last year. Hoping Juolevi makes the team, but not at all confident it will happen no matter how well he plays. We will waste the first 20-25 games waiting for injury to get him in is my guess.

Hughes going to college is probably best, at least better than Utica. No way Hughes takes this long to make a decision if he thinks he has a realistic chance of making the Canucks. Don’t need assurances necessarily, just a shot, and I don’t think he saw one in either the message he was getting from management or roster.

This was the right decision. I look forward to hearing about his progress and success this up coming season. The future is bright in Vancouver. Next year we should have a bunch of prospects competing for spots on the team.

Hughes

Juolevi - Might make the team this year

Selfishly, I am stoked that Hughes will be at the WJs!  We could have 3-5 prominent players in the WJs.

Best case scenario is that he gets all the points for team USA but loses all of his games in the process :)

If any other dman drafted after Hughes makes the NHL, then we will apparently have drafted the wrong dman.

This is good news IMO, Pettersson for Calder this season and Hughes for next season!

The best part is there will be staggered contracts for EP and QH's second contracts ...which will both likely be for $8-10M/year  for 8 years....

I don't think either one will need a bridge contract to prove anything...it should allow us to sign BB for the same money and BH for about the same, but in 4 years time.

Joulevi's path to the NHL should be shorter as well...definitely by the TDL.

Probably the safest decision, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't excited about potentially seeing him playing with the big bois. Let him stew and grow a year longer, and give Juolevi his chance this year. Probably would have gotten tricky with two rookie dmen going for spots on the team anyways. It just easier this way and besides, there's no rush at this point in the franchise. Offsetting our rookie dmen's starts and letting Hughes mature is better than our expedient, drooling desires to watch a top prospect in the NHL. Nonetheless, this year and next year will still be exciting on the rookie front.

Hughes can use the year to hit the gym and assert himself on the ice in a top role.  Stoked he's not been rushed and sticking to developing the right way.  Next year he might have grown another inch and added ten that pounds of muscles to his frame, and he can work on his shot to bring it up to an elite level like Ellis did.  I'd bet we will see a more rounded and physically better player when he makes his debut, and it gives OJ a chance to get his feet wet which is ideal.
