Yes, if he makes a choice in summer, he plays in October 2019, as thats when the season starts :)

Why would he do that, when it would cost him a full year of his ELC?  The top college players, which Quinn is the top of the top, will burn the year off the ELC.

I think it is always a gamble, but basically you want your first round picks happy...……….

so like Boeser, he is in his in his last year of his ELC now, because he signed the contract early......those 9 games he played are costing the Canucks 6.5 M, 1 year early...…..it is the risk, but a player only basically gets what he deserves, so if Hughes signs early and plays like $&!# for the 9 games, and then the next 2 years, he would only be offered the appropriate contract, but still he gets it one year early, because he plays that 9 games. Same for Gaudette.

Sure. I would agree normally. But with expansion draft looming and these 9 games making a big difference, i think on this case, i'd say play him next year and if playing 9-10 less games in your entire career is a big deal to the player, its indicative of 'Tryamkin-like' entitlement issues and trade him for someone with similar skill sets. Got no time for divas, not unless you can bring a Gretsky-Orr-Hasek like clear-cut #1 in the league performance on the table.

Having Pettersson might lure a college kid like Fox.  Fox might realize he would get a lot more points here, playing with Petey, than elsewhere, and (therefore) get a much bigger dollar amount out of his ELC.  Points = dollars.

We should have a "Fingers Crossed" "Like" emoji

He may not. but its not up to him, its up to the club. And clearly, the club's best interests are to have him wait till next season. And anyone who is going to argue that the extra 9-15 games are going to be a huge part of a defenseman's development, is engaging in sophistry, not cogent defense.

Well, that is the risk, isn't it? There are other ways to protect that 4th DMan……..as in picks, if you are really afraid of loosing someone.....I don't know, that why Benning gets paid the big bucks!

I don't know what sophistry and cogent mean.  :picard:  I was a farm-boy hockey player.  Sorry, but we beat up on guys who used words we didn't understand. :P

Calgary traded his rights maybe for a reason tho, if they knew he was going free agent and wanted to stay in NY for his career then maybe thats why. Just speculating, I have no idea.

well i grew up as the 'really good looking smart guy who can talk a lot' so farm boys who tried to beat me up mostly succeeded...but my payback was rolling in the hay they'd just collected with their sisters :P

Yeah, but Alf has really ugly, hairy sisters...…...not a win in my books!

If you look real close you can see Canuckistani hiding in the bookshelf. LOL

Well that just means i had to raid the farmboys' stock of moonshine before rolling in the hay with their sisters. There aint no face that moonshine can't make look like Yasmine Bleeth for a teenager :)

Quinn Hughes on Sportsnet 650:

On World Juniors: “I'm not too worried about anything other than USA hockey and winning a medal. It is nice that the tournament is in Vancouver, but I am going to do one job and that's win.”

On USA rivalry: "Obviously it's one of the best rivalries in sports, I am really excited about it. It's very heated and with it being in Canada this year, the rivalry will even be better this year."

On the Canucks: “With all the young talent, it is a very exciting time for the organization and also for me. The plan right now is to definitely to sign, I am really confident in my abilities. I think after this year I will be ready, my main goal is to play in the NHL ASAP.”

On his season: "I am getting stronger, that's why I came back. From game one to game 17, I have gotten better in all aspects and my game is growing. I feel real comfortable with where my game is right now."

On wanting to be faster: "I think you can always work on it, Connor McDavid said he is always trying to improve his skating and I agree with that."

Good point about the expansion draft scenario.

There's a lot of variables to consider with Hughes and the Seattle thing just makes things more clouded.

Would asking him to wait to turn pro give him cause to just stay in Michigan and wait out his UFA status?  Hopefully by drafting a player of 'high moral character' you assume he would never do that.

By all accounts, he's NHL ready or will be very, very close to that by the time his season ends in Michigan this year.  Look at a somewhat comparable player in Charlie McAvoy in Boston.  Hughes is, by all accounts, ahead of his development at the same age and McAvoy had no issues transitioning to the NHL (I know, physically McAvoy is ahead of Huges, but people thought Petey was physically underdeveloped as well.....)

Likely scenario is that Hughes gets an automatic invitation to the Worlds at the end of his Michigan season and then proves to everyone he belongs in the NHL immediately.

The club would asking Hughes to give up millions... not a great way to start off bargaining with a top flight NCAA prospect whom we need and every body else wants.

Sounds like his decision to go back to college for one more year was the right thing to do. He sounds like he has improved in many areas and is 100% ready to go!

Really excited and looking forward to watching him in the World Juniors.

He's excited and  looking forward to make beautiful passes to Petey Bo and Brock.
