2018-19 Utica Comets Thread

Recommended Posts

Wow. I said bring him up for a look see not for the season . Give him a taste them send him back  down knowing what he needs to work on . The same with any gifted offensive player . We have a ton of muckers AHL is a lot rougher then the NHL . The NHL is about speed position and compete.

that makes sense given he bolted the first time he was sent there. i am sure it burns his britches that his friend pettersson is thriving in the nhl.  but you would also assume the guy is getting excellent advice from his family on what the ahl is for and how best to get out of there.  from that i deduce that he either isn't listening or else is finding he is not ready.  either way suggests he has to stay there, and not be promoted until he gets into a groove.

You see a guy that bolted ? I see a loyal player that wanted to help his team move up to the SHL. A team player....that's a good thing.

More 'put down' language with him fuming ( those burning britches ! ) about not being with Pettersson. Total assumption. Totally negative assumption.

Spending another year in Sweden allowed him to be both a great teammate and add a year of weight/ muscle. A good idea.

Leadership is being provided by 2 veterans, neither of them Canucks property:

Carter Bancks, 29 yrs old (third year as Captain) - see:  http://www.uticacomets.com/players/detail/bancks

and

Jamie Sifers (36 in January) - Calder Cup winner 3 years ago.  See: http://www.uticacomets.com/players/detail/sifers

Problem isn't coaching, or leadership, or lack of commitment by the players - it's the same as with the big club. Injuries, and the call-up domino effect of Canucks' injuries.  Lose your entire 1st line (Gaudette between Archibald and Boucher), your top 2 goalies, and key defensemen for 2 or 3 games at a time, and it becomes hard to score and to defend.

By far the worst goals differential in the entire league (where they rank 29 out of 31 teams - 30th if using winning %) with 49 goals for and 69 against.

Send Gaudette, Archibald and Gaunce back down, and with Boucher's return, things would turn around quickly.

Lets not forget that Cull was offered the job after the Canucks were turned down by Rocky Thompson, Bob Woods and Norm Bazin. Coaching the Canucks AHL team wasn't on the top of the list of any experienced head coaches so they ended plucking an assistant coach from nearby Syracuse.

Well I would have at least tried to offer it to WD who had an amazing record with youth - even in Van despite what some idiots say. He probably turns it down but if he hadn't, what a capture he would have been for Utica.

Cull hasn't shown he can make goat's turd soup out of goat's turds so far. To start blaming virtually the whole team for lack of effort doesn't say much for his standard of culinary skills.

"Leadership is being provided by 2 veterans, neither of them Canucks property:"  They are all Canucks property just some our on NHL contracts and others are on AHL contracts.

It's always easy to sit back and blame things on injuries and call ups and then wring your hands from it.  But it doesn't change the fact that they went into the season without enough quality centers knowing that Gaudette would be the first player called up.  And now they sit back and watch the Comets sink to the very bottom of the league while doing nothing about it.  There is always some that can be done if you make it a priority.

During the Comets first season in 2013 the previous Canucks management underestimated the roster needs for a competitive AHL team (the Chicago Wolves had previously supplemented the roster with their own players) and the Comets began the season by losing their first 9 games.  But they didn't just sit back and watch the Comets stay in the basement they brought in Cal O'Reilly from Europe and Kent Huskins who hadn't been offered a NHL contract by anyone.  Both of these guys signed AHL contracts and the addition of a true #1 center and veteran defenseman completely turned the Comets season around.  They had one of the better records in the league the second half of the season and just missed making the playoffs as they couldn't dig all the way out of that early season hole.

Just this season the Dallas Stars had multiple injuries on defense which had decimated the back end of their AHL team and just recently did something about it rather than keep going to the ECHL PTO well.  They made a trade with Buffalo for Taylor Fedun and immediately sent him to the AHL Stars.  Now Buffalo's AHL farm team in Rochester had more AHL quality defenseman than they could play every night so they were willing to let Fedun go.  The price that Dallas paid to help their farm team was essentially nothing....a conditional 7th round draft choice.  The conditions are if Fedun plays in 25 NHL games they get a 7th round pick.  If Fedun doesn't play in 25 NHL games (which he won't) Buffalo doesn't get anything in return other than gifting Dallas a contract of a player that they didn't have room for either in Buffalo or on the farm.  It is another example of a NHL team doing something to help their farm team and the prospects playing on it when there are a lot of injuries and not just ignoring the situation.

UTICA COMETS & AUD AUTHORITY TO UNVEIL LIFE-SIZE BRONZE CLINTON COMET STATUE

Nov 19, 2018

Utica Comets President Robert Esche announced today that on Saturday, November 24, the Utica Comets will unveil a bronze, life-size statue of the four Clinton Comets – Dave Armstrong, Jack Kane, Pierre Prevost, and Borden Smith – who have remained in the area since their playing days and have served as unwavering ambassadors of the area’s Comet Culture. The statue also features a plaque in remembrance of Ian Anderson, the fifth in the group, who passed away in November of 2013.

For years, the Comets, along with the Upper Mohawk Valley Memorial Auditorium Authority, have searched for a way to honor and memorialize the five pillars responsible for growing the grassroots of hockey in the Mohawk Valley. Once they came up with the idea of a bronze statue, they commissioned Art of Bronze, based out of Los Angeles, California, to take on the project, which took over five months to complete; the piece weighs over 900 pounds and represents the figures in true life-size form. The process began earlier this summer with a 360-degree photoshoot at the Adirondack Bank Center, which was then translated into a sculpture that was made by an artist in Los Angeles; the piece was then sent across the Pacific to Thailand for the actual molding process. Finally, the bronze statue traveled back to Los Angeles, where Art of Bronze put the finishing touches on the piece, affixed plaques, and sent the statue across the continent to Utica.

The permanent fixture in the plaza outside of the Adirondack Bank Center will preserve the lives and legacies of the five men who are accredited with galvanizing the Comets brand, growing it throughout the Mohawk Valley, and establishing the entire region as a hockey hotbed. Their unwavering devotion and infectious personas made them natural ambassadors of the sport and of our Comet culture. The 1967-68 Clinton Comets are known throughout the hockey community for completing their season with a 57-5-10 record – a feat that still stands today as the best single season record in professional hockey.

“The Clinton Comets truly represent what the makeup of a hockey player, both on and off the ice, should be,” said Robert Esche, continuing, “and they are the reason that the sport of hockey has such a good name. Personally, I have been molded by these guys since I was a little kid, and it means the world to be able to create something so special for them that will live at the Adirondack Bank Center forever.”

“The AUD Authority is proud and honored to play a part in honoring the lives and legacies of these five Clinton Comets,” said Carl Annese. “The statue will be the idyllic representation of what they have given back to both our hockey community and the entirety of the Mohawk Valley.”

The statue will be unveiled in a ceremony at 4pm out on the plaza of the Adirondack Bank Center that fans are encouraged to attend. Immediately following the ceremony, the Comets will hold their annual tree lighting, complete with Santa Claus, out on the plaza. The team store will also sell a small number of limited-edition mini replica statues, beginning during Saturday’s game.

^^Lol, on first scan, I thought it said they were unveiling a life sized, bronze, Hillary Clinton statue!

Clinton Comets makes so much more sense. :)

Honouring those former players, and current team cultural ambassadors, is a classy move. Good on Utica to celebrate their past, as well as the present and future, especially when it comes to those former players that remain a fixture in their community.

almost every post from you is negative toward the Canucks, it's almost like you don't get the Comets are a farm team.

Yes a poorly managed farm team.

Are there specific points that I made that you dispute or just don't like negative comments about the Canucks management?

I'm glad others are as annoyed as I am. Nothing but crying comes from the Utica guys anymore.

Canucks have been in the basement for a while now and there wasn't this much complaining.

Regarding Comets coaching. I would have given the job to Baumgartner and brought in an experienced NHL assistant coach to work with Green. But I guess Green asked or wanted to select him assistants.

I think AHL assistant to NHL assistant is a big jump. Should have let Baumer marinate in the A for a couple years as the head coach like we did with Green.

Its kind of depressing to read this thread this year. Obviously the team overall isnt doing well. Could we not try to bring over some Euro players vs signing ECHL guys? I know they might be under contract but a more skilled player might take the opportunity to come to NA and the buyout of the players current deal cant be that expensive

Cull is taking some hits on this thread and by a small minority of fans in Utca. But don't forget that he coached a team last season filled with ECHL plugs on PTOs to a 16 game streak with no regulation losses. They took 29 of a possible 32 points during that streak which pretty much secured a playoff spot. But unfortunately the roster that he has to work with this year is even weaker.

Ya its unfortunate we cant find some better players to help out the farm team. We have some young AHL rookies down their but they cant be expected to light it up instantly like some think they should.

We need some AHL vets to help. Or look at Euro options vs ECHL fill ins?

Where ever you can find them at this point.

It could be Euro with a North American player that finds himself wishing that he was closer to home like they did with Cal O'Reilly in 2013.

It could be a free agent that hasn't signed yet and would be willing to sign an AHL contract at this point like Kent Huskins in 2013. Freddie Hamilton is a name that was mentioned on HF Boards.

It could be a proven AHL playmaker center like TJ Hensick that didn't get a contract offer this year and is in the ECHL.

It doesn't have to be any of those specific players but Ryan Johnson should be looking for a creative way of helping fix an obvious roster issue on the team that he is the GM of.
